Friend of mine runs snooker club in coventry.

Wants to start poker night once a week.. sent out text to all members and there is about 40-50 people interested.(prob more once it takes off or all their mates want to come too

He hasnt clue about how to sort out blinds, structure, should it be a rebuy or not and whether it should be dealers or self dealt..(will pay for dealers if needed which I said wouldn't be a bad idea since some of the lads/ladies may be quite unsure on the rules and wouldn't be adverse to starting trouble.(if dealers are needed then rebuy prob better )

They would Prob be looking to start at 8.00pm and have it finished for 12.00/12.30 if possible.

I remember there is some on-line poker manager that may help will send him that but its really the advice on how to run the night that we are looking for. What to do and what not to do or allow.

Its in Coventry so have quite a few casinos near where we can get the dealers from.

cheers again..sheriff

structure of the games isnt really an issue as they are quite easy to sort out, but you need to check the legality of it first especially if you are advertising the game and there are local casino`s who may complain

the snooker club is members only and there is approx 4000 on the books...

he is prob looking at 10 pound buy in..(does he charge a extra 1 or 2 to go towards dealers?)

if its rebuy would it be 10 pound rebuys for first hour or so..?

thanks again
Report Mandylou April 21, 2010 1:02 PM BST
what you are suggesting there is illegal
Report Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane April 21, 2010 1:52 PM BST
Just trying to clarify things then..

It is a members club and they have a gaming permit since they have fruit machines in there(assuming its not a seperate one required for poker)

If he was to charges 10 pound with no fee, no rebuy would this be ok

Maximum payout looks like 250 according to the act (again assume that is to the winner)

is that legal if that was the structure..?
Report EverybodydsAwinner April 21, 2010 1:54 PM BST
exempt equal chance gaming s269

2) the amount that may be staked by a person on any game of poker must not exceed £10.

(3) the aggregate of the amounts that may be staked on games of poker in any one day must not exceed £250.

(4) The aggregate of the amounts that may be staked on games of poker in any period of seven days must not exceed £1,000.

Report Mandylou April 21, 2010 4:44 PM BST

Also on this, he is going to need to buy chip sets .... is it just ebay for these sets or is there a specialist website to get them from.

just need to be durable and useable so not too expensive..

Dont buy a chipset, buy single stacks of 25 *****
Chipsets have loads of *****you dont need and not enough of the ones you do.
*****come in packets of 25 for £1.50 per pack from http://www.gamble.co.uk/acatalog/Clay_Suit_*****html.

Cards - buy Kem or compak cards. More expensive but they will last 10 times longer than cheap **e.
You want "wide - super index" them are propper poker cards. If you dont choose that option you will get bridge size cards.

met him today to go thro things.

In the room they have overheard projector thingy in the ceiling to show footy games etc on big screen on wall..
gonna try and connect a lap top up to that with some type of software so every one can see what blinds are, how long lft etc etc

I assume if you need to finish by say 12.ooam then there is some software available where you can put in time of finish, how many are there at start and it will work out the blinds and breaks for you based on these.

Ive looked at stuff on ebay and gonna order them..

One other questions...

POKER TABLES

What should we do about these...

a) buy those fold away ones but think they look cheap and are quite flimsy.

b) They are getting the snooker tables recovered this week.. They have quite few lads who are decent chippys...

Thinkin about make table tops that are covered in the old snooker cloth that fit over the normal tables they have in there and can be taken off when not needed...

Lookin to start all this start of june so got time to sort out tables etc and planning...

Ive told him i think def need dealers since some lads gonna not know all rules and can see arguments starting..

any other general advice,..

thanks

I've run about 50 tourneys using The Tournament Director software.

http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/

It's very good and really does everything you need.

My one bit of advice would be have a very comprehensive set of house rules, detailing things such as your rules on burn cads and mis-deals.

Every player must be aware of them, and that it's a condition of playing that they agree to them.

that software looks superb...downloaded free trail..

they have 20 ft widescreen screen with overhead projector and we connected it up earlier to test drive it and all works fine..

On the software, we have couple of companies asking if they can sponser the event and have an advert flash up every now and again during the tournement..

Is it that banner set part of software and how do I insert their advert into the software..?

There are some poker tables on ebay for about 50 pound but not sure on the quality..

they are fold away ones so could be ideal but has anyone played on these types before..

cheers again..

Hi Sherriff

I run lots of comps down here in darkest Dorset

The J Alexander tables are fine mate...use quite a few of them...
One point though I don't let people use the drinks holders for drinks...sounds stupid but it is so easy for drinks to be spilt over cloth and the drink holders fill up with drink and condensation from the glasses

good luck

Really struggling with how many chips will I need, the blinds schedule and what starting stack should be..

Ive been told at min to have smallest chip as 25's and also that minimum for decent tourney is 50bb but better if 100bb.

Since I want this over in four hours if possible but want players to have fair bit of play was lookin at 80bb (4000) starting stack...

Round 1    20m    £25    £50    00:00    CHIP UP?
Round 2    20m    £50    £100    00:20
Round 3    20m    £100    £200    00:40
Break 1    10m            01:00    yes
Round 4    20m    £200    £400    01:10
Round 5    20m    £400    £800    01:30
Round 6    20m    £800    £1,600    01:50
Break 2    10m            02:10    yes
Round 7    20m    £1,600    £3,200    02:20
Round 8    20m    £3,000    £6,000    02:40
Round 9    20m    £5,000    £10,000    03:00

main worry s are, not sure how many players we are going to have... could be 50 or more once it gets going...

worried if it gets to the later blinds rounds, players having to use loads of 100's to make up blinds..

4000 stack for example, with 25/50 1st round blinds...

each player got 2x25's,1x50.4x100,3x500.2x1000 (4000) but only 12 chips which doesn't seem right..if i give them more 100's and say one less 500 later on i can see problems with loads of chips needed for the blinds...

What controls what is my question...

Is it the starting stacks and the denominations, is it the blinds structure or is it the number of players... or i suppose the real answer will be all three...

If i have 50 player tourny that i want finished in 4 hours, what stacks and blind schedule should i use, how many chips will i need to but and in what number for each chip eg how many 100's would i need...

my head hurts.. lol

That is fine mate...first break chip up the 25 & 50's as you dont need them anymore...2nd break chip up 100 & 500's..
I would do following...slight variation on yours
Round 1    20m    £25    £50    00:00
Round 2    20m    £50    £100    00:20
Round 3    20m    £100    £200    00:40
Break 1    10m            01:00    yes  chip up 25/50
Round 4    20m    £200    £400    01:10
Round 5    20m    £300    £600    01:30
Round 6    20m    £500    £1,000    01:50
Break 2    10m            02:10    yes   chip up 100/500
Round 7    20m    £1,000    £2,000    02:20
Round 8    20m    £2,000    £4,000    02:40
Round 9    20m    £4,000    £8,000    03:00
Round 10   20m    £8,000    £16,000   03:20
Round 11   20m    £16,000   £32,000   03.40
If you have 50 runners @ 4k each   200k in play wont get past level 11.  If you only have 40 runners give 5k each

btw   headaches go with the territory  [;)]
