Motorists being passed by cyclists, E-bikes, and E scooters.

Best get an E-bike or an E-scooter if you're in a hurry and ride on the footpath. The police won't be bothered, they only get involved if someone gets hurt.
You can have a drink as well. Only trouble is leaving your wheels outside the pub. They won't be there when you come out.

Other countries have had 30 kph zones for a very long time. If Germans are able to survive the horror of 30 kph, then the tough Welsh will be able to survive slightly above 30 kph no problem.
Report PorcupineorPineapple September 18, 2023 3:10 PM BST
I was on a speed awareness course a few years ago and one thing that stuck was that you don't want to get in a bad accident in Wales. Basically so much of it is so far away from A&E or paramedic stations that you could die waiting.

Just picked up my rental car at Cardiff Airport.

Report edy September 18, 2023 3:22 PM BST
One can always argue if all of a city should be 30kph/20mph I guess, but certainly (almost) every area with pedestrians and especially children should be. The injuries for these far weaker traffic participants are simply so much lesser at 20 mph, the force put on them so much smaller, chance of survivial so much greater.

Don't you still have Hitler's autobahns, with no speed limit?

Report edy September 18, 2023 3:53 PM BST
We do, but there are no children and other pedestrians on those for the most part.

You reckon the Germans can live with 30 kph zones because they can go full throttle for 10 km at a time in between the under construction zones on autobahns to let off steam and aggression?
Report edy September 18, 2023 3:55 PM BST
Or what exactly is the relevance of autobahns here meant to be?
Report Mexico September 18, 2023 4:14 PM BST
A lot of London is 20mph including fairly major roads.

Parts of the A1 are 20mph. Plan is for more roads to go to 20. Wales is not alone in their plan.

Apparent to anyone with a functioning brain, speed limits are a trade off with productivity and safety. You could set the speed limit on motorways to 30 and have no deaths. That would be idiocy and cost billions. Meaning these days, it couldn't be ruled out.
Report Dotchinite September 18, 2023 4:38 PM BST
They have pointed out that slower speed limits wont mean longer journey times so if thats true there is no problem.
Report Cider September 18, 2023 4:42 PM BST
The speed limits are already appropriate for the roads. Road cars have got so much safer for pedestrians and cars, via enhanced technology. Why do so many politicians suddenly want to tinker with them. (that is rhetorical)
Report Dotchinite September 18, 2023 4:48 PM BST
I am going to see if what they say is true tomorrow. I will drive into town at 30 MPH and on my way home travel at 20 MPH to see if it makes any difference timewise.
Report Cider September 18, 2023 4:53 PM BST
I drove around London for many years (don't know where you are). In many parts, it wouldn't matter what the speed limit was. You're in persistent traffic. Many residential roads also had traffic calming measures. I have heard however that the A40 was moved to 30. Which is absurd.

In any case, the vast majority of people drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions. You instinctively know how fast you should be going. Having the speed limit significantly vary from the 'natural' speed will cause all sorts of problems.
Report Dr Crippen September 18, 2023 4:53 PM BST
I read somewhere that people were breaking the limits and also entering restricted zones without paying after altering their number plates.

The lowering of the speed limits could be partly to piss off the motorist, and make them dislike driving altogether.
Then it won't be so bad for those who will have to give up their cars over the rising costs.
Report SirNorbertClarke September 18, 2023 6:19 PM BST
If a road has cars parked on it then 2o is plenty.
Report Dr Crippen September 18, 2023 6:30 PM BST
Drakeford looks a right smug barstewart on that sign above where he uses a school as an example of where 20 is appropriate. No one is arguing with that.
Yet he's wheeled the 20 limit out all over the town.
Using the school as an example is dishonest if the limit applies everywhere.

We live in strange times, gentlemen.

It is claimed that reducing one’s speed will not increase the duration of one’s journey… and many folks believe it!
Report jollyswagman September 18, 2023 7:12 PM BST
if you are lucky enough to have encounter raffic sticking to 20 mph is not easy at first, you will spend a bit of time checking your speed so will have your eyes on the road for less time.

it makes sense around schools or hospitals but really is ott, multi-lane arterial roads reduced to 20 is a joke. in london a target figure of one million fines for speeding has been plucked out of thin air.

That's what Germany has basically using it for since the 80s and nobody really moans about it. Maybe the people of Hamburg and Cologne did back in the 80s, I don't know.

It's primarily a safety thing for children and other participants in a town's traffic landscape. Additionally it is used to reduce the noise created and improve the living conditions of those living directly next to some streets. In terms of living quality it also locally reduces NOx and also especially fine particular matter for the residents and those strolling around an area, but nobody cared about those things four decades ago. People tended to bath in and enjoy the fine and rich smell of pollutants.

There has been a 20% drop in claims for car accidents in Wales since the 20mph speed limit was introduced, an insurance provider has said. According to insurance company Esure they have seen a 20% drop in vehicle damage claims in Wales since the nationwide 20mph default speed limit was introduced in Wales in September 2023.

The evidence underpinning the controversial 20mph limit introduction included estimates suggesting the move could prevent up to 20,000 casualties over the next decade. Last week it was reported that the number of casualties on roads with these speed limits fell from 681 in the final quarter of 2022 to 463 in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Report SirNorbertClarke June 10, 2024 3:38 PM BST
PP I was shocked at the reduction in claims and casualties. It's going to be very hard for councils to turn down requests for 20mph zones now
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 10, 2024 3:40 PM BST
I don't think we really needed the evidence to realise that lower speeds will lead to fewer accidents. But it probably makes a lot of councils question if that extra 10mph and maybe 5 minutes saved on a journey is worth it and will look to amend too.
