It all depends on how much fuel you use. You would need to do a very high mileage to make it financially worthwhile and then you would be more concerned about range and recharging time. If you are an average or low mileage user, the price would need to go up a lot more than this. In my case, I use about 6oo litres a year. The price would need to go up to 10 times what it is now to make me even think about it let alone actually do it. The only incentive at present is the wish to be seen as virtuous and many people actually do buy cars for show and will pay over the odds for a badge. I refer you to the Italian cars thread. Devil

Sticking prices up despite crude falls

Diesel prices in the UK rose by an average of more than 2p in a day as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to affect global oil costs.

The fuel jumped to a record £1.76 per litre on Tuesday, up from almost £1.74 on Monday.

Petrol prices, which have also increased to record highs, rose to almost £1.65p a litre from about £1.64.

Since last Wednesday, the average price for a litre of petrol has fallen by 3.71p to 163.30p per litre, while diesel has fallen 2.79p to 177.11p.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: "Unfortunately, wholesale fuel prices were already rising before the chancellor made his announcement on fuel duty last week.

"This meant retailers were buying fuel in at a higher cost than they were a week earlier, which meant drivers may not have immediately and fully benefitted from the duty cut.

"Wholesale prices are currently falling, but it's likely to be next week before we see what impact this has at the pumps."

UK diesel prices rose to a record of just over £1.80 a litre as efforts to stop importing fuel from Russia pushed up costs for retailers, the RAC said.

After the previous record of £1.79 was set in March following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, prices dipped but have risen again in recent weeks.

The RAC said petrol prices went up by nearly 3p a litre since the start of May and were £1.66 a litre on average.

Soaring fuel prices have put the haulage industry in crisis with the cost of running one lorry up £20,000 on last year, a freight boss has said.

Lesley O'Brien, director of Freight Link Europe, said hauliers should get a fuel tax rebate so they could pass the savings on to customers.

It comes after the RAC warned the price of petrol could soon hit 180p a litre and diesel 190p.

The motoring group called for "radical government intervention urgently".

Latest figures from the RAC show the average cost of a litre of petrol rose from 177.88p on Sunday to 178.50p on Monday - a rise of 0.6p in 24 hours.

Over the same period, the average diesel price rose from 185.01p to 185.20p.
