20,000 votes and that is a third of the electorate! That seems a very small constituency. Are people leaving Glasgow in their droves?

But it is still a good result for Labour, they are not totally dead yet.
Report ambi November 13, 2009 8:10 AM GMT
Pretty disappointing result for the SNP. though have to admit the candidate was not ideal, didn't really pass the 'is our muppet better than the other muppets' test. Takes a lot to break that indian reservation mentality, paleface bring heap big benefit cheque.
One ray of light is the lack of movement for the BNP; a constituency with highest unemployment in Scotland, highest proportion of asylum seekers, previous incumbent resigned because he was up to his nuts in the expenses scandal and they couldn't keep their deposit. Another appearance on QT by Griffin might finish them off for good.
Report noddys ryde November 13, 2009 8:20 AM GMT
So under 20% of those eligible to vote went for the Liars golden trough.
A ringing endorsement.
Report Dr Crippen November 13, 2009 9:11 AM GMT
High levels of immigrants is the root cause of Labours unpopularity these days, and they havent a got a problem with it up there, except for some asylum seekers that theyve had dumped on them..

They certainly dont like Tories or the Lib Dems, and neither do I.

An area where nobody can read or write, nobody has a job or two parents, everybody is an alcoholic drug addict with a life expectancy of 34......

Yet they vote (well 33% of them who could be bothered) to maintain the status quo.

A ringing endorsement of Labour's clientele and the desperate state of Scotland, a match made in heaven. The sooner England is shot of both of them the better.

A fan of Dave? You should read what I post bentley, I've said I'm going to vote for him once just to rid us of Brown then its UKIP for me.

And incidentally bentley, thanks for your concern but I'm not here to do anybody favours, merely to point out that the only people that will still vote for labour are those described in my original post.

I notice that your much dreamed of left wing party did well by the way.

Nearly a third of working age constituents in Glasgow North East are on benefits according to the Department for Work and Pensions.

The rate of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance is the highest in Scotland at 7.2% of the workforce.

'Socially deprived'

About 9,000 people - one sixth of potential workers - are claiming incapacity benefit or severe disablement allowance, the second highest rate in the UK after Liverpool Riverside.

According to John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow North East is "one of the most socially deprived, if not the most socially deprived, parts of Scotland".

The Red Road flats became "landmarks of deprivation"
In the 2001 census, nearly half of people in Glasgow Springburn said they did not have any educational qualifications - the fourth highest figure in the UK - and almost two thirds said they had no car - second only to neighbouring Shettleston.

About 45% said they had a "limiting long-term illness" and the constituency remains among the worst in Scotland for smoking and crime.

OK I exaggerated a bit, but we're getting the message about the type of person that appeals to Labour and vice versa

Lower unemployment in Scotland than England and a dozen constiuencies in England with higher unemployment than Glasgow North East, so not much room for parochial complacency.

Its a completely insignificant result, Brown can stockpile votes in these constituencies until the end of time but I'll still be catapulting him over Hadrian's wall come next May.
