Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson has survived a move to oust him by abolishing his post.

The proposal was heard at the party's National Executive Committee on Friday but failed to get the two-thirds majority needed.

It is understood that it was proposed by Jon Lansman, founder of Labour grassroots group Momentum.

A fresh move will be made on Saturday at the party's conference and is expected to be successful.

Momentum was set up to support Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party.

Mr Watson has been at odds with Mr Corbyn over Labour's stance on Brexit.

He wants another public vote on the UK's membership of the EU before any general election, but Mr Corbyn has said an election should come first.

The party leader has refused to say which side he might back in a future Brexit referendum under a Labour government.

A Momentum source told the BBC: "We just can't afford to go into an election with a deputy leader set on wrecking Labour's chances.

"Labour members overwhelmingly want a deputy leadership election, but our outdated rulebook won't let it happen."

The NEC will vote again on abolishing Mr Watson's post at the party's annual conference at 10:00 BST on Saturday.
Sources told BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg they expected the vote to be passed.

There will then be a vote on the conference floor in the afternoon, where it is expected the bid to be approved, ousting Mr Watson.

BBC political reporter Jessica Parker said Mr Watson's supporters were "not overly optimistic" that he will win that Saturday's vote.

Corbyn/Milne purging remainer dissent, butting up against 70% of Labour voters.

I expect Corbyn to lose his own seat at the next GE.

While they are at it perhaps they can deselect all the MPs who don't want weasel as Leader.

That should leave him with a little gang of about 40.

What a joke he is. The Party is regressing in the Polls and he has managed to achieve the lowest approval rating of any leader since figures began. Despite all that he is still trying to make matters worse.

The 'civil war' is being waged by Watson et al - the fight back is WELL overdue. The article is bereft of context. F..k Watson and his ilk.

Yes, everyone is.
That’s the reality Labour is pretending away (we’ll just sit it out) and costing them millions of votes. Don’t take any refuge in the idea that Brexit will be forgotten next time Labour go to the country; this is only just beginning.

You need to get out more fella. Socialism is the future; even if people like you and the diff fella make it longer before we get there with your entrenched position. That is what I take comfort from not refuge. I live in hope of what will come, not in the fear the extreme leave/remain fixated zealots.

A motion to remove Tom Watson as Deputy leader was launched with a bid to abolish the post of deputy leader.
Jon Lansman, founder of the pro-Corbyn campaign group Momentum, tabled a last-minute motion at the party’s ruling national executive committee (NEC) on Friday night, calling for Watson’s job to be scrapped.

“We just can’t afford to go into an election with a deputy leader set on wrecking Labour’s chances.”

A Momentum source said: “No one person is more important than beating Boris Johnson, ending austerity and tackling the climate emergency.

“Labour members overwhelmingly want a deputy leadership election, but our outdated rulebook won’t let it happen. You need 20% of Labour MPs to trigger an election, and they just won’t let the members have a fair and open election.”

Chair Wendy Nichols ruled the motion out of order. Members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) voted 17-10 to rule it back in, but it needed a two-thirds majority.

Now it is on the agenda for a crucial NEC meeting at 10am tomorrow – and will need only a simple 50% majority to pass.

If it passes, it would then be sent to the floor of this weekend’s annual conference in Brighton for a final vote.

The move sets up a dramatic showdown and could see Tom Watson dislodged from power within days after four years of on-and-off battles with parts of the left.

Neither Tom Watson nor Jeremy Corbyn were at tonight’s NEC – meaning they both face an electric meeting tomorrow in Brighton that will decide the deputy’s future.

Watson as become very unpopular with the grassroots membership. Watson is seen to be a divisive figure who works to undermine the leadership while attacking anyone and everyone on the Left.

He as been depicted as Witchfinder general referring to his self appointed role in the ongoing anti semitism controversy surrounding the Labour Party.

Cummings must be laughing his head off polling 21% and now this chaos, sometimes i think this is done on purpose almost as though labour have conceded this election and purging for the next, that's my theory anyway?Next week will see the BBC  at labour conference,it will be potrayed as total chaos infact you may see chaos and it's even starting to look like 1983 never mind the following loss which will be mirrored..
