A blatant example of torys looking after their own

Of course there is a caveat to IHT tax lampy, to say Cameron is giving money to his pals is stretching it a bit.

Once more labour/Mirror aims for its client base using the lowest common denominator

A Tory spokesman said: "It's rich for Labour to complain about our proposals. We believe only millionaires should pay inheritance tax. What the Government has to explain is - if cutting inheritance tax is such a bad idea, why have they done it last year and this year?"

"We believe only millionaires should pay inheritance tax. "

Not far off socialists themselves if they believe that.

Inheritance Tax is profoundly immoral and should be completely abolished.

You have a sauce, Lamby - but no source.

I remind you again, it's not "giving it away" as it's theirs to start with.

I'm afraid this is the art of politics......this is why Brown is Prime Minister. He understands politics better than the moajority of MP's at Westminster.

Regards IHT itself. All tax is a negative regards incentive for working. Anyone who has built a pot of cash in their lifetime should be allowed to pass the full bifta on to whom ever they won't when they pass away....no tax.

We are now in a technology age whereby we can generally ascertain whether someones wealth is based on their efforts or that of great great uncle Charles. I would have less sympathy for tax incurred on that sort of wealth.

We believe only millionaires should pay inheritance tax.

Excellent news.Presumably they plan to catch those Earls, Dukes and Lords who have handed it on tax free for centuries.
Instead of ignoring them and punishing those who actually earned it themselves.
Report V4 Vendetta November 25, 2009 9:27 AM GMT
True LUFC. It should be possible to have an accumulated total of PAYE etc from tax returns and allow people to pass on everything up to that total (plus presumably houses etc?) In theory that should placate the lefties given their stated objections, but I suspect not.
Report Mister E November 25, 2009 9:39 AM GMT
A good principle goring but I suspect that those who have land tied up in centuries old Family trusts have mitigated their PAYE in means beyond those of us who have actually earned it.

Always an election time favourite, similarly Jack Straw was talking Electoral reform at the weekend. The other Labour regular; reform of the Lords; should get an airing in the New Year.

Transparent attempts to kid the "Core support" that they are still basically on the side of the underdog. Some still believe it.

I think you have to be dead before IHT is applied - not a lot of benefit there tbh.
Report Dr J November 25, 2009 11:17 AM GMT
IHT is deeply anti-meritocratic.

Any real right-winger (cf. Socialist Banker) would hate it with a passion.

David Cameron's closest Tory chums will make £7.1MILLION from his plans to slash inheritance tax for the super-rich.

18 millionaire members of the shadow cabinet will save up to £520,000 each under the Conservatives' flagship policy.

Among those benefiting from the controversial plans to raise the tax threshold to £2million are shadow chancellor George Osborne, foreign secretary William Hague and Mr Cameron.

Angry trade union leaders last night said it was a blatant example of the Tories looking after their own. Unite general secretary Derek Simpson said: "They want to feather their nests but make hard-
working families work longer and for less."

which fails to mention the millions of Britains also removed from this absurd tax.

Simpson preaching about feathering nests is a bit rich......he is living in his union paid for luxury house for life (including his wifes life)
Report evski November 25, 2009 5:01 PM GMT
IVor, there are not millions of britain paying this "absurd"tax. Only something like 3% of estates payed it at 250k, so how many will be paying it at 1million? very few imo.

Don't forget the October 2007 response from NuLab to Osborne's IHT threshold rise - the headline was:-

'Labour steals Tories' thunder by doubling inheritance tax' - which referred to Darling's high speed repsonse doubling the IHT threshold to £600k.

Also, don't forget Darling's much questioned claim that NuLab had been doing to do this anyway and that it was NuLab, not the Tories, who were in favour of lower death duties. Darling tried to accuse Osborne of nicking his idea.

Consistent???
Report noddys ryde November 25, 2009 5:58 PM GMT
Woy Jenkins once said the only people who pay IHT are those who hate their successors more than they hate the state.

There are many laws/planning approval/contracts awarded etc. which may look like the law makers are helping out their chums but changing the Inherantance Tax Limits is low down the list.

To benifit you have to die. Which tends to have a detremental effect on your ability to earn money and get promoted. To suggest this law is designed to help Cameron's cloest friends is a bit silly.
It is worth remembering how much these people would pay in tax (on their deaths) under this proposed system.

As mentioned this is an area where both Labour and the tories would like to see a raising of the tax threshold. Not really a vote winner (or loser) and definitely not a front page newspaper story.
