Why would that be? Isn't it much cooler and easier to go for a 5 minute stroll on a Sunday whenever you wish than to go on a Thursday hastily before work or after a long day at work?

Report GAZO May 7, 2021 8:47 AM BST
because most people dont really care who gets in
Report edy May 7, 2021 8:48 AM BST
Yeah, so shouldn't they be even less motivated to go vote and potentially wait in a queue after a long, stressful day at work?

People can get a postal vote and have
15 hours to vote.

I don't think a Sunday vote
would change results by a huge
amount.

Hartlepool got 42.7% turnout
for by election, compared to
60% at gen election in 2019.
Report GAZO May 7, 2021 8:52 AM BST

Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- May 7, 2021 8:54 AM BST
I had 3 ballot papers
One of which I didn't care
about,.. Police commissioner

Then parish council (10+ votes) and county
council (2 votes)

So I could vote for 13 candidates
or so, but only voted for 5.
Report GAZO May 7, 2021 8:55 AM BST
i would always go out of my way for a general election and usually for local elections but now the partys are pretty much the same and wouldnt have voted yesterday but for going past
Report edy May 7, 2021 8:58 AM BST
Ok. I just imagine it being more of a bother to vote on a working day for the general public, but maybe that's just my biased view as someone from a country where voting is always on a Sunday.

As you say though, if you walk directly past the polling station (and you have enough of them so there usually aren't long queues) on your ways to and from work, then that's unproblematic too.

My view is simple: in the past decade, Labour has lost touch with ordinary British people. A London-based bourgeoisie, with the support of brigades of woke social media warriors, has effectively captured the party. They mean well, of course, but their politics – obsessed with identity, division and even tech utopianism – have more in common with those of Californian high society than the kind of people who voted in Hartlepool yesterday. The loudest voices in the Labour movement over the past year in particular have focused more on pulling down Churchill’s statue than they have on helping people pull themselves up in the world. No wonder it is doing better among rich urban liberals and young university graduates than it is amongst the most important part of its traditional electoral coalition, the working-class.

A bit of superficial flag-waving – reinforced by urgent memos from party HQ – isn’t going to fix that. We have to recognise that the patriotism of these voters runs much deeper than that. They are more alert to rebranding exercises than spin doctors give them credit for. Their patriotism is about historic pride in their places, the heritage and stories of those places, and the Britishness and Englishness of the people and families that call them home.

There is a school of thought (and I can see why) that Marxists know this to be true do realligned.
I.e. That is why the goalposts are now moved to divide us all along every single line of "identity" they can dream up.

A society where everyone gets along is no use to marxists, it will simply die without the hate. Marxism lives on hate.
A society where everyone believes they are in whatever imagined group being oppresed by another group is Marxism page 1.
Sound familiar?

Macarony my post was nothing to do with thatcher OR any sort of working class struggle, better or for worse.
My point was, due to changes in society that sort of "struggle" is hard to promote or dying so the academic marxists have now tried to move the "struggle" on.

So univerities are now full of airheads who 100 years ago would be filled with ideas of the worker power struggle, now it's Identity politics power struggles.

It's the same things, different labels.

Tories are pragmatic, it is as simple as that. Not driven by dogmatic ideology. New labour and Blair, whatever you think of them, won elections and managed to roll out their plans as they were pragmatic. For example JRM doesn't believe in gay marriage personally, however he appreciates that is no longer the mainstream view, it won't change, and doesn't try to change people into his way of thinking. Many of them don't believe in a generous state, but their new coalition does, so we now have a very generous state. I feel it is far too generous myself, but it's not the mainstream view. I can see why they have taken that approach. It's about time we saw some of the new Tories from 2019 in government.
