Does this tell us anything we didn't already know?

To be honest my handwriting is pretty poor, but my spelling is good. Does Gordon's bad eyesight really excuse poor spelling.

Can't see it myself. :p

Maybe the letter he was writing was just of no importance to him.

Are you referring to Gordon Sloppy Bottler Brown?
Report blackburn1 November 9, 2009 1:58 PM GMT
The poor man is virtually blind but this is just another example of his uselessness.

He could easily dictate a nice letter and sign it, instead he shows again how inept a person he is.
Report 4thjulykid November 9, 2009 2:14 PM GMT
Or maybe the mother was trying to profit from her sons' death by selling her story to the Sun , rather than complaining directly to no 10 .
Report evski November 9, 2009 2:14 PM GMT
I don't see the big deal, so what if he made a few spelling mistakes? It's an accident. I think this money-grabbing swine saw an opportunity to make some cash out of her sons death and took it. Call the sun and make a few bob.

I rarely defend brown but there was no malice or insult intended here. A lot more effort went in to this than just signing a generic note of condolence. The letter was meant to show gratitude and compassion and I think to say it is an insult to the dead soldier is an act of deceit. Alll this lettr illustrates is that GB takes the effort to personally write a letter to the family of all those killed in action, and that he isn't the worlds best speller.
Report blackburn1 November 9, 2009 2:16 PM GMT
Its perception though evski, further indication that he can do nothing right
Report V4 Vendetta November 9, 2009 2:35 PM GMT
While I despise the man and his policies, I thought this was rubbish. They showed the letter and I don't agree that most of them are mistakes at all - just his handwriting. The idean that he spells "comfort" as "cumfort" is ludicrous. It looks like he used a felt tip in a hurry and didn't complete the circle. The same goes for where he supposedly wrote "you" instead of "your": There's clearly a pipe going up at the end that is a script "r" in many handwriting styles. Having said all that, he's still a cünt.
Report sibaroni November 9, 2009 2:36 PM GMT
Agreed. An unpleasant and useless individual, but that he goes tot he trouble to hand write these letters is to his credit.
Report sibaroni November 9, 2009 2:38 PM GMT
In fact, thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Mandelson didn't have a hand in this. "How do we get credit for Gordon hand writing all these letters without being seen to cash in on people's grief?"
Report Tallywagger. November 9, 2009 2:42 PM GMT
Saw the mum of the soldier on TV this morning crying her eyes out. Didn't seem right to me.

She's lost her son ffs. Do a few spelling mistake's really matter?
Report Dr Crippen November 9, 2009 3:10 PM GMT
I agree with Evski,

I don't think a decent person would not have allowed the papers to print such a letter.

only prime minster ever to right such a letter, hope the money grabbing** of a mother who found time while grieving for her son to contact the sun feels about a foot tall today, wonder who she would have contacted before the sun switched to the tories

Incorrect I believe. Thatcher and Blair certainly wrote handwritten letters of condolence to the famlies of those, whose sons and daughters, paid the ultimate price.

Have to say this is a total joke. The fact he took the time to write a personal letter is a credit to him. The fact he made a few spelling mistakes is neither here nor there. The woman who went to the papers is a joke. Have to say dont really like brown but hes not in the wrong on this one.

I think the point everyone on this post seems to be missing is that he got his name wrong! not once but twice, once in the letter and once during PM'S question time.
Report madsimon November 9, 2009 5:45 PM GMT
yes churchill -tbh if i were in that poor mothers position i would be upset if my sons name was spelt wrong. Some people on here have no class about them if they criticise the mother for complaining -you can certianly criticise both Brown and the sun here but not the mother
Report Fenway November 9, 2009 5:50 PM GMT
He is a complete buffoon, but also a busy man with poor handwriting. Surely one of the overpaid civil servants could have proof read his letters and asked him to rewrite the ones that had errors, especially where he got the names wrong.

Poor stuff from the Sun and the deceased soldier's mother.
Report 1st time poster November 9, 2009 5:51 PM GMT
was it not the mother who told the sun, how can you blame them she would probably have phoned the mirror and told them the sun ignored her if they didnt print it
Report Churchill November 9, 2009 5:59 PM GMT
The mother is obviously annoyed because Brown got her son's name wrong . The paper picked up the spelling errors.
Report ribber November 9, 2009 6:17 PM GMT
Has anyone in the media had the guts to ask if this woman has been paid by the Sun? If not, fair enough; If she has, a depressing spectacle. Max Clifford fodder imo.
Report johnizere November 9, 2009 7:19 PM GMT
As much as I despise GB, this has been taken way beyond decency. He surely was told the lad's name was James, not Janes, (or does he know the names of every serving soldier?) and did his bit by writing a letter of condolence.
Judging by the standard of spelling on these forums, GB is not alone.

At least it was better than this...

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

from 'When the tigers broke free'
Roger Waters.

He cant win. If sends a letter looking to official and cold he would get stick.

Laughable to think Broiwn 'cares' in cases like this, its all show. Chris Mullin wrote about the carefully crafted letters he got from Brown when he joined the cabinet and one when he left. His comment was to the effect that he didnt think he even knew who he was and was puzzled to receive a letter at all ! He assumed it was to garner support for his bid to be PM.
