My concern is around how the portrayal makes children wonder.

I frankly find it also a bit weird that there is emphasis on little children watching the ESC and how horrible it will be for them. The show ran from 8 PM BST to around midnight BST last night. Maybe UK conventions are different, but which really small minor watches TV at those times unsupervised?

You guys almost won the other year because Sam Ryder won everyone's hearts. Don't be so negative from the start about the prospects to do well. 
Though just sending someone who identifies as a goat without otherwise being inspiring in any other way as a person or song-wise will likely not work. Similarly to how this year having a rather uninspiring performer and performance failed to work.

The national selection committees or competitions decide who goes. Some countries do serious competitions, like Sweden's Melfest, which is a big reason why they mostly send very solid and serious entries. It was really only the UK which send what you described. Spain maybe to an extend.
For the love of god benny, please don't search for Madonna videos from three or four decades ago. You'll have a conniption!
Maybe next year the UK, with a fresh 0 points from the public, will get the message that quality matters instead of going for the cheap, and false, conclusion that everybody is just being meanies to the UK.
