Thousands of paedophiles have operated within the French Catholic Church since 1950, the head of a panel investigating abuses by church members says.

Jean-Marc Sauvé told French media that the commission had found evidence of 2,900 to 3,200 abusers - out of a total of 115,000 priests and other clerics.

"That is a minimal estimate," he added.

The commission is to release a lengthy report on Tuesday. It is based on church, court and police archives, as well as interviews with victims.

The independent inquiry was commissioned by the French Catholic Church in 2018, following a number of scandals in other countries.

Mr Sauvé, a senior civil servant, told France's Le Monde newspaper that the panel had handed over evidence to prosecutors in 22 cases where criminal action could still be launched.

He added that bishops and other senior church officials had been told of other allegations against people who were still alive.

Commission members included doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians. More than 6,500 victims and witnesses were contacted over two and a half years. The final report is 2,500 pages long.

Christopher Lamb, of the Roman Catholic publication The Tablet, told the BBC that abuse scandals had plunged the Church into "its greatest crisis in... 500 years".

Earlier this year Pope Francis changed the Catholic Church's laws to explicitly criminalise sexual abuse, in its biggest overhaul of the criminal code for decades.

The new rules make sex abuse, grooming minors, possessing child pornography and covering up abuse an offence under Canon Law

A vicar has been sacked by the Church in Wales after being found with 219 indecent images of children.

The Rev Canon Nigel Cahill, the Rector of Aberavon, was suspended after being arrested at his Port Talbot home in June 2020.

In April he received an 18-month community order after admitting two offences of making indecent images of children.

The church's disciplinary tribunal has ordered he be expelled.

No appeal was lodged following the 5 August hearing so the deed of deposition was enrolled in the Registry of the Archbishop of Wales on Monday, the Church in Wales said.

Swansea Crown Court heard how Cahill used aliases when talking to people via Skype, and police cyber experts found his search history indicated a sexual interest in children.

Prosecutor Julie Sullivan said: "Mr Cahill said he was online talking to someone and looking at pictures of grown men.

"He said: 'I'm not denying I have looked at younger boys. It's a problem I've had for years when I'm stressed. I drink and look at pictures online'."

Jon Tarrant, defending, said all the offences were committed "in the private confines of his home".

At the time the Church in Wales said it was "deeply saddened and shocked that one of its clerics had committed such a serious offence"

When you have time donny, look up the Holy Trinity paedo ring in Huddersfield 1970s. The teacher -Wilcox- was our music teacher. A very scary man in lesson time, and much worse if he got some boy to stay behind after class.
He did this by inserting a piece of paper with lewd writing on it, into the music book of his intended victim. When he said open the book at page whatever, the paper would fall out and he would be on it like a flash, accusing them of writing filth. They would have to stay behind and discuss sexual matters.
I knew one lad it happened to, can't remember if he reported it but I think not.

some dreadful stories. What is more shocking is that they got away with it and people were complicit in protecting them. That is the bit I find so unpalatable. There will always be monsters but how could you let a child be abused in that way and protect the monster? I just don't get that particularly in this country when if anyone mistreats an animal there is a public outrage but as we have heard even now this is still going on and people are being protected. Whatever our political persuasions on this we must stand together.

A man who groomed and sexually abused vulnerable children over two decades has been jailed for at least 22 years.

In July, Carson Grimes, 65, from Luton, was convicted of 36 offences involving nine boys and girls. The youngest was five.

The inquiry has featured on Channel 4's 24 Hours in Police Custody programme.

Passing a life sentence at Luton Crown Court, Judge Lynn Tayton QC said Grimes left his victims "traumatised by what you did".

"You are a sexual predator who preyed on children and vulnerable individuals. You used alcohol and drugs to incapacitate them to abuse them," she said.

"You had a lifestyle in which rapes and sexual assaults were committed regularly with no consideration for anything other than your own gratification.

"It has taken a long time for many of them [the victims] to speak out."

Grimes, also known as Carson Phillips, of Dumfries Street, was arrested in 2018, following an allegation by one of his victims, who is now in his late 30s.

He was 11 years old when he was groomed, raped, and sexually abused in the early 1990s.

Prosecutor Martin Mulgrew described Grimes as a "modern-day Fagin" who targeted vulnerable children, many of whom had been in foster care or came from chaotic homes.

His trial heard that he began abusing children in the 1980s when he lived in London, and his behaviour escalated when he moved to Bedfordshire and continued until about 2002.

He denied the offences but was convicted of 19 counts of rape, 11 of indecent assault and six of indecency with a child.

Natania Loftman, one of the survivors of Grimes' abuse, said: "We've got closure now as a collective. We are a family who has come together through dark times to support each other.

"To any other survivors I say this - you are strong, you can come forward and speak your truth.

"You will have good days and bad days - but just come forward and do it."

Rachel Rowell, senior prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This is a truly shocking case in which a sexual predator systematically took advantage of vulnerable children who did not have strong support networks at home."

Det Supt Steve Ashdown said: "Carson Grimes is one of the most dangerous, vile and prolific offenders I have seen in my policing career.

"Our investigation established a clear picture of a man who exploited boys and girls entirely for his own sexual gratification, displaying a complete absence of morals and decency.

"We will always be on the side of victims and it is never too late to make a disclosure."

The case featured earlier this week on Channel 4's 24 Hours In Police Custody, and the second part will be broadcast at 21:00 BST on Monday

Another sorry tale back in court.

Eight men who say they were abused by paedophile football coach Barry Bennell have begun a High Court damages case after suing Manchester City.

The men, now in their 40s and 50s, made damages claims and say Bennell sexually abused them when they played youth football in north-west England more than 30 years ago.

Bennell, aged 67, is serving a 34-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual offences against boys.

Manchester City dispute the claims.

Mr Justice Johnson began overseeing a trial at the High Court in London on Monday.

A barrister representing the men told the judge the boys played for Manchester City feeder or nursery teams coached by Bennell.

James Counsell QC said the club had more than "vestigial control" over Bennell and the teams he was coaching.

"This is a claim where Manchester City had a direct interest and direct control of the feeder teams that it ran, and which Bennell coached on its behalf," he said.

"Bennell was integral to the Manchester City youth set-up, an important part of a recruitment process."

Mr Justice Johnson was told Bennell, who worked as a coach at Crewe Alexandra, is serving a 34-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual offences against boys on five separate occasions - four in the UK and one in the US.

Lawyers say the trial is expected to last several weeks.

Bennell is expected to give evidence himself via videolink from prison on 6 December.

Details of the case emerged at preliminary hearings earlier this year.

Judges have heard that the eight men were sexually and emotionally abused by Bennell between 1979 and 1985 and are claiming damages after suffering psychiatric injuries.

Lawyers say some are also claiming damages for the loss of a chance to pursue a career as a footballer.

Judges have heard that a question at the centre of the case is whether Manchester City are "vicariously liable" for Bennell's actions.

The men say he worked as a scout for City and ran various youth feeder teams, mainly under-14s, on the club's behalf and for its benefit.

They included teams known as White Knowl, New Mills Juniors, North West Derbyshire Select, Glossop Juniors, Adswood Amateurs, Pegasus and Midas.

The men argue that the relationship between Bennell and the club was "one of employment or one akin to employment".

A former children's entertainer who could not remember the number of victims he assaulted has been jailed for abusing two boys in the 1970s.

George Holden, 88, abused the young boys at trips to his home, a leisure centre and caravan site.

Holden, who worked across the country as an entertainer called Georgie The Clown, was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Derby Crown Court on Friday.

Derbyshire Police said Holden caused "untold damage to so many lives".

The force said Holden, of Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, had previously been convicted for sex offences against children in the 1960s and 1980s.

The abuse against the two boys took place at Holden's home, Queen's Park Leisure Centre and at a caravan site in Skegness.

One reported the abuse to police, who launched an investigation.
