Around two-and-a-half million coins celebrating the contributions ethnic minority communities have made to the UK will enter circulation on Monday.

The coins will feature the words "Diversity built Britain", along with a geodome representing connection and strength.

The Treasury says that the new coins show the intent of the Royal Mint and Chancellor Rishi Sunak to feature a wider range of people on coins and notes in the future

The coin was commissioned by Mr Sunak after discussions with the We Too Built Britain campaign, which supports fair representation of the contributions of ethnic minority communities.

He said: "I have seen first-hand the contribution made by ethnic minority communities to Britain's history.

"This coin, and the rest of the series, will act as a fitting tribute to the very profound impact ethnic minority communities have made on Britain, and I am grateful to the Royal Mint for turning this around at record speed."

Embarrassing and risible that they feel the need to try so hard.

If I was 2nd or 3rd gen born to English parents in India, Africa or Asia, I’d keep my head down, respect the native people, their history, culture and traditions. I would certainly not disgrace myself by demanding they bend to my twisted and dishonest way of thinking.
Report Richie_Burnett October 19, 2020 12:17 PM BST
I haven't read about it but I think it's an interesting metaphor. 50p is 50p and people are people, no matter what their heritage.

@Adamprice

The Westminster Government has shown utter contempt for Wales, our people and our democracy.  The time to ask is over. Now is the time to act.

By “our people” am I to presume that you are a proponent of nativism? Do you see the Welsh as a distinct group who should be celebrated and preserved?
Report Richie_Burnett October 19, 2020 12:29 PM BST
It's not an emotional difference, lux. No "us and them" - it's about equality.

We don't get our fair share under Barnett so we're basically oppressed, even after you asset stripped us and left us to rot. The solutions, to my mind, are to either reform FPTP or to leave the uk and join the EU.
Report lux October 19, 2020 12:38 PM BST
You're avoiding the meat of my question and making the usual conflation. Whilst that might be true of an elite it's certainly not true of ordinary English people. The two are distinct.

Report Richie_Burnett October 19, 2020 1:19 PM BST
People of every country share ethnicity, heritage and culture. It's non-binary in so much that there are various overlaps with other countries but the similarities get less and less, the further away you go.

Report PorcupineorPineapple October 19, 2020 1:57 PM BST
Yep, there is no such thing as a "shared national ethnicity. You no more share genes with a Geordie or a Cockney as you do with a Dane.

“our people and our democracy".  An acknowledgement of difference, of belonging to a distinct group that is worth preserving and celebrating.

“The problem is that a country is a man-made invention that causes untold problems”.

The two positions are opposed. Your second statement is a disavowal of the first.
Report Richie_Burnett October 19, 2020 2:01 PM BST
No it isn't. One is based on logic and the other based on current reality.

Then there was the the French scandanavians

The first British monarch  to speak English by choice after 1066 was Henry 4 around 1400 and probably only learnt it because he wasn't supposed to be king.

Edward 1 didn't even bother speaking English. Neither did Henry 4's granddad

"Our people" live in a partly devolved country that has been, and continues to be, exploited. If central government policy (ineptitude) is helping to overwhelm our democratically elected and underfunded health system then we have a right to be incensed.
