That programme was one of the best pieces of television ever regarding politics. A truly fascinating piece of tv.

He had the cheek to say why did Ireland rebel against British rule for 500 years and then give away their independence to the EU.

Claire should have been a bit more brutal,500 years of pillaging, starvation, ethnic cleansing,to being one of Europes/Worlds wealthier nations in just 20 years since joining the EU, it puts your countries Irish activities under clear perspective Nigel.

"Who do you think built those fine buildings in the south of Ireland and in NI for that matter ?"

they were built by Irish Protestants in the 1700s

things in Ireland weren't really that bad until the 1800s

the Irish parliament was abolished and the wealthy landowning Protestants all left

this resulted in absentee landlordism and rents / agricultural profits being all sent to England

Dublin went from one of the finest cities in Europe to a bit of **** in 50 years

direct rule from London also caused the famine, there had been a similar potato blight in the 1700s but it was amanged much betetr

for anyone who doesn't know

1700-1801 Ireland was ruled by irish protestants

1801-1921 it was ruled by london
Report Giuseppe October 19, 2021 2:42 PM BST

Report Giuseppe October 19, 2021 2:48 PM BST
in the 1700s Ireland was a separate kingdom in personal union with GB

legisalton had to be approved by Westmister but this started to change in the late 1700s during Grattan's time

Grattan is the guy whose statute is outside Trinity on College Green

protestants in the south and proetstants in ulster

there are differences

you don't have this siege mentality that you see in Ulster

Grattan gave catholics the vote in irhs parlaimentray elections in the 1790s

Wellington ended the anti-catholic laws when UK prime miniser in the 1820s

Grattan and Wellington were both southern protetsants
