Good to remember this when dealing with certain other forum members (not me I couldn't GAF) !
Those of their age group are disappearing and having people with the same sort of experiences to share are dying.
Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to face factors such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, locked up in a nursing home all day and hearing loss.
Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact.
Coming on this forum is therapeutic to them, they may be racist , Hitler sympathisers, they may be sexist, perverts , or even anti-woke , lets not deny them the opportunity to express their views no matter how idiotic the may be.
Free speech is a human right after all.... is it not ?
As usual, the opening topic is a generalisation. Not blaming you Irishone, we are constantly told how much people "suffer" from feeling alone and isolated and blame Covid for many ills. For me at age 76 at the start of Lockdown and 79 now it was very good for my mental health. It taught me that life can be much better when you don't have to socialise as much, don't have to buy so much stuff, drive around visiting or entertaining family and friends etc. You can just please yourself which for me (and I know I am not typical) is how I prefer to be. None of the things I enjoy most involve interacting with others except perhaps writing rubbish on here. I spend the mornings outside watching wildlife, walking and, if it is raining, reading a book and the afternoons watching sport and I don't like company for either.

Sageform, you sound like you are enjoying life so all the best to you. I personally enjoy a bit of time to myself but also some time spent with family and friends. I suppose I have the best of both worlds. It is good imo to have time to yourself alone with your thoughts. I most certainly feel refreshed after a period of isolation.

The vast majority of people would be happier if they had no friends or even relations who can be even worse Too many thorny issues and difficulties . I prefer my own company Sometimes I talk to crows , sparrows , pigeons and go for a nice walk They seem to understand my language

I have a similar lifestyle sageform as do most people of our age. Nevertheless, for the country to function, the younger generations need to go to work, to buy stuff and to socialise. Locking down the country and impeding mobility in other ways is not a good thing for anybody.

I am not criticising those who need to socialise Foinavon, although Covid, Zoom and Whatsapp seem to have replaced the workplace to a large extent. I am just questioning the notion that being alone damages everyone's mental health. I enjoy some time with family as I have 2 sons and 4 grandchildren but I don't feel any different if I have not seen them for 3 months. I suppose my brain is always occupied by the news, the Stock Market, the seasons and how they affect wildlife, and then almost any live sport if it is on TV. I can't stand soap operas or talking heads of any sort so I only switch on a minute or two before a live event is due to start. It probably all dates back to being brought up on a farm.

Yes that's true Sageform, I also think that soap operas are the pits, both mindnumbing and vehicles of propaganda. I love reading too but would not waste my remaining time on pulp fiction. It's good that you have family who visit occasionally. For me, it is enough to know that mine are well and prospering albeit far from here. As the lyrics of Billie Holliday's song say, God bless the child that's got his own.

Not sure I agree with that casemoney. I value friendships but I don't need to communicate with them every day to call them friends. I have about 5 bird watching pals who all get out as early as possible to watch wildlife before the rest of the population (and their dogs) come along making a racket and scaring everything away. We are usually in wildlife reserves but most visitors would not know a bird from a dinosaur. Traffic free place to take the dogs and kids and let them run wild. Rant over-for today.
