Susan Hall, the Conservative candidate for London mayor, has liked tweets praising Enoch Powell, as well as some containing Islamophobic abuse towards Sadiq Khan, her Labour opponent, research by a campaign group has shown.
In February 2020, Hall liked a message on Twitter, now formally known as X, praising Powell, a former Conservative minister who became a byword for racism in UK politics after his notorious 1968 speech, which warned that immigration would lead to “rivers of blood”.
The tweet, uncovered by Hope Not Hate, depicted Powell with the words: “It’s never too late to get London back,” an apparent reference to the city’s multiculturalism.
Later in August, Hall liked a reply to a tweet asking which politician should be the honorary final member of a pack of UK prime minister-themed playing cards, which suggested it should be Powell.
Hall, a London assembly member, was the surprise choice by the Conservatives to take on Khan in next year’s mayoral election, in part due to her low profile, but also because of her hard-right views and her strong support for Donald Trump and Liz Truss.
Last month she was criticised for saying the “dangerous” Notting Hill carnival should be moved and claiming there was a “problem with crime” in the black community.
In another tweet unearthed by Hope Not Hate, Hall seemingly endorsed Trump’s baseless conspiracy theory that he lost the 2020 US presidential election because of voter fraud.

Margaret Thatcher, who was then the Shadow Cabinet's Fuel and Power Spokesman, thought that some of Powell's speech was "strong meat",[16] and said to the Conservative leader, Edward Heath when he telephoned her to inform her Powell was to be sacked: "I really thought that it was better to let things cool down for the present rather than heighten the crisis". Heath sacked Powell from his post as Shadow Defence Secretary, telling him on the telephone that Sunday evening (it was the last conversation they would have). Heath said of the speech in public that it was "racialist in tone and liable to exacerbate racial tensions"

The Times declared it "an evil speech", stating "This is the first time that a serious British politician has appealed to racial hatred in this direct way in our postwar history."[19] The Times went on to record incidents of racial attacks in the immediate aftermath of Powell's speech. One such incident, reported under the headline "Coloured family attacked", took place on 30 April 1968 in Wolverhampton itself: it involved a slashing incident with 14 white youths chanting "Powell" and "Why don't you go back to your own country?" at patrons of a West Indian christening party. One of the West Indian victims, Wade Crooks of Lower Villiers Street, was the child's grandfather. He had to have eight stitches over his left eye. He was reported as saying, "I have been here since 1955 and nothing like this has happened before. I am shattered.

try to engineer himself to be leader of the tories. It failed as heath acted, Thatcher seemed happy enough with it and became leader. Powell cleared her path |

I'd better answer the pigs. Read his entry in Wkipedia. Here's a tribute from Tony Blair. Other politicians, including his rivals, also paid tribute to him, including former Labour party leader Tony Blair who said, "However controversial his views, he was one of the great figures of 20th-century British politics, gifted with a brilliant mind. However much we disagreed with many of his views, there was no doubting the strength of his convictions or their sincerity, or his tenacity in pursuing them, regardless of his own political self-interest."[258] He was survived by his widow and two daughters.
