9.35 RTE1 tonight. Previewing it on the news this morning 'stomach churning' was one description of it. Also big investigation into thousands of missing racehorses.
Thought we had been through all this after the Tiger lost its teeth ,was thousands of horses Disappeared then
In what would normally be dismissed as little more than the frenzied imagination of a cranky conspiracy theorist who thinks the government really is out to get them, the Irish department of agriculture has come up with a plan to spend €600 million over the next three years, killing 200,000 dairy cattle

I had three horses snd a couple of stables and can confirm the orish agricultural dept had not a clue. A fellahkmocked pn my door one day and asked to see them, they were licensed registered , chipped and fit. When he was out in the field he says to me "im looking for two connemara ponies apparently been left in a waterlogged field have you any idea who's they might be. ?" As I lived at the top of a hill I suggested it might be a good idea to have a look around the lake down the road, oh he said, "i just looked there". Everyone in the town knew whose ponies they were and exactly where the dodgepot of an owner kept them by the edge of the lake. This fecking goon was training for a job in t v license detection.

Not these ones Shiny, Serious animal welfare abuses and cruelty have been uncovered in the treatment of horses that are being sent for slaughter at Ireland's only licensed equine abattoir.

probably the same over here , racing industry worried about the size of the national fences , chopping orses to bits behind closed doors
greyhounds over here another one needs looking at it ,would not believe a word the GBGB is saying

Not sure of the full story here, love horses but a lot bred for racing,if they are slow/useless hard to justify 20k per annum training them, sheer numbers probably means there is little alternative.
Act on it and police it.

Any system is open to abuse but to race in the UK ,you have to put some money as a bond ,to guarantee your dog has a good retirement. I always raced black male dogs ,as they were the hardest to re home ,no matter to me ,as they always came home ,when they finished racing. Full body scans were common ,heat treatment for pulls and aches and a good diet ,all keeps them happy and ready to run fast. When they come home ,the biggest enemy is upstairs windows ,stairs and full pane doors........otherwise they are a total joy.

Fair play, horrible 'story' and rather than attack, Flat with owners and Casemoney with bookmakers putting sensible points to answer/solve what no one wants. Totally agree with you.
I wish i was a vegetarian,i have cut down and won't eat lamb, rabbit, duck ,venison, but all animals have their beauty and should any be killed? I feel a bollix sometimes having a rasher.

Hate to say this, but this is not a big revelation to people in the game here in Ireland. Been a common practice for many years, even decades. When there was several facilities who would take such horses back in recession times there was queues to get in. Each horse slaughtered was worth about 700 euro.

That's the sort of posts I like with people discussing things sensibly and accurately. Unfortunately then comes Irishone slagging off the UK. He is a disgrace to Ireland.

I had the misfortune (on many levels) to be involved in a complete slowboat here in the early 2010s. We all knew after 3 runs that the mare in question was not up to the mark. The other 2 in the syndicate suggested sending her to the abattoir but I was having none of it. Found a lady to take the mare, and happy to say it is still going strong. I say all this while coming from a farming background, so totally understand the system. But even though the mare was useless ability wise, and cost me a small fortune, I wasn't going to send it to the knackers yard.

Good man, bang in the middle of the age of austerity an all, a clear conscience which is priceless. Feel for the other 2 lads who had the disappointment and while i know it is all taking a chance the end question maybe should be answered at the start? The earlier 'solution' of a fund paid for in part by owners, bookmakers, trainers even lottery probably could be done.

Yeah, once my 2 fellow syndicate members thought about it, what use was a couple of hundred quid each in comparison to knowing that the mare would live a happy life. I, and they, have made some bad decisions in life but this was not one of them.
I'd concur with your idea of a fund. Would include a levy on each sale through the ring as well.

There are many good racing greyhound owners and obviously some slime balls ,not sure how you filter them out. On a animal welfare note ,if one slipped his collar and ran off ,the easiest way to get them back ,was go to the van that took them racing and nosily open the doors ,invariably the escapee would turn up and jump in the van ,hoping to go racing ,most loved it.

The pack instinct and sausages works wonders. When you first bring them home ,they are disorientated ,lonely and vulnerable ,in those first few hours a bit of kindness and discipline and you have a trusted friend for life. You can definitely teach an "old dog new tricks". NB a young A2 winner @ shelbourne be worth 5k+ ,so plenty in the tank for a forever home.

The weird thing is ,in England the rural people are against all this modern nonsense for sure but the same applies to Scotland ,the rural people hated the SNP and similarly in Ireland (or certainly my many Irish friends). So the old divides don't apply ,north/south (England) ,rich/poor.....all gone just urban and rural ,poles apart. Spain is too damn hot for me ,just need a Irish greyhound ,Birmingham rifle and a trout stream and I am happy...............enjoy

Interesting you saying "the rural people" They can be more survival in their way of life No doubt about that City people tend to be more escapee in their thoughts The difference is stark Anywhere in the world

I seen some of it case, pretty bad, although not a major shock, they appeared to be going after one particular horse trader, the racehorse industry wasn't complete focus so it was a bit different to the full scale attack on greyhound racing by RTE, which subsequently led to not covering derby Not good viewing, but if it improves animal welfare then fair enough.

Remember the arabs got caught drugging horses in Newmarket, one guy took the fall, Aye very good he done that himself on billion pound empire, you need serious vets, labs, biochemists to to that job. English racing turned a blind eye. "Give us a patsy and it's grand"

As i said in the UK as well, horses are slaughtered for export. Only pointing that out as there really shouldn't be any of this in these Isles.
Big protest outside Shannonside factory by the 'My Lovely Horse' crowd today.

The Spanish adore caballo (horse) in many of their tapas ,similarly French and The Belgium and much of the EU but not the UK and Ireland laps missing your logic..........is it that we should only eat things that aren't cute ,only eradicate vermin that isn't pretty ,your on dangerous "countryfile" and wokery ground my friend. Simple if we don't eat horse why slaughter it and sell it to countries that do?
If you want to call it woke fair enough, i think it is immoral.

I do not see how your differentiating ,help me out: Deer ,pigeons ,corvids ,otter, mink ,grey squirrels ,canadian signal crayfish ,ring parakeets ,all good keepers ? All bad and to be shot or trapped ? Or some good some bad. Every ones list will and should be different, can't just be your choices or the perceived cuteness factor chap. Does the landowner have a say in this or just your conscience.

It isn't illegal to eat horsemeat Ire/UK so technically you are right, horses are a bit different to others on your list, intelligent creatures.
I hope this factory is stopped from this, other countries who consume horsemeat should source it themselves and a moral stance taken instead of relatively little coin.

Ponies......ugly ,lame ,unwanted ,fail to reach breed criteria etc have been exported for slaughter since time began. Cute and tasty what a dilemma and are you sure pigs/beef/sheep aren't intelligent. No pesticides ,no herbicides ,no pest control........no food. I will keep my rifle ,you can keep that conscience and best we don't swop.

Pigs and cows are intelligent enough, i have cut down,i won't eat lamb as it is killed at the start of its life. I get the vegetarians and fair play to them. As i said early in the thread some horses have to be euthanised as not 'good enough' i see that point,to be making money and selling on to other countries to consume is a bit immoral, my opinion only.

Lambs are going for £220 for 40kg beast ,record highs in a buoyant market ,so you are in the minority but I respect your decision not to buy/consume . Places like the new forest would be overrun with diseased ,lame ,mank ,crossbred mutant ponies if they were not controlled "farmed" by people ,I am struggling to see how they should suffer from urban consciences.

Twisted ethics and morals: So we can eat pulled pork roll at Fontwell ,as although pigs are smarter than horses ,they are "not bred to race". We can eat roast beef at Chelts as cows are not as cute as race horses. All the while knowing our beloved race horses are "safe" as they are actually pets like cats and dogs.
