Joel Lia, 27, the sixth passenger in the car, was charged with driving the vehicle without a licence or insurance in Porthcawl earlier that evening.
He pleaded guilty to both charges and his case, which was heard in private, was adjourned until 24 August. Joel had just been released from a prison for trafficking crack, apparently. The ages are not that odd tbf, older 'bad boys' with money can be quite attractive to gullible, naïve girls who have had drink/drugs/gas. Someone who worked for me was in an accident a bit like this. She was a passenger, in the middle of the back seat, with older boys. It was a full speed head on collision and she went straight through the windscreen from the back seat. It was fatal for others involved. She experienced terrible injuries and still has (or had the last time I saw her) shards of glass embedded in her face. She actually won a large insurance claim as her lawyer successfully argued that it was a 'fight or flight' scenario, and that she plausibly undone the seatbelt as they were about to hit the oncoming car. Seemed utterly implausible to me. |

A man who showed a "total disregard for the law" when he filmed himself driving at speeds of up to 90mph while inhaling from balloons hours before a crash in which three people died has been jailed.
Shane Andrew Loughlin, 32, of Rumney, Cardiff, previously admitted to driving a Volkswagen Tiguan dangerously on the M4, as well as driving the vehicle while disqualified. The offences, relating to Loughlin driving at around 10pm on March 3, were not connected to a collision involving the same vehicle, which happened near the St Mellons area of Cardiff at 2.03am on March 4. Loughlin was a rear-seat passenger at the time of that crash, which resulted in the deaths of driver Rafel Jeanne, 24, and passengers Darcy Ross and Eve Smith, both 21, and sustained serious injuries. Video footage played to Cardiff Crown Court on Friday afternoon showed Loughlin inhaling from balloons as he drove the Tiguan at speeds of up to 90mph along the M4, with the car crossing the lines of the road. The court heard Loughlin, who has three young children, at times did not have either hand on the wheel as he inhaled nitrous oxide from the balloon. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, jailed Loughlin for 17 months  WTF and told him it was "luck, not judgment" that he had not injured or killed anyone that night. She said: "This was a deliberate decision to drive dangerously. You ignored the rules of the road and disregarded the risks to others. It was prolonged driving and prolonged use of the mobile phone to record what you were doing. You had passengers in the vehicle. You were filming, it would appear, to be able to share that video with others."She continued: "That night, you showed a total disregard for the law. You know full well the consequences that can arise from a road traffic collision. It was luck, not judgment, that meant you didn't seriously injure or kill anyone else or yourself." The judge said Loughlin had a "truly appalling" record of criminal convictions, including driving offences, and was the subject of a driving ban at the time of the incident. She disqualified him from driving for two years and eight months. Cardiff crash: Survivor Shane Loughlin put behind bars for drink driving
St Mellons crash survivor Shane Loughlin has been remanded in prison for drink driving over the weekend, just days after appearing in court for other serious driving offences. Loughlin was charged after officers from the South Wales Police Roads Policing Unit conducted a proactive stop in the Llandaff North area in the early hours Saturday, 2 September. Loughlin, 32, was stopped by officers on Aberporth Road at around 4.20am and was arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences. He was charged with driving over the prescribed limit and driving while disqualified. At a hearing at Cardiff Magistrates, Loughlin pleaded guilty to all the offences. Loughlin was already on bail after a previous hearing on Tuesday 22nd August saw him admit to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified on the M4 in March He had been driving a car hours before it was involved in a fatal crash in St Mellons. At the time of the crash he was a passenger and was not charged in relation to the collision that killed three people. Police had previously found Loughlin's phone in the wrecked car which had four incriminating videos showing him driving along the M4 motorway with no hands on the wheel as he inhaled from a balloon. The footage showed Loughlin filming himself as he drove between 80-90mph as he swerved between lanes. He was handed an interim driving ban ahead of the scheduled appearance at court but he was arrested within 10 days. In court today, Prosecutor Gregory Lloyd said: "The defendant was bailed by the court and given an interim disqualification and 10 days later he was back behind the wheel not just as a disqualified driver but drunk. "He remains a danger to the community. He knew the risk of driving and did anyway." Loughlin's solicitor Neil Evans applied for him to be bailed ahead of sentence. He told the court as a result of injuries sustained in the crash Loughlin suffered from heart problems and needed further medical attention. But District Judge David Webster said he "feared Loughlin would commit further offences" if he were freed and "remanded him in custody" ahead of sentence later this month. He said: "There are substantial grounds for believing that if you are admitted to bail you will commit further offences and that no amount of bail conditions will provide an alternative safeguard - you will be remanded in custody." Loughlin, of Rumney, Cardiff, was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for the other driving offences on 15 September. He will be sentenced for September's offences at a later date. South Wales Police said the offences were not connected with the fatal collision which later happened at 2.03am on Saturday 4 March, but do involve the same vehicle.
