Have noticed a number of times now that The Daily Telegraph has become very tabloidy in its headlines and subheadlines. Bit sad for a newspaper that used to be among the grandest and most serious of them all to sully itself like that.

THe Telegraph is a joke now. Quite often the sensational headlines have no bearing on facts and are just there to get views.

The Daily Telegraph didn't actually talk to that general themselves, but The Economist did and the Telegraph then wrote about the interview in The Economist. If you actually read the article in the Telegraph, or better yet the piece in The Economist, it becomes abundantly clear that the headline is plain clickbaity BS, very much bordering on disinformation even.

He said nothing at all about an inevitable defeat. The only thing that somewhat goes into that direction is that he said Ukraine will run out of weapons before Russia in however many years with the caveat "if nothing changes". Not exactly inevitable.
There was also something else from the Telegraph where I just thought "My, that's....not a fair summary of the article."
And regarding Hitchens's message: What the general said that is there must eventually be peace talks as the war will not finish exclusively on the battlefield. That even Ukraine pushing Russia entirely out of the country would not end the war in absence of a peace treaty. He put meaningful peace talks to the second half of 2025 at an earliest instead of saying "it's time for peace talks".

The plan was to get Russia tied up fighting Ukraine, which is happening. With the West supplying the weapons while Ukraine supplied the cannon fodder.
Even if the Russians took over Ukraine, they'd have their hands full occupying it. If that happened, the west would certainly supply arms for the ''freedom fighters.'' Same as when Russia occupied Afghanistan.
The west doesn’t lose either way.
Now it's clear to everyone what they've been up to, they never intended letting Ukraine into NATO and starting WW3. Which bears out the above.
