Putting aside all allegiances, it seems like a master-stroke by Labour / Starmer. But its more by accident than design. They've made a virtue out of a necessity.
Worst case - Durham police issue a fine on Starmer, he resigns. He will. Johnson would be obliged to do so - but as I said of course he won't.Problem is - this wont be forgotten and he becomes an even bigger electorate liability. Tory party will need to get rid before next election. Internal pressure will be huge.

Nope, completely wrong. They wont, they wont look at the 'available facts' at all - even though Starmers indiscretions are much less than Johnsons - the public will see them as both equally guilty. Even if other way around, and Starmer's more egregious than Johnsons - again equally guilty in the court of public opinion.

Master Stroke is probably an exaggeration, but from being on the attack for a while over partygate, they were on the defensive over Starmer - but are now on the attack again- admittedly in a high-stakes gamble - they have been forced into.

LONDON — Labour Party staff were drunk at a controversial curry and beer gathering which is being investigated by police for a possible breach of England’s coronavirus rules back in April 2021, a person familiar with what happened that night told POLITICO’s London Playbook.
Opposition leader Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure over the event he attended in Durham with his deputy Angela Rayner. The gathering — billed by the party as a work-related stop during campaigning — took place while most indoor socializing was illegal under COVID-19 regulations.
The suggestion that people present were drunk casts doubt on whether the event — dubbed “Beergate” by parts of the U.K. media — was reasonably necessary for campaign purposes, as the law required.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Keir was working, a takeaway was made available in the kitchen, and he ate between work demands. No rules were broken.”
However, the person familiar with the event told Playbook some junior staffers present “were p*ssed and obviously weren’t working so I remember thinking: why are they here?”
They said no work was being done during or after the curry ordered in from a local takeaway and therefore that the event “crossed the line” and breached COVID laws.
They added: “It was Friday night after nine o’clock and some people were drinking … Of course it crossed the line.”
The Leader of the Opposition’s Office (LOTO) and the Labour Party did not deny the claim when given multiple opportunities by Playbook.
Mary Foy, the Labour MP whose office the events took place in and whose staff attended, did not respond to a request for comment.

Covid fines were meant to be a gentle reminder to do the right thing and try and follow the guidelines

They, unlike other constabularies, do not retrospectively fine people, hence why Sir Keir chose to 'die' on his sword. A police investigation, however was enough for him to demand Boris to resign but never mind small detail. Fwiw, I say what I say then and now, all b1tching and no big deal. Move on. The biggest problem the tories have stems back from that time. They basically have exhausted possible coalition partners which means in order to retain power they need to get an overall majority. With Boris in charge, that is a very long shot indeed.
We all know council elections mid term mean nowt. Anyways, Labour hardly pulled up trees. Was what they used to be at times. Lib dem stuff. Can't see it working same way in the GE unless they somehow align.
The basic fact now is that Boris approval ratings are abysmal and folks won't vote for him. They might vote tory under another leader though.
Honestly think come GE time, lib dems will still be unforgiven. Be amazed if they were in any position to form part of a coalition, and if they did, it would be a very, very small part.

Keir approval ratings are fairly steady, particularly in areas of the country Labour need to win.
Tories need to get a majority, so 326+ seats, perhaps a little less if Sinn Fein don't take up their seats as usual. Right now, they are probably on target for around 250 seats.

Yep, you don't want to be heavily involved in the backing side for the reasons you say. Just one independent/ Northern Ireland grouping could scupper you. Laying is more appealing.
The danger mark for Labour is around the 280 zone. They couldn't govern without SNP support.

It's in the hands of the police now. If Starmer is fined, he will resign. Boris position then becomes completely untenable. If Starmer isn't fined, Boris position is hopeless.
