As I predicted many times on here. A 200 seat majority with only ,33%. Is an outrage.

did you complain in 2019, 2017, 2015?
Have you campaigned against FPTP?
I don't think it is the best system but a bit late to complain now.

A Starmer government probably the best for the majority of people in the uk.
However with a 1/3 of a 3/5 turnout means that of those eligible 1/5 voted lab, so 4/5 were not convinced.
Fingers crossed for the next few years but you can’t keep all of the people all of the time.
As I think it’s been said it was a punishment beating for the tories.

Even in Starmers own constituency his vote change down was stark.

Currently Labour have roughly as many popular votes as John Majors Govt in 1997.

Lib Dems barely 2/3rds of what Ashdown got in 97 and they will get 25 seats more.

Proportional Representation is the only fair and democratic voting system
Then you dont get the pathetic tactical voting where people vote for a party they dont actually support and then moan about the government they voted for

those numbers can't be right.

it is academic though as that is the system. If you don't like it campaign against it.

FPTP is serving us well. Can you imagine after 14 years of disastrous incompetence we had to see Little Rich ie and Lying Farage meeting to thrash out Cabinet appointments.

PR might be a disaster for the country
By:

When: 05 Jul 24 11:17
PR would take time to establish. Unfortunately we have combat politics where it is all about winning
and actually doing the best thing for the country is an afterthought. I believe there was a time when
ruling parties had cabinet members from other parties based on their expertise. Imagine that?
By:

Just look at the share of the vote. Little Rich ie and Farage could be trying to form a Government now!
By:

When: 05 Jul 24 11:21
you mean having a massive majority government with a minority of the vote so not representing the british electorate

So you are putting up FPTP as a success based on the wonderful government we've had over the last few years

Utter rubbish its down to the majority party to form the government i.e Labour
By:

When: 05 Jul 24 11:29
No it’s not!

The King decides firstly who he thinks can form a Government.

You are the one who does not know what he is talking about. Under a PR system Starmer would have less that 40%of the vote that is less than the Conservatives and Reform.
By:
rothko
When: 05 Jul 24 11:32
so the King would pick minority parties to form a minority government - honestly!!

Under PR Labour would form a coalition with the Lib Dems and Jeremy Corbyn.
By:
edy
When: 05 Jul 24 11:34
In a usual PR system, the party with the most votes is tasked first with finding a majority in the new parliament. So Labour would be tasked with forming a coalition with whoever they can envision governing with. If they failed at that, then the next best party would get the opportunity to show that they are able to form a majority.
By:

When: 05 Jul 24 11:35
You don’t have a clue do you?

In 2010 Gordon Brown could also have put together a coalition Government. If he had tgd support of the Liberals the Queen might have asked him to try and form a Government. How do you think Cameron could have governed without the Liberals?
By:
rothko
When: 05 Jul 24 11:37
thats right the majority government gets the first chance - the king doesnt decide
Brown didnt want to govern in 2010 Starmer does

Minority governments are principally possible in PR systems. Not entirely uncommon in some European countries, e.g. Sweden.

You don’t know your history or system of Government

You are making it up as you go on. Keep talking and let everyone know

Personally I think the d’honte method is the fairest.
It was used successfully in the EU elections in 2010s.
The negative is it could mean an election every other year as coalition governments can implode very quickly
like in Italy.

Do yoh gave any Deutschmarks on Germany tonight? Could be a cracker with the Germans winning in penalties? I think Spain are strong but we never right off the Germans in this country!

How would 38% of the vote have given those two parties a majority in parliament?

They are Edy - minority governments will put forward a programme and then negotiate with other parties to get legislation through

I suppose one of the accusations against PR is there is a lot of dealing done behind closed doors
By:

When: 05 Jul 24 11:43
PR requires consensus politics, yeah.
By:
edy
When: 05 Jul 24 11:43
Usually. Of course it is still possible in a PR system for a party to have an absolute majority.
By:
Whisperingdeath
When: 05 Jul 24 11:44
Edy technically they could do deals with the Libtards

There are many ambitious men who want some of the action in the gravy train. These people will sell their souls. Look at Netanyahu and his extremist coalition and what the people of Israel want. Netanyahu is prolonging the war to keep out of jail!

Yes, they could do deals with the LibDems, but that's not a given. Someone would have to show they can command a majority before forming the government. I agree with Dotchinite that this would this year likelier have been Labour + LibDems for a minority government (unless your hypothetical PR system had a % hurdle, with which Labour+LibDemsn might have had a majority together) than a Tories+Reform+LibDems government.

Though at the end it is all highly speculative as the votes shares would have looked different in a PR system.

The king takes his lead from Parliament.

Sunak has resigned, he was pm.

He could have battled on but Starmer would have called
a vote of no confidence and ousted him.

If we had pr then again it would be same after
an election.

The old pm would stay in office until a new
government emerged that could demonstrate it had
50% +1 vote in Parliament.

If that couldn't happen because of differences then
the old pm would get first crack at forming minority
government, if he doesn't fancy it then he resigns
and leader of 2nd party gets a crack.

If nobody fancies it then a new election is called

The king has feck all to do with it.

Parliament is boss in uk, Charlie has a rubber stamp.
