He was born Franz Reuther in 1941 in Kirn, south-western Germany, and trained as a chef while also pursuing a musical career - first as a singer and then as a producer.

He also worked with the likes of Meat Loaf and Stevie Wonder and is reported to have sold an estimated 800 million records worldwide.

Alabama has executed convicted murderer Kenneth Eugene Smith with nitrogen gas, the first time the method of capital punishment has been used globally.

A witness told the BBC that Smith thrashed violently on the gurney and the execution took around 25 minutes.Shocked

The UN condemned it on Friday as cruel but Alabama said the process had been carried out humanely.

TV presenter Jonnie Irwin, who fronted property shows Escape to the Country and A Place in the Sun, has died.

Irwin, 50, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020 after the disease had spread from his lungs to his brain.

Thomas Kingston, Lady Gabriella Kingston's husband, died from a "traumatic head wound", an inquest has heard.

A gun was found near to his body in an outbuilding at his parent's home in the Cotswolds.Shocked

Aged 45, Mr Kingston, was the son in law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. He died on 25 February.

The inquest into his death opened on Friday at Gloucestershire Coroner's Court.

His death was not being treated as suspicious, and no one else was involved.

Mr Kingston married Lady Gabriella in 2019 in a ceremony that was attended by Queen Elizabeth II.

In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace shortly after Mr Kingston's death, Lady Gabriella, 42, described her husband as an "exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him".

King Charles and Queen Camilla sent their "most heartfelt thoughts and prayers" to his family.

Was watching the Steptoe film where Harold gets married to the stripper and, as she came on stage early in the film, against/on the wall was a picture of a QPR player on one knee.  Looked like Stan but I couldn;t be sure.  Shepherd's Bush is QPR country isn;t it?

Slow left-armer Underwood took 297 wickets in 86 Tests between 1966 and 1982, the most by any England spinner.

Leighton James, the former Wales winger who played more than 600 games in the Football League, has died at the age of 71.

Capped 54 times by Wales, James played 399 games for Burnley in three spells and spent two years at Derby County.

James also represented Swansea City, Sunderland, Bury and Newport County in a 19-year playing career before turning to management with several clubs.

Burnley and Swansea said they were "saddened" at James' passing.

Clarets chairman Alan Pace said: "We are sorry to hear the news of Leighton's passing.

"He left an indelible mark on this football club and stories of his playing skills still echo around Turf Moor.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

Swansea said James was "widely-regarded as one of the Swans' finest players".

Everton have sent a "get well soon" message to their former striker Kevin Campbell who is "very unwell" in hospital.

The Merseyside club said the 54-year-old, who began his career at Arsenal, became ill last week.

"Not just a great footballer but an incredible person, Kevin is, and always has been, a fighter and we wish him and his family well at this challenging time. Sending all our love," Everton said in a statement posted on X.

Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26.

Sarkic, a Montenegro international, joined the Championship club from Wolves in August 2023 and made 33 appearances last season.

He last played for his country in a 2-0 friendly defeat by Belgium on 5 June.

The Montenegro Football Association (FSCG) said Sarkic died suddenly on Saturday morning, with local media reporting he collapsed at his apartment in Budva.
