The chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has resigned following a series of controversies, including a major data breach and the unlawful disciplining of two junior officers.  Simon Byrne had faced a motion of no-confidence in his leadership from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
Mr. Byrne announced his resignation after an emergency meeting of the Policing Board. “The last few days have been very difficult for all concerned,” he said in a statement. “Regardless of the rights and wrongs, it is now time for someone new to lead this proud and resolute organization.”
The top police official in Northern Ireland resigned on Monday after a series of scandals, raising questions about police leadership in a region where law enforcement has long been a contentious issue, and prompting calls for further changes in the force.

Mr. Byrne resisted demands for his resignation after the data incident, but his position became increasingly fragile after Aug. 29, when a court ruled that a decision to discipline two junior officers in 2021 had been intended not to uphold the law, but to assuage criticism from Sinn Fein, the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The party, which was once the political arm of the Irish Republican Army, favors unification with the Republic of Ireland and for decades had a heated — and deadly — relationship with the region’s policing authorities.

The junior police officers had arrested a man in February 2021 over a suspected breach of coronavirus restrictions and disorderly behavior, after he attended a commemoration of a 1992 attack in which he had been shot and wounded, and five other people were murdered. Neither of the officers “had any idea that the gathering was a commemorative anniversary,” they told the court. The man was later released without charge.

The party’s top official in Northern Ireland, Michelle O’Neill, tweeted at the time that the police force was “turning a blind eye” to loyalist paramilitaries — those engaging in violence as part of a decades-long fight to maintain the region’s status as part of the United Kingdom — “while targeting those laying flowers on the anniversary of loved ones.”

A Sussex Police custody inspector allegedly told a woman as he sexually assaulted her “you’re saying no but I think you’re actually saying yes”, a court has heard.

On the first day of a trial at Hove Crown Court, jurors heard how Mike Sinden, 35, of Kinfauns Avenue, Eastbourne, pulled the woman, who was known to him, into an alleyway.

The pair were on a night out with friends in Eastbourne on March 10 2022, the court heard.

Prosecuting, Rachel Beckett told the court how the alleged victim said “no” several times as Sinden pushed her up against the wall and tried to kiss her, putting his hands up her dress and underwear after the pair went out of a club for a cigarette.

When other members of the group came out of the club, she told the defendant they were coming and walked out of the alleyway.

The court also heard that as the group were going to get taxis because the woman wanted to go home, Sinden walked up beside the woman and said: “Oh, do you hate me now?”

Sinden denies the charge of sexual assault by penetration and his alleged comments on that night.

In a prepared statement to police, Sinden also said sexual activity was “entirely consensual”.

Thug attacked Eastbourne woman and seared her skin with hair straighteners
Fabio Paulo, 28, attacked the woman in her own home
A thug has been jailed for torturing a "vulnerable" woman with hair straighteners and stamping on her with such force he left an imprint on her back. Violent misogynist Fabio Paulo, 28, repeatedly kicked and punched the woman in the "horrific" attack in her Eastbourne home as he demanded she gave him £500.

The victim was known to Paulo and when she refused to give him the cash he plugged in her hair straighteners and seared her skin. She was hospitalised with 13 separate injuries, including an imprint on her back where he stamped on her during the attack at her home on March 18 this year.

Yesterday, he was given an indefinite jail sentence by Judge Richard Hayward at Lewes Crown Court and ordered to serve a minimum of two years before he will be considered for parole.

A doctor who sexually assaulted a patient who he visited at her home after she had been discharged from hospital has been jailed.

Simon Abraham, who worked at Eastbourne District General Hospital, contacted the woman in October 2020 after she had been treated for severe headaches. He claimed that he had had a call from a colleague who was concerned about her condition and that he had been trained in specialist massage in India for two years.

She agreed to his visit, but during the massage he sexually assaulted her. He left when a visitor came to the house, but continued to phone her. She contacted the hospital who advised her that they would investigate, but she should also contact police.

DC Jo Gledhill said: "Abraham took advantage of the victim's pain, fraudulently accessing her patient details even though he wasn't officially treating her, and then visiting her when he finished work, claiming that he could massage her headache away.

"When he was arrested, he denied that it happened at all, but then asked for a further interview where he admitted going to her house, but did not sexually touch her.

"We will always take reports of this nature very seriously and specially trained officers will deal with your call. If you have been sexually assaulted, please contact us and we will investigate."

Abraham, 34, of Penrith Way, Eastbourne, appeared at Chichester Crown Court on May 26 and was found guilty of sexual assault on a female after a trial lasting four days. He reappeared on Friday, July 14, when he was sentenced to 18 months in prison - nine months custodial and nine months on licence.

He will be placed on the sex offenders' register for ten years and is subject to a five year restraining order to protect the victim from contact by him.

HORRIFIC ORDEAL I was kidnapped and raped alongside a pal when we were just 10 by vile paedo – I hope sick perv is NEVER freed
Morgan Johnson
Published: 0:49, 19 Mar 2023Updated: 3:51, 19 Mar 2023

A WOMAN who was kidnapped and raped alongside her pal when they were just 10 has demanded the vile paedophile is NEVER freed.

Charlene Lunnon and best friend Lisa Hoodless were snatched as they walked to school back in 1999.

The pair were put into the boot of a car by predator Alan Hopkinson before he subjected them to a horrific 75-hour ordeal.

Hopkinson drove them to his perverted lair in Eastbourne, East Sussex, where he tied them to beds and raped them.

He was handed nine life sentences for the crimes he carried out on multiple victims.

Charlene, now 34, has pleaded with a parole hearing not to let the "dangerous man" out.

He is due to face a panel in a few weeks as he begs for his release.

Charlene told the Mirror: “It is not safe to let him out on the streets where he could prey on other children, just like he did with me.

“I have been told he still cuts out pictures of children from newspapers and keeps them in his cell.”

Charlene said her message to the parole board would be: "Don't release this man."
