David Curry, the Conservative MP who is head of the committee responsible for policing Commons expenses, has resigned his position before the start of a formal inquiry into his own claims.
He is standing down as chairman of the Parliamentary Standards and Privileges Committee after reports that he has claimed almost £30,000 for a second home that he rarely stays in.
Mr Currys claims followed the temporary break-up of his marriage in 2004. Later that year, after moving back into the family home in Essex, he designated a cottage near Masham, a town in his North Yorkshire constituency of Skipton and Ripon, as his second home. Since then he has claimed £28,078.
One of his neighbours, however, said:

Surely, the 'you couldn't make it up' supremo has to be the noble 'Lord' Martin who abused the expenses system himself, spent over £100k on legal fees trying to block MPs' expenses whilst Speaker - in which capacity he was responsible for setting and maintaining standards in the Commons!
Naturally, he received Bottler's full backing throughout. Well until the 11th hour and 59th minute when Bottler learnt that Martin was about to face and lose a confidence vote. At this point, naturally Bottler withdrew his support.
When the individual responsible for setting and policing MPs' standards is himself up to his neck in sleaze and enjoys the backing of the PM, it is hardly surprising that many MPs' follow his example.
Remember 'whiter than white'. Thought not!

Remarkably, NuLab have reminded us of their commitment to being 'whiter than white'.
Andrew Dismore, NuLab MP and member of same committee, has been caught relieving the taxpayer of £65k in questionable expenses claims. Sir Alistair Graham, former chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life (who Bliar refused to reappoint) has called on Dismore to quit.
Typically, the NuLab luvvie demonstrates his manifesto commitment to the redistribution of wealth - his dodgy expense claims are more than twice those of the Tory!!
