..........in FRANCE...GERMANY and everywhere else in the world............
The BBC came under fire last night for ignoring the fact that the HGV driver shortage has affected countries throughout the world.
Around 400,000 drivers are needed across mainland Europe, including shortfalls of 40,000 in Germany.
In America, there is a shortfall of around 63,000 while China needs about four million extra drivers, according to the International Road Transport Union.
Its a Covid issue affecting not just the whole of Europe but the world. I don't understand why they are doing this but it is deeply misleading and the kind of reporting that leads to panic buying, as we have seen.
France has faced a shortage of around 43,000 drivers since 2019, when the shortfall in Italy was estimated to be around 15,000, according to analysts Transport Intelligence.
Earlier this month, Jose Gomez-Urquiza, of US immigration agency Visa Solutions, said: 'We [in America] are living through the worst driver shortage that we've seen in recent history, by far.'
Wont stop the woke and the remoaners moaning though will it, its all Brexits fault etc etc.
well I wouldn't disagree in aspects yhtl especially where somewhat unique emergencies occur but if you just effectively disown the democratic voters wishes by backdooring policies that totally undermine the break at every oportunity...a) - you don't honour the referendum and b) you never get to find out the true result of the economic/political debate to begin with.

You have a good manner Brentford,Jolly is right too, it is in part due to covid just now but the brexit being delivered is one that is short of lorry drivers, food processing, care workers, agricultural workers, hosptality workers, fookin ell. The answer a couple of years ago was The British will do it,they won't,not for £8-10 ph in a lot of cases. They aren't altogether wrong either,it is hard work, but who is expected to do it?
It is going to crumble downwards and no amount of bolloxology about Europe have drive shortages is going to justify it. Morally i agree with you Brentford but....

The back doors have to be temporary to ensure brexit works.
Government need to be far more proactive and be honest with public.
Even the racist papers are calling for more immigration

of course we could just have another referendum...
the original one was based more around philosophy than anything else as neither side of the ref' debate knew what Brexit would actually look like...
maybe we should have had a referendum on the deal that was made and a 3 option paper...

In about 84 I fell asleep in a boozer, in the cubicle loo, in Morden, because someone gave me a lift when I was fairly cut already.
I woke up to N empty pub and alarms everywhere, with a German Shepherd going nuts too T the foot of the stairs but behind a rail.
What was I to do, so I leaned over and pulled a half while waiting on the inevitable.

They tried to pin an armed robbery on me from two weeks earlier, the branch gave me he'll and held me for 36 hours.
Total truth that.

lets break a life long belief and take a tory at their words theres a shortage of drivers in EU
so common sense says you,d need to be an out of work driver in EU to be tempted to come here before patel gives you a knock on 24th dec, with all that entails travel, housing etc
someone might want to ask why these drivers arnt working in the EU currently if theres a shortage

Realistically the government just doesn't have the answers to this issue. The foreign driver scheme is clearly half arsed and designed to show they're trying. We know European drivers will tell us to f*ck off, and they do too. Similarly with trying to improve the speed of testing. You're literally looking at maybe a few dozen extra drivers a week. Compared to the numbers leaving the industry it's just not enough. Truck drivers have been treated like dirt for years; it's going to take a huge amount of investment to begin to reverse that.

People have been filling up gerry cans in the back of their cars, filling up plastic bottles and one woman a carrier bag!
Fuel vapours are heavier than air and can rest in the car and be ignited. The fuel in cans and plastic containers have to be stored somewhere, either in the car or at home. Lets talk about the OTT Health and Safety Culture!

Early this year (spring) fuel price touched £1 a litre, demand driven due to COV19. As LOCKDOWN restrictions lifted and demand increased there was not a hint of supply probs, then summer hols and mostly UK based and still not a hint of supply issues.
So why in late Sept should supply probs start?
Only things I can think of is the sudden uplift in kerosene as travel restrictions changed cause the probs, I think a lot of main airports have piped in fuel but not all.
Also there was am issue with a refinarys owners and an unpaid vat bill but there has been no hint of it being a refinary issue.
It all makes little sense, was demand so high in Sept? Bigger than July August?
Was it not a case of retailers not ordering in case of further lockdown measures, which a few on here suggested were on the cards tbf.
Whatever the reason it has nothing to do with Brexit, and doubt there are many foreign fuel tanker drivers in uk.
BP who used to own refineries in uk was very picky about its tankers drivers, these were top jobs and only a select few got them, doubt this changed.
The idea the tanker drivers all went home due to brexit is total BS.
Perfect storm of aviation fuel coming back on, heating fill up oil time, and retailers not managing the stock levels imo.
Maybe the situation has been exploited as well but hope there is an inquiry to get to bottom of it and find the truth.
Reasons for the fuel shortage are not clearEarly this year (spring) fuel price touched £1 a litre, demand driven due to COV19. As LOCKDOWN restrictions lifted and demand increased there was not a hint of supply probs, then summer hols and
Same story as the tools on here trying to say rising gas prices are due to Brexit. ( err... https://fullfact.org/online/gas-prices-brexit/) A flow chart: 1. If problem exists, see if you can frame it as due to Brexit. 2. Blame it on Brexit. 3. Goto 1 -- Apparently loads of HGV drivers have given up and the DVLA are absolutely pathetic at organising both new tests AND giving medical approval to existing HGV drivers when they need it.
I'm not tribal, I'm quite happy to say the Tories could do 10 times better and the DVLA on their watch. Also the offer of a 3 month visa for EU drivers is risable, absolutely pathetic.
But most of this is not due to Brexit. Final note, it's quite obvious given there are 100,000s of drivers with licenses that somethng is far wrong with the industry in Britain. Poor wages (which will now go up = good). Poor treatment (hopefully to get better). In fact just googling a stat on the above reveals this article. btw, you need to check driver shortages for pre-pandemic. Give you a clue, the industry reps were saying they were massively short then too. It's almost like they're under the thumb of the big employers and their job is to make it look like the industry is struggling and needs help and subsidies from the government and more laws to bring in cheap labour. Hmm!
And when you grasp that, then maybe you need to figure out what a real shortage is then. If there were these severe driver shortages years ago and things were running smoothly, and the same people on the continent are saying the same now and they're still running smoothly then it's not really a shortage. But what would an actual shortage look like? Maybe it would mean things not getting delivered, warehouses overflowing, stock stood on dockside as it's got nowhere to go, supply chain blockages, empty shelves, empty petrol stations, the army being called in to help. Maybe. Just maybe that's what an actual shortage is. The other one is just paid shills trying to lobby governments.

PoP. Are you on the same level as WD? I don't think so. Your are annoying but not a complete moron. But you apparently struggle to be. Here's a quick review of facts.
1. I think the Tories are handling the HGV thing incredibly badly. I'm not tribal. 2. I think Brexit plays a small part, but in the big picture, meh, and given facts it's not the driving factor.. 3. ... pre brexit it depressed driver wages, wages i'm happy to pay are now going up ... good . ... fairy nurf.
You see this is what annoys me. I can happily say "the tories are **** on this" as i'm an adult. it's not tribal. it's a fact. I think the Tories are shocking recently, totally useless. Lefties or SNP types can't seem to do this. I'm in no way here trying to justify "my vote" I'm being realistic, something remoaners aren't. Unlike PoliticsOrPunter, I'm not lying.

Blimey, wasn't expecting that. Government has backed down completely and allowed cabotage - ie foreign drivers to drop off here, and then do other jobs while here before heading back. Given the big jump in wage rates in the UK I suspect we might see a sudden influx of European trucks on our roads again very soon.
Good news for unblocking the ports and getting goods where they need to be, not so great news for British truck drivers.
