Another surge in Covid cases in continental Europe, as well as the slow rollout of vaccines across Europe, has cast doubt on the resumption of foreign travel.

The one thing that the anniversary of the first lockdown shows up is that back then, the advisers grabbed on to anything they could to try and show it wasn't as bad as it was. Now they grab on to anything they can to try and show it is worse than it is.

i love teh way this is being phrased

"attempting to take a foreign holiday" could result in 5,000 pound fine

so is it basically illegal now to leave the country for anything other than "essential travel"?

i wonder did the commies in east germany use similar language re the berlin wall?
Report Giuseppe March 23, 2021 4:23 PM GMT
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Wall

The Eastern Bloc portrayed the Wall as protecting its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" from building a socialist state in East Germany...

The East German government claimed that the Wall was an "anti-fascist protective rampart" (German: "antifaschistischer Schutzwall") intended to dissuade aggression from the West.[57] Another official justification was the activities of Western agents in Eastern Europe.[58] The Eastern German government also claimed that West Berliners were buying out state-subsidized goods in East Berlin.
Report Giuseppe March 23, 2021 4:24 PM GMT
i'm not a conspiracy theorist, i don't think is all about control, just interested in how language is used

i don't think it's about anything

i think they arent willing to take the political heat for letting people die, so are subjecting the population to this instead

there is also a herd mentality thing going on

it would be a very brace politician to take a different path to every other country, especially when that path would result in a short term spike in deaths and total excoriation in the media

Would it not have been easier to legislate against travel companies though?

Pubs are not allowed to open fully but they can be trusted to do takeaways. It isnt particularly illegal to attempt to go the pub.

Why didnt they instruct holiday companies to stop taking people on holiday?
Report Pleasegivemeanailedontip March 23, 2021 4:38 PM GMT
Actually i guess it is illegal to attempt to go the pub because its not an exception to stay at home rules, but the question stands
Report Cider March 23, 2021 4:41 PM GMT
Boris is bold though, that's why it's so frustrating. That's why we have restored our reputation in the first place. Even I thought it was a bit bonkers to be buying all the vaxes on spec before they had been proven. I suppose there's two things at play, he thinks he can get away with it with the public while keeping the SAGE freaks happy.

Dom is a big loss to gvnt in my view. I think someone else needed to look at the political strategy while he looked after the practical one. We still need someone who can shake down the civil service.
Report Pleasegivemeanailedontip March 23, 2021 4:54 PM GMT
By travel companies i was including eurostar and airlines. The government can implement all manner of restrictions without directly impinging on peoples liberty.

I find it easier to accept that the goverment has forced a pub to close than the government forces me to act in a certain way in a pub for instance.

I dont understand why they are criminalising people in this instance rather than companies that provide the service. Doing a terrible job of explaining it though.

Foreign travel isn't banned. There are multiple exceptions. What they are trying to prevent is unofficial leisure holidays I guess, what they would deem to be unnecessary travel.

That was why i fumbled through the pub takeaway comparison. It seems to me that for whatever reason the government has decided that the only way to stop people going on a frivolous holiday is to criminalise them. When it seems like there are alternatives. Maybe there arent alternatives.

All the way along, the quality of covid related policy making tells me the people sitting on their computers making them up are a long way detached from what we would call normal life. In some abstract theory they probably make sense. On the ground, in real life, they are absurd. That's why government should stay out of peoples everyday life.
Report Cider March 23, 2021 5:18 PM GMT

I think during doms stint it was just a numbers game. It was stupid but understandable. We need to reduce transmission by another 3%. Shutting the pubs is 8%. Lets close at 10pm and call that 3%. Announcements follows that ‘the government is following the science’.

But now its just odd
Report Cider March 23, 2021 5:32 PM GMT
If you actually want to reduce social contact, having everyone go home at the same time is the last thing you want to encourage. Extended opening times preferable. They are thinking sensible people will drink less if it shuts earlier. Absurd. They'll all pile into a mates place.
