Mr Johnson said that this years MoD bonuses, worth more than £47 million, were justified because some civilian staff from the ministry go

I've got an image of hundreds of blokes in bowler hats and briefcases charging the taliban.

And some see Johnson as a future PM

It's a total disgrace. £47million paid as "bonuses" to civil servants ffs. They don't even do their job properly. For years, the MOD has wasted billions on poor procurement and a total lack of any control as to how our money is spent. If these desk jockeys were any good at the job, our troops would not be short of equipment.

As a reminder (courtesy of the Telegraph) here's what £47m would buy:
293,750 pairs of combat boots
47,000 sets of body armour
26,111 SA80 A2 assault rifles
24,736 pairs of night vision goggles
156 Ridgback armoured vehicles

Let's see Bumbling Bob spin that lot away.
Report Dr Crippen November 12, 2009 10:53 AM GMT
Why didnt he just say thats how the MOD operates with taxpayers' money?
And theyll continue to get overpaid for drinking tea like they always have.

Report La Parata November 12, 2009 10:55 AM GMT
Is that why the MOD was looking at the same time to trim the TA budget by £20m/
Report Dr Crippen November 12, 2009 11:02 AM GMT
What is it theyve done, that would not have got done, if they had not paid them the bonusses?

Do they get wages to pretend to do their jobs, and then get bonusse on top if they actually do some work?
Report Tallywagger. November 12, 2009 11:24 AM GMT
You could have bought a lot of equipment for £47 million.

Unfortunately, you could buy a lot of votes with it too :(

this report was leaked by liam fox, so even if this money was stripped from staff and used to pay for equipment, its another 47 mill the torys cant save in there driving down costs,so for short political gain this time next year fox may find he,s the latest casualty with a bullet hole in his foot

Nice one 1st time, blaming Liam Fox for all this

Why not sack 25,000 of the 50,000 MOD staff and use the money saved to buy helicoptors?
Report Tallywagger. November 13, 2009 8:27 AM GMT
How many votes in that , noddys ?
Report tangsoodo November 13, 2009 8:32 AM GMT
id vote for that
Report noddys ryde November 13, 2009 10:01 AM GMT
tally- let me see-protecting our soldiers fighting a futile war v protecting pubic sector scroungers. Suspect the electorate may just choose the former....not that they would ever be allowed such a vote.
Report 1st time poster November 13, 2009 12:17 PM GMT
always nice to hear people who think the world cant go on without there job and how underpaid they are,and everyone elses job is not needed, easy, overpaid etc,of course till they need the people who do sed jobs
Report noddys ryde November 13, 2009 2:52 PM GMT
ist-loads of people could do my job I'm sure-no one is indispensible. the stats say that our proportion of civil servents to front line soldiers is disproportionate thats all.
No other country can match our 2 soldiers - 1 civil servent ratio- so we are top of one global league table anyway!
If we get rid of jhalf our pen pushers many countries would still be ahead of us.
Or perhaps the 25,000 could be redeployed to the front line- Darling like?
