no one this day and age would want their son or daughter going down a mine They never did. That's why the money was so good to attract them.A lot of mining is open cast anyway.First new deep coalmine in UK for 30 years gets go aheadhttps://www.thegua

UK's biggest source of greenhouse gas? Drax 'eco' power station in Yorkshire burns wood pellets that are treated as a 'renewable' fuel but emit more carbon dioxide than coal, research shows
Analysis shows that the burning of wood for power known as biomass has been the cause of more carbon dioxide emissions than coal since 2019.
Drax burns millions of tonnes of wood to provide around 12 per cent of the UK's total electric power, generating 15.6megatonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide emissions each year, which cause the planet to heat up by trapping heat around the Earth, the greenhouse effect.

The government will no longer defend a decision, made by the previous government, to allow a controversial new coalmine in Cumbria.
The new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner, has accepted there was an “error of law” in the decision to grant planning permission for the mine in December 2022.
Consequently, the government will not now be defending two legal challenges next week against the mine – by Friends of the Earth and South Lakes Action on Climate Change

I don't understand this argument. Why is the earth better for leaving coal where it is underground? We won't run out before we transition and might as well use that as import wood pellets.

Whatever you do it will take 80 years for the new trees to grow to maturity and fully absorb the emitted carbon dioxide when according to the nutters we have only a few weeks, months or years to save the planet. It therefore makes more sense to burn coal rather than wood since it is more energy dense and you don't cut down vast numbers of trees in the process.

----you-have-to-laugh--- 12 Jul 24 22:15 It's a technical argument, as you can grow trees to replace wood but can't make coal.
................. That's my point, no one ever explains how there is any benefit in keeping coal buried if it is going to be useless in the future. We don't need to replace coal.

But wood gets an exemption as its replaceable
I'm not convinced, but that's the argument in a nett zero world.

Controversial Cumbria coal mine plan thrown out by High Court judge The decision to approve the UK's first coal mine for 30 years has been thrown out by a High Court judge.
Today's ruling likely forces Angela Rayner, the Labour government's housing, communities and local government secretary, to reconsider the planning application for the Whitehaven coal mine - this time taking into account the full damage it could do to the climate.
Mr Justice Holgate said in his judgment: "The assumption that the proposed mine would not produce a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, or would be a net zero mine, is legally flawed."
At a hearing in July, the newly elected government had already decided not to defend the previous Conservative administration's decision to greenlight the project, following new legal developments.
The future of the proposed mine is now uncertain.
