Birmingham Edgbaston goes to labour after 3 hours
Report Max and Paddy May 7, 2010 5:12 AM BST
For the Tories not to win Edgbaston is a massive smack in the face for Cameron.

For Blears to retain her seat shows just how thick Mancs are. They don't deserve the vote.
Report Guybrush Threepwood May 7, 2010 5:13 AM BST
7 hours of politics has caught up with me. Off to bed. Expect Gordon to be still smiling though. Hung election, we'll be doing this all over again in a few months.
Report Birchola May 7, 2010 5:14 AM BST
Amazed that Edgbaston isn't Tory.  It's one of Brums richest boroughs.

initial exit poll looking remarkably accurate - spread been to high all night - 300 could even be tight
Report Max and Paddy May 7, 2010 5:16 AM BST
Birch - the most amazing thing is that the Tories are so incompetent.

Of course, maybe if Thatcher hadn't destroyed massive parts of the north of England, they'd be home and dry by now.

We have long memories...
Report viva el presidente! May 7, 2010 5:16 AM BST
some of it's rich, birchola. but loads of students, some grim tower blocks, and iirc part of balsall heath chucked in.
Report Birchola May 7, 2010 5:20 AM BST
That's definitely the case M & P.  My parents are still smarting from the 80's boom and bust under the Tories and will always be staunch Labour because of it.

Viva el presidente, that about sums up most of Birmingham.  A suave five bed detached house next to a 20 storey tower block.

Respect to the Lib Dems in this one, was never going to be an easy ride and I think at least its going to lead to some voting change

Slowest 1.01 train i've been on but we've arrived Cool
Report V4 Vendetta May 7, 2010 5:32 AM BST
Just got up to watch.  First impressions:  Cameron has blown it.  Brown hasn't "won" in any sense, but Labour has done a lot better than expected in the right places.  Labour has taken Hammersmith as I write which was a target for the Tories with the black working-class candidate.

It seems that Labour did well to scare people away from Lib Dems - their vote is poor compared to the polls.  People went into the booths trying to keep the Tories out I think - and may have succeeded.  Gaaawd knows what government will come out of this - I think it will be difficult.

Tories didn't get Westminster North either.  Ouch.
Report Ghostdog May 7, 2010 5:33 AM BST
Murdoch's Obamaron front page did well. Grin

Retire Rupert, you senile old cnut.
Report granny binley May 7, 2010 5:33 AM BST
Oh my god!!!! Labour most seats hit 1.31!!! Why didn't I stay up and trade out!!!

Grr expensive nights sleep!
Report V4 Vendetta May 7, 2010 5:33 AM BST
It's not "Hammersmith and Fulham" by the way, just "Hammersmith".  Fulham is now in with Chelsea in "Chelsea and Fulham" which will be about 20,000 majority for Greg Hands (Con).  Chelsea was ripped from "Kensington and Chelsea" which is not just "Kensington" - my constituency - presumably Rifkind has walked it.
Report Don No1 May 7, 2010 5:35 AM BST
Labour have done well indeed based on expectations, just amusing seeing their reactions as if they thought they'd do much better
Report Max and Paddy May 7, 2010 5:35 AM BST
I don't care what it's called, Cockney. The Tories still couldn't win it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Report granny binley May 7, 2010 5:39 AM BST
Lol what I think is amusing is the fact that so far 11 odd million have voted for a left of centre party and 8 million have voted for a right of centre party!

Also Labour has 1 million more votes than the Lib Dems, these 1 million votes winning them 5x more seats, or 150 in real money!

It aint right!

Report V4 Vendetta May 7, 2010 5:43 AM BST
I agree Max. There's something a bit wrong with your geography if you think I'm a cockney, but you're right about them not winning.  Hammersmith is the smelly half of H&F borough, so it was always going to have a good Labour turnout, but it should have been winable against the worst PM in history.
Report granny binley May 7, 2010 5:45 AM BST
God think of the result if Labour had had the moral conviction to actually devolve Scotland, rather than the mixed mess we have at the moment.

Scotland:

Labour:    41
0
Liberal Democrat: 9
0
Scottish National Party: 6
0
Conservative: 1
0
