The time has come to get a hud, but which one?

I am mainly playing 6 max cash at the moment, but would probably play a few sngs if there were any double stack ones available.  I am currently playing at i poker, but will be trying all the others when I get better, hopefully, for their bonus schemes.  I have almost given up playing on betfair due to no waiting lists, no player search, no buddy list and no 6 max.

Also is their any other software that could help my game?

TIA

get holdem manager. The latest version includes a hud. Put them all in the same colour (Change your poker background to black and use white text). I use vpip (voluntary put in pot), preflop raise, preflop 3bet, aggression factor. If you put your cursor on it u get more info but you dont want too much info on the screen or it becomes confusing.

Never forget sample size. They might have a crazy high aggression factor over 55 hands but are just hitting cards and are usually a rock!

Tracking software will only help if you learn how to use it properly. The link is a bit out of date but it should give you a general idea, theres plenty of other stuff on 2+2 if you search.

Thank you, jamesbeckton.  I have just looked at their site.  Is it possible to buy a book on holdem manager?  I know they do a manual on the site but I much prefer a book I can read, as I usually do my reading outside when the weather is nice and it stops me spending too much time on the computer.

Thank you, garybet.  I have just looked at that article and it was very helpful.  I have not visited 2+2 for a while as I have only been playing a year and most of what it said I did not understand!  However, I seem to understand more now so I will look at the other articles.

You could always print Annie [smiley:crazy]
It's best not to try to take all of the info in at once, it will only confuse matters. When I first got holdem manager I started to lose loads because I was playing the ''stats'' rather than the tables.
I'd start off just using VPIP, PFR, 3bet and aggression factor. As you get to use the program more add in extra factors. I use a HUD with about 15 indicators (different ones for cash, sng and mtt), that I change every so often (it automatically alters your style of play when you take a different set of factors into account) which is good if you play against a lot of regs that are used to your normal style.

Thanks, creidhne.

I have a soft spot for you as you are  one of only a few I remember playing against  in the old betfair's sngs.  I seem to remember you always raising my blind, your hud must have told you I was a passive player at that time.  I have since learned to be otherwise!  However I prefer cash nowadays - since betfair moved to ongame and there are no more 2000 stack sngs  Sad
Report jamesbeckton. October 10, 2010 2:11 PM BST
huds r only really any use in cash. In sngs and mtts the sample size and situations are too specific
Report Creidhne October 10, 2010 7:20 PM BST
I disagree james, the broad range stats are useful in mtt's and sng's.
Report Creidhne October 10, 2010 7:21 PM BST
....it depends how you set them up and what you read into them.

I would advise Holdem manager too, set your Hud to show just a couple of stats to start with and add a couple at a time as u get more confident. start with hands total, VpIP, and a couple of aggression stats. I have about 10 stats now, but did have about 15 at 1 time but I have reduced them down. Also as said earlier in the thread I don't take too much notice of them till I have 500 hands and even that is a small sample size. I currently have over 500k hands in my data base and 46,000 players lol
Report J3w3ll3r October 11, 2010 10:25 PM BST
oh and all but 50k hands are STTs
Report Creidhne October 11, 2010 10:53 PM BST
Totally forgot about number of hands, very important stat !!!!

Thank you j3w3ll3r.

I seem to recall you were another one I played with who stole my blinds regularly  Sad  I must have been a sitting duck with all those of you with holdem manager to show you how passive I was, if you had not noticed it during play  Happy

I'm a bit fick, can someone tell me what a HUD is please
Report Creidhne October 12, 2010 2:16 PM BST
heads up display, it shows your opponents playing style. Think of them as numerical notes.

Hi Annie, what was your BF screen name?
Report annie. October 12, 2010 3:55 PM BST
I'd rather not say, j3w3ll3r, because I have had abuse on here and on chit chat and do not want it while I am playing poker as well  Sad
Report J3w3ll3r October 12, 2010 4:17 PM BST
Oh, ok TBF I have seen some of it, if you need any help with the HUD just ask me im always on BF, im happy to give u my email address and help where I can

Thank you, j3w3ll3r, that is very kind of you  Happy  I think I will need lots of help  Sad

First thing, is unless u play high stakes only get the Low stakes version which i think is $55

Thanks, j3w3ll3r ( can i call you something else Confused )

I forgot to check the spec needed for the software and my ancient computer does not cut it  Sad  It was a gift from a friend when my usual computer gave up the ghost.  I am going to buy a new computer but do not know whether I will need a laptop, if I go travelling, or a desktop if I stay in great britain.  So I cannot buy one until I make up my mind what I am going to do when the sale of my flat goes through, hopefully  Happy
Report Creidhne October 13, 2010 6:58 PM BST
Just buy a laptop, unless you want a high spec games machine (your not a spotty teenage geek so don't bother) thats all you need. Its got the benefit that you can play poker wherever you want.
Report annie. October 13, 2010 7:07 PM BST
The trouble is creidhne, is that I prefer desktops.

I have had two laptops, but prefer this ancient desktop that I have now.  I cannot decide where I am going to live until I exchange contracts, then if I am going travelling soon I will buy a laptop, but if I decide to stay in great britain and go travelling next year I will buy a desktop.

Decisions, decisions  Sad

You can call me what ever you like, I answer to all sorts but mainly Stephen lol

i have both but tend to use the Laptop far more as watch TV whilst playing poker unless im playing 4 tables or make it deep in a decent MTT (which is very rare lol)
Report jamesbeckton. October 14, 2010 12:03 AM BST
I use a laptop for mtts a lot as can be more relaxed using it but for cash I use the desktop as my laptop doesnt have holdem manager on it and i need a hud for cash.

Annie have a look at Pokersitandgoreport.com by Marty Smith.
Never used HUD display myself but the videos by Marty showing possible use were great information and actually fun.
Good info in this thread. I like my own notes. What I am actually missing though is the basic counting info on my own hands on a table that the old betfair offered, and other sites, but missing here.
So I may have to go for a low stakes Holdem Manager / HUD option myself.

And Annie as for deciding where to live and selling flat the lap top is just easier to carry round.

BTW having divorced 2 years ago and got a settlement of losing half my pension, maintenance for my youngest one (now 16) and only a quarter of the proceeds when the house was sold I have finally got that large 25%.

Got 6 months to make a decision to buy again (my age) or rent somewhere (could do so tomorrow), though my boss reckons I ought to take a couple of weeks break and go to Vegas. So any advice on that would be gratefully received.
Report akabula October 14, 2010 12:52 AM BST
You and Annie seem like a match made in heaven. If you both decided to go to Vegas theres plenty of little chapels to get married in. Would solve one of Annie's problems as well - laptop or desktop - simple you buy one and Annie buys the other. Better be quick of the mark m8 as Annie got loads of suitors on here.

All the Chapel bells were ringing.....Love

I've spoken to Betafair poker staff a couple of times because I've had a lot of trouble with this new software crashing when I try to play 4 or more tables. The last advice I was given was to upgrade Adobe flash player and directx which has helped on the desktop but not on the laptop - which, even tho 17inch would be hard to play more than 4 at once anyway, although I did play up to 7 on it on the old Betfair.

This new software is akin to needing a nuclear reactor to heat a four bedroom house.

What gets me is, people are constantly asking for advice on laptops, desktops etc on here, but there is nowhere where the betfair poker team have said well, if you want to multitable 6 tables you're going to need this desktop and this size screen etc.

Get this month over and I will have a bit of time on my hands for 4 months and 1 month I would like to have a serious go at winning the mtt leaderboard - try & wrestle it from them pesky poles.
For month I would like to multitable 4-6 tables, 8-10 hours, probably from 6pm (when 3k turbo starts to maybe 2am-4am) everyday - but I need to have everything working ok.
I have a 22inch monitor - fine for up to 6 - but do I need a new desktop or can I take it to say PC World and they can upgrade it to meet the new software requirements?

Thanks nick for the website by marty smith, it looks interesting.  I have had a quick look but will look again when I have more time.

You seem to have the same problem as me, where to live.  Like you I could buy but now seems a good time in my life to go around the world because at last I do not have any ties.  I have looked on the net and could live in america for what it costs in england, and could live much, much more cheaply in thailand or somewhere like that.  Or, maybe get a job in Gibraltar or Malta.

Decisions, decisions  Sad

Actually the bit about thailand was suggested by someone at the same gym as my brother.

He is 68 and has just gone back to thailand to marry a 'waitress' who is met over there a few weeks ago.  She is about 35.  He says she is not a prostitute but a friend of his says a fellow 'waitress' asked him whether he wanted to 'go upstairs' with her.  She might be totally genuine but you do tend to think of the saying ' there is no fool like an old fool'  Happy

Anyway this man said that you can get a hotel room for £10 a night and it got me thinking.  Some research led  me to hotels charging just £7.00 a night for a room bigger than my living room with flat screen cable tv, high speed internet and all mod cons.  I have also had good reports on thailand from various people.
Report Mavis "Hacksaw" Handbag October 14, 2010 11:08 PM BST
is the current software really so laggy that u can play an absolute max of 6 tables before everything crashes, even if u have an amazing pc?

also, re HUDs. Just be careful u dont turn into a stat freak like loads of the breakeven grinders I play against every day.

Keep making notes too, and I would advise u to play one session in 5 without using your HUD to keep yourself thinking about poker and the current situation based on what you have seen and notice, instead of just a load of what can often be meaningless stats (because you need an absolute ton of hands to get anywhere near a good sample size)
Report Creidhne October 15, 2010 3:23 PM BST
Totally agree Mavis, HUDS are good for seeing the ''extreme'' players (either super tight or super loose aggressive), all other stats should be read with some caution. You should definitely make notes in addition to HUDS as well.
Report annie. October 15, 2010 5:13 PM BST
Although making notes on betfair is a nightmare  Sad Another of the reasons I rarely play on here now.
Report Creidhne October 16, 2010 10:17 AM BST
Holdemanager has an inbuilt notes system annie, much easier to access than Betfair one.
Report annie. October 16, 2010 12:47 PM BST
Thanks, creidhne, I wondered why other players were not complaining about the useless note system of betfair 2  Plain
Report Creidhne October 16, 2010 12:50 PM BST
Loads of people complained about the poor notes system when the move to Ongame happened. In short it is unusable on shorthanded tables and often the notes you have written don't even show.
