The standing charge rise

So we're seeing (and are about to see) a growing number of solar panels and pumps etc. This is just a way of them scalping isn't it? Keep the profits high even when they're not actually selling as much. Same as Sky pushing the higher costs towards the basic telly rather than the add ons.

Energy companies do not have to charge a standing charge.

Tesco don't charge an admission fee, neither do sainsburys.

They buy their energy, or produce their own, to sell on to us, the same
as any other traders.

It's just another cartel fixing the way they
guarantee their profit.

Standing charges AND unit costs make price
comparison more difficult, so hit consumers
who are unable to calculate exactly which is
the best deal for them over, say, a 2 year fixed contract.

An increase in the cost of domestic energy in England, Wales and Scotland has taken effect, adding pressure to household budgets in the new year.

A higher price cap, set by regulator Ofgem, from now to April means gas and electricity costs will be 5% higher than the last three months.

A household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will see their annual bill go up by £94.

But forecasts suggest energy prices could come down sharply in the spring.

Another con, and reduction just in time for election after budget?

Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 1, 2024 4:16 PM GMT
Well yeah, but people have come to understand annual
price, with all of its flaws, so makes a consistent
comparison.

There's no guarantee price falls in April but
there's a very strong likelyhood given the behaviour
of gas prices at the moment.

Easy enough to divide 95 by 12 to see what your
direct debit might be doing.

Ofgem seem happy for us to be overpaying to
cover losses of failed energy companies, so that
surely comes to an end at some point, but they
want to add £16 to cover bills of those that wont
pay, but are not on pre pay meters...

Domestic energy bills are predicted to fall by a further 7% in July, offering some relief to households struggling with their budgets.

The bill for a home using a typical amount of gas and electricity could drop from £1,690 a year to £1,574, according to consultancy Cornwall Insight.

That follows previous falls and would mean a typical annual bill could be £500 down on last summer.

Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 24, 2024 8:47 AM BST
NEWS. Price cap down 7%: The good, The bad, The ugly! Feel free to share

- The Good. The energy price cap is to drop an average 7.2% for Direct Debit customers on 1 July. 6.9% for prepay customers, 7.1% for those who pay in receipt of bills. So roughly for each £100 you pay now, you'll pay £93 from July to Sept (the price cap changes every 3mths)

- The Bad. The standing charges will remain high, they are virtually unchanged. All the cut is via the Unit Rates. So higher users will see a proportionately bigger cut than lower users.  For Direct Debit from July...

Elec unit rate 22.36p/kwH (down 9% from 24.5p)
Elec standing charge 60.12p/day (from 60.1p)
Gas unit rate 5.48p/kwH (down 9% from 6.04p)
Gas standing charge 31.41p (from 31.43p)

Though I hear the standing rate consultation results will be published this 'summer' (whenever that is).

- The Ugly. Cornwall Insight has put out its new predictions and they don't make easy reading.  If they're right this is the last fall, and the coming rises are big.

On 1 July its confirmed it drops 7%, so for every £100 paid today you pay £93. Then on 1 Oct it's predicted to  rise 12%, so you'll go back up and be paying £104. Then on 1 Jan the crystal ball is saying it'll stay flat (at £104).

All this makes the cheapest fixes which are currently 9% cheaper than now (so £91 per £100 on the price cap) look a decent bet - you can do a full comparison via the MSE Cheap Energy Club.
