Why do you think it is up to the French to prevent people leaving their country.

The U.K. doesn’t do much to prevent those arriving. Those fleeing France with an Afghan passport won’t be deported from U.K. They will almost certainly be granted asylum and be allowed to legally live in U.K. with access to taxpayer funded health, education , housing.
Clearly many think it is worth paying a few thousand for a place on an overcrowded boat.
Report Dr Crippen August 13, 2023 10:30 AM BST
The UK government doesn't want to stop them, and if they did it would only be temporary until after the next election when they would let them start coming again.

A vote for either of the main parties is a vote for mass immigration.

What do you suggest we do Mexico Sink the Boats ? Whats your brilliant Idea for stopping them ?

We all await your Answer ..

The way to stop them is Patrols on the French Side , Botes Destroyed  before entering the water .No Bote No go IMVHO

A helicopter could quite easily Pick out where they are before the BOTES enter the water ,Foot Patrols take care of the Botes

Not hard is it ? Who is making the Dinghies ?  Charge them with assisting with illegal Immigration

It is very difficult to cross the channel with the prevailing south westerlies ,at a slow speed you are likely to be blown miles off course and take the "spanish armada" route to oblivion ,unless of course you had a rendezvous halfway planned.
The French will not want any UK force on their huge coastline (in or out the EU)and crossings will increase massively while we have such a generous "package" on the table.
The crossings to Italy have nearly doubled and this will soon impact here.

There comes a point where there is little benefit to be gained from working over benefits received from staying at home. Why do you think many of the unemployed don't want to fill the low-paid jobs that we are asking immigrants to come here to do? After the fiasco of the lockdown measures, we should be under no illusion of the existence of a magic money tree.

The UK system rewards failure for the state. Absolutely any area you wish to look. The worse the nhs does, the more taxpayer money it swallows up. Just look at how they managed to leverage the removal of the lifetime allowance, and the consultants threaten strike action anyway. The liabilities of public sector pensions alone were already eye watering.

Any quarter brain would know that any deal with france to do with the illegal boat people had to be pegged to performance. But oh no, we just give them the money and hope they will action something which is patently not in their interest, politically or financially. How do they rinse more money off the UK, yes that's right, allow more boat people to escape their country, and refuse to take them back.
Report Mexico August 14, 2023 4:55 PM BST

U.K. has zero negotiating position with France.

We can say we want performance related pay & they can say no. What exactly do France gain in preventing people who don’t want to be in France from leaving.

Any Afghan is aware that by fleeing France they will almost certainly be granted asylum in U.K. Housing, healthcare, education will be provided by U.K. taxpayer.

It isn’t the French who keep granting asylum to people who have crossed the channel.
Why would France make much effort to stop people who don’t want to be in France from leaving their country ?
The U.K. welcomes people who make the crossing then complain that another country hasn’t prevented then from arriving here.

Calais is no longer British & this U.K. government don’t have any plans to regain that territory.

I don’t think anybody is in prison in U.K. for getting on a small boat.
Those with an Afghan passport will almost certainly be granted asylum.

The U.K. can’t deal with this issue and desperately trying to blame somebody else.
Calais is no longer part of the U.K.

40,000 crossing the channel is still a small number compared to legal immigration into U.K. Difficult to blame the legal immigration on France, I suspect those on here scrounging from the taxpayers will try to.

They are getting a lot of money from us to stop the crossings, this is a way to do it. Somebody is on French soil, receiving the dinghies, organising the rendezvous and allocating the places. Others might be in other EU countries who could be extradited. One would hope our brilliant PM would have stipulated such things when agreeing to hand over our dosh, although on second thoughts...Sad

You claim that the French are breaking the service level agreement in the contract with U.K.
I haven’t seen the contract, could you provide a link and highlight the bits they are failing on.

Why would the French stop people who don’t want to be in France from leaving France.

Meanwhile the uk will keep on giving asylum to many who make this journey. Those have little chance of getting asylum are allowed to remain while the government spend months/years deciding that they won’t get asylum.

It is a U.K. issue, why should the French do any more without being paid for any extra work?
Report Dr Crippen August 15, 2023 8:52 PM BST
Plenty of scope to arrest these criminals, so why isn't it being done?

Because the French don't want the migrants. They're well shut of them. And to be seen stopping the crossings would be bad for Macron politically.
So they stop a few of them for the millions we give them.

The French will never co-operate in stopping the crossings.
We have to act by ourselves. But this government hasn’t got the will to stop them anyway.
Report nineteen points August 15, 2023 8:57 PM BST

I'm saying Mex that our not so clever government didn't think it through and make the money conditional on arresting the traffickers. Putting a few extra patrols on the beaches is a waste of time, there are miles of dunes along that coast. As Dr Crippen says, the French are glad to see the back of them.
I suspect we will eventually end up with insanitary tent cities just like France.
Report nineteen points August 16, 2023 8:06 AM BST
there may be miles of coast but how much is accessable for 50 folk to get there, board a dinghy that has to be transported there and launched at the right tide times? i am sure this could be detected a bit better.maybe if they imagined them to be white working class folk marching against something they might have more luck finding them?
Report tanglefoot August 16, 2023 9:37 AM BST
Some of the money that the British gave to the French to help stop the Channel crossings was spent on a free bus service from the camps to the crossing beaches, all the French do when apprehending migrants is to put them back on the bus so they can get use the service the next day.

16 boats today.
Estimated number of illegal boat immigrants today: 800

Weather looks favourable tomorrow:
I'd go for double figure number of boats "rescued" by RNLI tomorrow and for every day until summer ends.
Obviously, if the weather is bad, the pools panel will be sitting again...
Report flat16 August 23, 2023 6:21 AM BST
The wokery eagerly await for the kneeler to bring in "safe routes" for the illegal economic migrants.
I suggest we already have one ,two key components of UK society enable this ,border farce of the civil service and the RNLI ,a boat arrived laden at 230 am ,meaning all available tech was used for the people smugglers to contact a benign charity ,who of course contacted  border farce and the RNLI and a mid channel rendezvous arranged
Although weather forecasts and tide tables  have always been available the channel could always be a dangerous crossing but as a substantial fleet now eagerly awaits it is now much much safer.
So much so,crossings will be made more frequently ,heavily loaded and in less favourable weather ,indeed the business model of the smugglers has changed ,they can now offer a cheaper more frequent ,more reliable, quicker service to the masses.
All because they meet them halfway ,now all that remains is to ask their dietary requirements ,accommodation needs and of course their list of dependants.
The wind and our "pirates" protected us from the Spanish armada ,the RAF from the Germans ,now we provide water taxis and squabble about "two to a room" and discuss rejoining the already migrant overwhelmed EU, to ludicrously open our borders to keep them out .
Report .Marksman. August 23, 2023 11:12 AM BST
From the government's own website (year ending March 2023):
small boat arrivals (that we know about):  44,797
small boat arrivals that applied for asylum:  40,444
still waiting a decision (they have been waiting between 5 and 17 months!) 33,299  (And this does not include the huge backlog from previous years which is still ongoing)

Applications which received an initial decision (% of applications): 504 (1%)
Refused:                                                             156

Now to me these statistics indicate that things aren't really going particularly well, but the following is the press statement from the government website:

Our priority is to stop the boats, and our Small Boats Operational Command is working alongside our French partners and other agencies to disrupt the people smugglers.

The government is going even further through our Illegal Migration Act which will mean that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and promptly removed to their country of origin or a safe third country

Any one who sets off in a little boat in these conditions deserves to be left to their fate.  RNLI should remember whose contributions fund them:  Decent British people who remembered them in their wills.  Not foreign invaders who don't contribute to anything and have no intention of doing so in the future.
