An armed robber who speared a policeman with a 2ft-long crowbar has been let out of prison on day release after serving just two years in jail, it been revealed. Mark Connolly, 25, was jailed for eight years for stabbing PC Pete Doherty after he attempted to arrest him during a raid on a newsagents.
Connolly admitted burglary and inflicting grievous bodily harm on the rookie PC, now 37, and was jailed the following March (07). He was also given a four-year driving ban after admitting being carried in a stolen getaway car after the raid in Bedworth, Warwickshire. But on Friday Connolly turned up at Warwick Crown Court, where he was originally sentenced, to apply to have his driving licence returned.
The crowbar entered PC Doherty's left side in an area not protected by his stab vest, penetrating his abdominal cavity. The officer was left fighting for his life and was only fit enough to return to work with Warwickshire Police eight months after the August 2006 attack.
Well seems a bit light then, but I think 5 is the max for GBH (s. 20 OAPA) so a 50% off isn't unusual these days, so it's bad for everyone.
