As I said a zero hour contract where you have to be available for a vast number of hours over a week is impossible if you have kids

Indeed. I was unemployed in 2013. Fancied a career change and realised I'd need to start low and work up but I just didn't get a look in and recruiters told me I was "not a long term investment" in their clients' eyes.
