I saw Jimmy Greaves many times. He was my first footballing hero. A goal scorer like Muller in many ways. But neither were in the class of Mesi, Pele, Maradona, or either of the Ronaldos. His goal against Newcastle when he ran half the length of the field was something else. And of course he was largely responsible for Spurs Cup Winners Cup victory. In his prime Greaves never missed a chance hardly at all. A skilful cold hearted taker of chances.

De Stefano is a complete legend, although I never saw him even on film so it’s hard to judge. Best English midfielder I have seen is Paul Gascogne. If he had been half sensible and stayed sober he would have been pretty much the best player in the world for a short time.

Nobody mentioned another fabulous player in midfield, Gerson from the 1970 Brazilians. He had an amazing left foot.

Luigi Riva was another Italian I was thinking of but he came up short.

I couldn't get him in to my midfield because I have a soft-spot for Rivelino but like the chemistry with Maldini down that side of my defence.  Obvs I've left out players who made their name as CB (Beckenbauer/Moore/Baresi) but you've only got 11 slots...

Vittorio Pozzo (Italian pronunciation: [vitˈtɔːrjo ˈpottso]; 2 March 1886 – 21 December 1968) was an Italian football player, manager, and journalist.

The creator of the Metodo tactical formation, Pozzo is regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time,[2] and is the first person to guide a national team to two FIFA World Cup titles as coach,[3] leading the Italy national team to victory in the 1934 and 1938 FIFA World Cups.[4]

Nicknamed Il Vecchio Maestro ("The Old Master"),[5] he also led Italy to a gold medal at the 1936 Olympic football tournament, and managed the Italian championship squads of the 1930 and 1935 editions of the Central European International Cup.

from wiki........

At the international level he was the surprise star of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, as he helped Italy to a third-place finish on home soil. Coming on as substitute in Italy's first game, Schillaci went on to score six goals throughout the World Cup, claiming the Golden Boot as the leading goalscorer, and received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament ahead of established stars Lothar Matthäus and Diego Maradona, who came second and third respectively. That year he also placed second in the 1990 Ballon d'Or, behind Matthäus.
