And amazingly an increase from 12% to 13% has won the Libdems 60 more seats!!! The number of votes for Labour is only up very slightly, Tory is massively down but the Voters who support none of the three main English parties is the highest in history. That in my view after 60 years of watching elections is due mainly to the choice of candidates, very few of whom have ever done a proper job.

As the Sky news reporter called it, a Loveless landslide, an Anti Tory vote rather than a Pro Labour vote, no where near the vote share of Blair in 97 or even Corbyn in 17, 2nd or 3rd lowest turnout in over 100 years.

Just landslide ennui.

Everyone has known for months that Labour would win easily. They made sure they got the vote out where it mattered to get the seats they needed, but in safe constituencies - such as mine and pretty much most in the wider Liverpool area - you'd barely have known there was an election on. No leaflets, zero knocks on the door, hardly any posters. Labour didn't care about turnout, they cared about seats. And traditional Labour voters in red seats didn't really care and thought (rightly) that they'd win easily without them.

They thought, what do we need another front bencher for, and what we really need is Jeremy Corbyn causing trouble.
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 5, 2024 8:53 AM BST

We were literally discusssing last week the chance of upsets because Labour voters would be unbothered to turn up because they think it's all over. Now it happens and you're trying to run a new narrative.

Report PorcupineorPineapple July 5, 2024 9:01 AM BST

What was it, an accident?
Report Cider July 5, 2024 9:08 AM BST
34% is embarrassing for such a landslide. and yes I know it's the system but a third of the vote is hardly a powerful mandate. I recall people moaning about Johnson not getting past 50%
Report Dotchinite July 5, 2024 9:12 AM BST
Whatever the reason its still a bizarre result to get a third of the votes and majority of 170. If Reform hadnt been there then there wouldnt have been a majority.  This is just anti Tory election not pro labour. Where we go next I have no idea but more than 1 term for Starmer is hardly certain.

Just the rules of the game. Biggest winners are the Lib Dems. Davey has been portrayed as a clown throughout but maybe he's the actually the best political operator of them all?

The Tories in my area seemed to be deliberately losing a "safe" seat. The sitting MP resigned 4 months ago but it took them until June to find a candidate who was a political worker in London who inevitably lost to a Libdem who had won the seat in the Coalition year. I did not see one Conservative poster in a Tory seat!!!! They didn't seem to care.

Just about everything else as expected

Can only speak personally and behalf of my brother yhtl , myself and wife went around 5pm to see the most horrendous queue and after 15 min it hardly moved due to so estimated 2 hours to get on so didn't vote , brother lives 150 miles away in Farnborough he says they went around 3.30pm to witness a queue of around 30 people so thought give it a go , heard at least 3 people say they'd forgotten their I.D now required and said they'd not the time or inclination to come back , add that around the country to the tory voters who knew it was a waste of time together with the youngsters who don't generally seem to give a toss and 60% doesn't sound too bad really.

It's a huge drop.

I know there has been supression and id issues
but an extra 1 in 12 of population not voting is huge.

Farrage got 4,102,109* in 2024 14.3%

Farrage got 3,881,099 in 2015 12.6%

Yes it's a lot for sure and no idea how widespread these I.D issues were tbh , using my brothers example though of 30 in a queue and 3 ( couples ) forgetting I.D and not returning is equivalent to 1 in 5 but tbh that's a flimsy explanation to generalize with so we'll see if any of the polls come up with something more accurate.

Hierarchy of You Gov was live on Sky yesterday explaining why his company predicted that Labour would end up with 412 seats.

How many are on holiday? That is why they normally have the Elections in the autumn. Yet another really daft call by Sunak. I don't see it being just down to ID. Most adults have either a Driving License or some form of work ID with their picture on. I bet it didn't deter those who vote 10 times in every election and lock their family at their home.

How many are on holiday? That is why they normally have the Elections in the autumn.

Whilst this is a valid point, don't think it's that important, it's more of a generational thing than a seasonal thing, over the last 100 years between the 1920's right up until 1997, turn out was always between 71-84%, then there was a massive drop off in 2001 to 59% and it's never really recovered, the next 6 general elections after that had voter turnout between 61-69%, no where near the heights of the 80%'s in the early 1950's.

You could make the link between mass immigration under Blair having an lasting effect or the decision to go to war in Iraq and Afghanastan which had over a million people protesting against, but I don't know if that's fair, could just be people becoming more and more disillusioned with politics, it is noteworthy however as the country's population has increased over the last 30 years, the voter turnout has decreased, make of that what you will.

Kind Regards.

Sharp fall in turnout across much of Merseyside
published at 01:58
01:58
Turnout will be a concern for the incoming government, and across Merseyside the number of eligible voters making the trip to their respective polling stations is significantly down compared to election day in 2019.

In St Helens South and Whiston turnout was 53.3%, down from 63.6% when Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn went head to head.

In Liverpool Riverside, predicted to be among the safest Labour seats in the country, turnout was 45.6%, down from 66% in 2019.

Liverpool Walton tells a similar story, with 53.4% down from 65.4%, while Liverpool Wavertree has seen turnout drop to 56.7% from 68.58% in 2019.

Across the water in Wirral, Birkenhead has seen turnout fall to 55.4% from 66% in 2019, with Wirral West at 68.3% compared to 77.3% last time around.
