I can't believe there's still talk of stamp duty cuts after a housing bubble nearly wiped everything out. It's not that I support the tax because I don't but spending has to be cut swingeingly first.

Don't count any chickens just yet - the detail is all in the printed version of the budget which can be very different to the headlines we have just heard.

Remember Bottler's last budget when he sat down to cheering backbenchers as he finished with a cut in the basic rate of income tax.

Only later did they find out that this had been funded by doubling the starter rate of tax from 10% to 20% which hit 5 million of the poorest. Later the backbenches rebelled when they realised how many votes this would have cost.

Wait for the detail.

True about the 10 to 20% tax pangloss, and it was one of the worst decisions ever made IMO.
This time they have actually drawn a line in the sand, the tories can no longer hide and must now show where they stand on these issues.

Reminded me of Camerons speech at the party conference which earned Brown his "bottler" reputation for cancelling the planned election.

Cant see the 5% stamp duty on million pound houses being enough to fund the 250k exemption,wonder how that has been costed. They must be relying on the conservatives having done their sums as the 250k offer was stolen from them. We hall probably se an icnrease in civil servants having to police this measure as most buyers under 250k will claim they are first time buyers,living in rented after selling ?
