The amount of compensation the family will receive has not been disclosed.
It said in the best interests of the family, there would be no further statements about the settlement.

In the interests of the family, don't make me laugh. You mean in the interest of the metropolitan police.

It's in everyone's interest except the family's I think. The amount for an unintended death is usually less than £10k, so they probably coughed up 30 if they promise to shut up.
Report Dr J November 23, 2009 4:47 PM GMT
If the police don't compensate for a c*ck-up like this, when would they ever compensate?

It's no substitute for a public enquiry and a criminal prosecution, but it's better than nothing, I suppose.
Report flatliner November 23, 2009 5:12 PM GMT
I tnink the result of a public enquiry would decided if there is grounds for criminal prosecution....I could be wrong lol

Pay them out, then fine the family £15k.

That's what it would have cost to deport him if he survived, as according to the papers he was an illegal immigrant.

Does anyone know what the going rate is for compensation when the Brazilian police kill young men?
Report blackburn1 November 24, 2009 7:18 AM GMT
What exactly is this compensation for? I understand if a husband is killed at work and compo is paid to provide for his family but I just dont get this, however unfortunate it was.

What are they going to do with the money - throw a party to celebrate him dying?
Report noddys ryde November 24, 2009 7:42 AM GMT
They did not get compo from the police.
They got it from taxpayers,UK debt holders or the printing press.
Report Dr J November 24, 2009 9:32 AM GMT
It's right that we British taxpayers should compensate the family. It's our stinking police force that executed him for 'looking Asian'.

Accordiing to initial reports he was an overstayer, which made him an illegal immigrant.
Report DonWarro November 24, 2009 11:59 AM GMT
compensation should come from the police, who are a private for-profit business.

and fact compensation should be paid via the police's insurance - the officer that shot him must have a bond in order to be able to work as a copper, and said bond should have been liquidated to pay the insurance, obviously with the copper then not being able to work again, cos he will never get rebonded. such is life. try asking questions before you shoot people you t1t.
Report Toop Toop November 24, 2009 12:04 PM GMT
At the time of his death he was legally in the UK. Those claiming he was here illegally are either lying or they are misinformed.
Report Dr J November 24, 2009 12:04 PM GMT
I'd have no issue with compensation being paid from individual police officer's pension pots in extreme cases like this.

Likewise, if a University Lecturer awaded a 2ii to a student entitled to a 2i, why shouldn't the loss of earnings claim be met by her/his retirement funds?
Report DonWarro November 24, 2009 12:10 PM GMT
coppers have a bond for this very reason!

although maybe they did liquidate it - perhaps it didnt cover how much compensation they had to pay..

Blame the papers, they print this stuff.
Report Toop Toop November 24, 2009 1:08 PM GMT
You are quite correct, BC - they couldn't wait to print that garbage. Still, those that did looked stupied when Jack Straw put the record straight.

Legal or illegal, I fail to see the point of the assertion by the usual numpties that there's some relevance to being shot for doing nothing wrong.

Maybe Big Charlie will see what I mean if he gets a bullet in the back of the head for p1ssing against a tree on his way back from picking up his benefits cheque.
Report Knight Rider November 25, 2009 7:36 AM GMT
Not sure I see how cash helps the grieving process? Obviously any costs should be covered (e.g. flights to/from the UK after the death, loss of earnings etc) but an outright payment as a "sorry" just seems wrong (in all cases not just this one).

If I lost one of my kids I don't think I'd feel great about jetting off to Barbados or installing a swimming pool with my compo money.

My Incapacity Benefit is paid directly into the bank so I don't have to queue with the great unwashed at the post office.

Not on here every day I'm afraid, what with the job, the social life etc.

I don't hate old people you dipstick. I just don't understand why, if everything was so cheap in the old days, where the money all went. Obviously, earnings were also less, so the sepia-tinted nonsense they insist (most of them anyway) we should believe is...er....nonsense.
