The '87 storm happened during the night; the devastation it left was nothing liked I'd ever seen before, or since. This is often mistaken for the '90 storm that hit us during the day and resulted in more loss of life, but was not as bad. If '87 had been during the day I feel it would have eclipsed the deaths of '90

A little story that made me proud to work for the Prudential at the time of the '87 storm. After the dust had settled we were told to settle all claims immediately. The clients were to get the work done and as long as they had a receipt for the work it would be honoured. It is such a good feeling telling clients to just go ahead... WE WILL PAY!!!

Suffice to say they (at least) doubled the premiums the following year. I was on 15% commission and although I lost a lot of clients from this increase, many of them understood and still paid, which more than covered my lost clients... I might even have turned a small profit.

The pedigree pups were electrocuted when a power line crashed onto their kennel block after being toppled by strong winds.

The incident happened Yorkshire when a tree blew down bringing the 11k voltage powerline with it, sparking an investigation by Northern Power Grid.

Over blown to a large extent BUT

I told Mrs ‘Death to stay in just in case of tiles flying off roofs and debris. She of course ignored me but did see fallen tiles and did stay in for the rest of the day except to go and see the fallen tree blocking the road!

People do die in these circumstances and it is stupid to go out without purpose. I mean dying in your thirties because a tree fell on your car is as stupid as it is tragic.

What is also worrying is that the weather became a news event. It was a storm or whatever the technical term is, maybe a gale I don’t know but the news channels were like teenagers using Instagram on whizz. I do like watching extreme weather but this was far from extreme.

"Three people died in the UK in Storm Eunice on Friday as fierce winds toppled trees and sent debris flying. A 122mph gust on the Isle of Wight set a provisional record in England, and as of Saturday morning more than 230,000 homes were left without power.".

All depends where you are in the country. I am close to the South coast and the winds were mental. next doors ridge tiles were torn off, smashed the roof and completely destroyed their fence.  Missed their car by fractions. Were like missiles. Trees torn down, lying across the road. We had no power or mobile service for twenty two hours. Used the wood fire and candles. Second time this week we were without power. Nobody I know was injured or killed but it was pretty destructive nonetheless.

Report Just Checking February 20, 2022 1:46 AM GMT
This thread is branching out, can we not leaf it behind and get back to the root of the argument? Devil!

I find a toppled old tree a bit thought provoking. I was looking at the root system of a toppled huge old tree the other day, jumped into the little crater left (it toppled at the roots). It surprised me how the roots went sideways and so little down, and were thinner than expected.

Obviously makes biological sense to go sideways for maximum nutrients/water etc, but still, sad. It'll be evolutionary of course. If it was ideal to live forever, it'd want a few huge roots going vertically down, but it ideally wants to spread out as quickly as possible as young as possible and start spitting out baby trees, by time it's toppled by wind (if it happens, once in a generation) .. the long game .. evolutionary wise .. who cares :)

The tree wasting time sticking big roots down, loses.
