Are you pressing the mute button without realising?

Maybe your phone is still paired via blue tooth.

Try switching Bluetooth off and using phone.

Good answers (thanks) and I've tried both. I have turned bluetooth off and that doesn't work and I've toggled the mute, still with no joy. I've also rebooted the phone.

You can always go into phone shop that sells your phone
and one of the staff will sort it in seconds.

Does the phone have permission to use the microphone?

I'm with '3' and never entered a mobile phone shop in my life, but so far that looks my only option, cheers. Any other things I might try first?

Oh, a few weeks ago I added Ring to my phone and I pressed a microphone permission... perhaps that?

The ring sounds a possible source of problem, so does
that have an app with it you can open and then

I have used the phone since adding ring, but I haven't used it since playing with permissions. You're probably right yhtl, ring is possibly the problem. Yes nick, have turned it off and on again, but no joy.

Unless anyone else has a solution then I'll play with Ring and if that don't work I'll take it to the shop... thanks for the replies guys, it is appreciated.

I don't often update software, only an android update as I don't really use apps so don't see the point of updating them

But not always. Then the facial recognition cuts
in and I have to get him to switch it back on, lol.

I can usually sort problems on a PC, but as I said in my OP, mobiles are on another planet to me, totally clueless.

I am also almost clueless about mobiles, dear chap, but had a similar problem with my iPhone. In my case I had somehow turned a switch off on the side!

Thanks PM but I don't think that's it either. Just got off the phone to Samsung and we've done a full reset and that didn't help. Strange thing was, the mic test we done worked, but when I phone out it still doesn't. Very strange.

Sounds very much as if the mic is being
routed through something else which is
taking priority from the phone.

Nah, find the software causing the problem and delete it
or stop it taking priority from phone.

It sounds like the phone thinks a headphone is connected, even when it’s not.

No ring app remains. Just checked. I use a PC for Betfair.

Then open phone app and see that it has

But some of these downloads can be deeply embedded
and reset doesn't clear them.

No mic permissions in the phone app, but all appears ok. I don't think I've ever gone this deep into my phone before... can't hurt to learn

double-checked ring in apps... not there either so it doesn't appear to be an app issue

Thanks everyone for trying to help today. Lady on Samsung support recommended an A54 phone as it's similar. Probably due an upgrade.

There are contacts on the circuit board -
could be the mic connection .. which means opening up the phone

I thought you had it sussed there yhtl, I really did, but all the mic permissions are how they should be for the phone. I went through all 10 methods on that video but sadly, it looks like the shop or a new phone. When it comes to technology, I would most certainly trust the younger generation lfc; it's all they've ever known.

I can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to help, but I feel we might have hit a dead-end here; the phone is fooked.

Now do a proper restart on your phone

Try installing a new phone app. And obviously then make a call using the new application :)

Most of us could sort it I suspect, if it's not hardware, but tech can be incredibly frustrating, going around in circles. I just had to change over my work machine and a new mobile within the same week

Old mobile was purchased in 2015 and only having to change now because many apps were starting to say that my device will no longer be supported. Funnily enough, I changed to A54 (from s6 edge). I do like Samsung as a brand, reliable over many products for me, for decades.

I spent a week fixing home pc when Mrs downloaded

Cider might have a good work around there, but we
should still have been able to fix it.

Software yes. The new app will isolate the issue to the phone settings or the phone app software/settings.

Could it not be a problem with the headset port?

It sounds to me like the phone thinks the jack is plugged in?

That would turn the speaker off not the mic, Pm. If Aspro is thinking of spending a54 money, it might be worthwhile to look at Pixel 6a or 7a which I think are better phones with less bloat and better photography.

I think it's logically possible that the phone app could
think it's connected to a speaker that is plugged in.

It should however be logical to think we could
tell the phone it is not, and reactivate the microphone
via the software to send to other phone in call.

Something has altered this that has not been rectified
by factory reset.

Tbh Foinavon I'd rather not purchase a new phone at all, as barring this issue everything else appears to be working ok, however; if my hand is forced I will look up those alternatives you mentioned before I make any firm decision. Thanks for the input.

I'm also thinking along the same lines yhtl. Surely there's something that's been missed, probably something really simple, for you guys anyway. Can't be fluff or similar in the mike or the other apps wouldn't work. I haven't yet downloaded a phone app, but I have about 5/6 to choose from on Google play store, which I assume is my best route. Google's own one is as good as any (stars) it would appear.

I couldn't get the sound on Google maps, when I used my mobile in the car.
I went through all the instructions and took advice. No good.

The sound work in the house, them went off when I got in the car.
Then I remembered I'd paired the mobile with Bluetooth in the car. So I unpaired the mobile with the car and the sound came on.

Can you get sound when you’re away from your house?
It might be something in the house affecting it.

Can you reset the phone to factory settings?

Google maps works fine when paired in my car, although I do need the volume on max to hear it.

Tried factory reset yesterday Dr C, via the Samsung helpline who walked me through it. No joy. The only good news is that via this thread and the helpline I've learned a lot more about mobiles, even if I've barely scratched the surface.

Stick the earpiece jack in and see if you can hear through that, it might work after you pull it out.

Can't find the earpiece and not in the box; heaven only knows where that's gone. I tried normal headphones with a jack and they worked fine, but it hasn't resolved the issue.

This has got strange. Just downloaded Google dialler and that doesn't work either. Exactly the same issues so is it the software?

The output from the mic is being sent somewhere
and needs to be reconnected to phone.

My problem is that I'm housebound for at least another week or two, maybe longer. Just waiting for doc to tell me I can drive again. As I seldom use it I can probably get by for this time on hands-free alone so no biggie, but if any of you have any other suggestions I'm all ears.

They are saying that it might be a sim issue. Actually, I forgot to mention that Samsung also said that yesterday. Does that sound right?

Anyway, to test this my daughter is going to pop round on Saturday and try it in her phone. If that don't work then next step is either shop or new phone.

unless that can direct where the output
from the microphone goes to.

Have they ordered you a new sim card, if it is
sim card you will need a new one. Then get phone
number reassigned to new sim.

Maybe stick her sim in your phone too.

Does calling over wifi, so independent of your sim, through an app like signal or whatsapp work? I don't really know about phones either, and it's a terrible clusterf*ck of every maker doing their own soup, but maybe a wifi call working would indeed hint at it being a sim/carrier problem.

They suggested to do it both ways. They told me if I ordered a new sim I will lose my phone for 2/3 days whilst they send a new one, but everything will remain the same (number etc) on the new sim. If it somehow is the sim, it would make sense why the new app didn't work either.

I don't use apps as a rule edy, but phone doesn't work with home wi-fi or when out the other day with daughter on standard tariff.

Though I do find it mysterious that a sim problem would only cause the problem directly on the phone and not when speaking through bluetooth.

They both mentioned it. I guess if my daughter can't speak either on it then problem solved. I'm not counting my chickens though.

You've all been a great help and I really do appreciate the effort you've all put in to help me. Hopefully I'll have my answer (no pun intended) in a few days. If it does turn out to be a sim then we all would have learned something here.

We got new sim when dad changed to smartphone
and he was on temp number until they switched
him, about 2 days.

Got Mrs an iPhone, and same thing about 36 hours.

But had they sent you one you could have tested it
and switched number whilst using temp number
assigned to card, for 2 days or so.

Of course it might not solve problem.


Old days you could pick up a pay as go sim anywhere
and stick it in, that would soon test it.

Same here when I first got the phone. It had its own number and then they changed it to my existing number. Probably a similar timeframe. I did have a spare phone (cheap and cheerful) for a back-up but when granddaughter broke hers I let her have it.

Daughter has just been round and sim works fine in her phone and her sim doesn't work in my phone either, proving it is the phone that is at fault. I guess the next step is to go to the shop as a last resort before a new purchase.
