A large accommodation barge that will controversially house hundreds of asylum seekers has left its berth in Cornwall and is heading to the South Coast port of Portland.

Video from Falmouth harbour showed the Bibby Stockholm being moved out to sea by tug boats at about 09:00 on Monday.

The vessel will be a temporary home for up to 500 single adult male asylum seekers under Home Office plans to ease the pressure on the asylum system.

I can see that some people are inclined to see the country financially ruined through uncontrolled immigration, and by dint of that, its identity is being eroded away. London is no longer recognisable, or recoverable. This is the direction of travel for the entire country. Instead of the people 'in charge' doing something about it, they are expediting it.
Report lapsy pa July 21, 2023 2:45 PM BST

It obviously started with opening up to the EU and 400 million potential people.

We still don't exactly know who comes in and who leaves.

However the point is, that's a policy position. If you don't think that's the right thing. And you should train the millions of people already here, not working, to do jobs, rather than importing people to do them does not make you a racist.

I get why people want mass uncontrolled immigration, I just don't believe it's the right policy. People who want that don't like the identity of the country they were either born in, or moved to.

Not a shock. This is the new version of politics where the ministers in charge of the brief don't make the decisions. Every PM since and including Blair has been extremely liberal on immigration, whilst of course claiming the opposite in Tory cases.

Anyway, the central point here is not the policy. It is that arguing for a change of it in practice is an entirely rational position. People who are going to incur the ulez charge from August have had well over a year to get emission compliant vehicles. There is a scrappage scheme. They can switch to public transport. They can use bikes both normal and electric.

There are so many options to avoid the charge. Are we to put up with air pollution until the last of the car lobby has passed from this world?
