12 mtt... usual crowd. 2 of my mates there. one came 4th. aaaaaaaanyway...

23 runners... down to about 17.... blinds are 10/20. i have 450. villain is chip leader with about 700

i am on the BB with A-K suited. villain in the cut-off raises to 50 - so 30 more...

it's folded to me... i re-raise to 230 - so 200 more. i have about 220 left in my stack which i make known.

he re-raises me all in. obv i can't fold and was actually hoping for q-q or below...

what did i see? A-9. wow.... lovely... but a 9 on the flop and i was gone.

now... i hope no-one will disagree with me in that this was an awful play by him.

the raise to 50 is fine. when i re-raise he has to know he is dominated by a bigger ace or a pair from 10-10 to A-A.

thing is... i was telling the story in the bar to some of the people who had already busted out and were playing a 5 sng. one of them piped up... "A-9? i would do that too." i replied "if you would do what he did then you're an idiot."

then i got a load of stick for saying that and then the guy continued to try and reason about the play. i left it in the end but did not apologise.

i said nothing to the guy who put the beat on me.but this guy arguing his case when i had told him the exact raising numbers etc really got to me...

now.... i know i should be happy that both of these players exist as in the long term i will profit from those situations etc.... but i can't help looking at the short term...

your thoughts...

dont even think about play ing in casinos with real players

real players lay down a-9 there. and it wasn't the beat.... it was the attempt at a debate afterwards...

fyi... i went to luton g-casino on sat. busted out of the 10 rebuy while 4 buy ins deep and getting nothign better than 10-10 once...... i had 20% of my friend tho and he chopped it for 440 so i made 40-ish profit overall from it.

in the 20 freezeout at 10pm... i finished 2nd for 140 and gave the same friend 20%.

after paying for food, petrol etc and donking 50 away at roullette while tilted i still walked out with 60 more than i went in with.

obv these stakes are small but that was all they offered.

A: How did you do out?
B: I had AK against A9 but he hit a 9
A: Unlucky
B: yeah nothing I could do

Then you go the bar and get smashed

I have only played live once but went out of my way to not to be unpleasant- it is a cheap pub tourny where people are boozed- this is the reason you played it! Unless I am on major tilt online, I try and be courteous and keep my comments to 'lucky hand' or 'grr, that's annoying'. After all, ultimately you want people to make these callls. When playing live use some common sense. You don't wanna get beaten up.

Report jamesbeckton. June 5, 2007 12:13 AM BST
There is a way of wording things. You were obviously disappointed you didn't do better and should've left the pub before you take it out on people. I'm not saying you deserved to get beaten up but you should put it in perspective- it was a 10 pub tourny.

It is a pub tourny. I presume everyone else in the pub cannot understand what the fuss is about. Maybe if you had siad casually that you thought it wasn't a great play, rather than that only an idiot would've done it, then he wouldn't have taken offence. These are casual players looking for a night out.

i admit that calling him an idiot was maybe over the top.....

but i did say 'if' he made that same move.... which i believe to be true.

where exactly am i wrong in this? apart from what i have already conceded about being a bit silly to call him an idiot.

you lot always do this... laugh to yourselves and 'lol' at each other and call me all sorts but don't actually put foward a decent reason as to why i am wrong.
Report DaVinch.co.uk June 5, 2007 12:24 AM BST
You're an idiot for trying to tell him the error of his ways, why not just agree and come back next week with a better idea of how the guy plays? If you are playing reguraly and take it as serious as you do why do you want to improve thier poker knowledge?? You could be the guy who always wins yet they don't know how you do it. If you keep winning they will start listening to your advice, become better players making it harder for you to win. The true sharks keep quiet unless helping a friend imo.
Report thebuilder86. June 5, 2007 12:25 AM BST
beckton - of course i understand that not everyone takes it so seriously... and that some people think incorrectly....

but if he was just having a fun night then why enter into a strategy debate? he was clearly a fool who thought it was a good play.

he brought it upon himself. i didn't ask for a discussion. i was asked how i went out.
Report jamesbeckton. June 5, 2007 12:27 AM BST

vinch - i know that educating your opponents is bad ev long term and will make the game tougher for you.

but when someone pipes up with the assertion that it was a good play then i will tell him why it was not.

i don't talk much strategy at the tables...... but when someone brings it up like this guy did then i will.

same with a guy earlier who hates me. he is an idiot who loves to show his bluffs when he wins 50 chip pots in the first level. like i care if my 3rd pair was in fact good. anyway... this guy lost most of his stack on a 8-9-j-j-x board with j-6. he went on to say how 3 jacks is a great hand etc. the opponent had 8-8 for the full house.

then when i told him how the big bet on the turn was a decent chance to lay it down he went off. i asked him what he was beating etc. a-9? his opponent wasn't gonna be betting so big there with that. q-q to a-a possibly but that didn't fit with the preflop betting. so his opponet had to have him beaten with either.........

7-10 or q-10 for the straight..
a-j, k-j, q-j etc for 3 jacks with a better kicker.
or 88/99 for the full house.
Report Mandylou June 5, 2007 12:33 AM BST
reasons why you are wrong

1 - the play wasnt the best agreed however , for him to realise that you arent folding atc here then you maybe give him more credit than he deserves
or he has an ace and is so inexperienced he thinks its good
either way he isnt in the wrong
2, if you expect or want more advanced play then dont go in tenner pub re buys
3, ultimatley you want the call
4, you are in a pub then decide to give out back handed insults and get into barneys - you neither have the physical presence nor the group of mates behind you to help if things turn nasty
5, you then decide to get involved in the barney on a forum because people tell you why you are in the wrong
no one really is disagreeing with his play are they ?
Report jamesbeckton. June 5, 2007 12:37 AM BST

fyi - i did have 2 mates with me - both who are harder than me.... but i never even consider the possibility of violence as it doesn't happen in my circles.

no-one is agreeing with the A-9 play and that obv reflects the demographic on this thread. we take our poker seriously and notice glaring errors.

but people are disagreeing over me calling him an idiot. i do sort of think it was overthe top.... but i also believe he was and if he agreed with the move then he was/is an idiot.

the move is the move of an idiot. correct. we all agree. to agree with the move makes the person agreeing an idiot. surely?

A while back, at a touney, against the odds, my partner got to the final table. I say that, only coz he's cr*p, and the fact that he made it had me rofl. He'd made one fantastic play, which if I hadn't witnessed I wouldn't have believed, but that apart it was all luck.

Anyway, at FT we're all crowding round watching, and he makes a weak raise, which is pounced on by CL. He ends up all in with nothing and is forced to show his cards and thereby his bad play. Standing next to me was a guy who immediately began to** him off. By chance, it was the guy he'd made the great play against earlier.

Well, I couldn't resist giving him the sharp side of my tongue extremely loudly, and told me him that my old man might be a cr*p player but only I had the right to call him that, and he'd forced him to lay down his ak with aj etc so he couldn't be that bad etc.

Obviously my old man heard every word, but did he thank me for sticking up for him?? No, he had the right hump with me the entire weekend for loudly telling all that's he's a cr*p player.

You were on BB giving it blah blah blah my hand is so good. I have gone allin at times like that and found the BB was BS ing

He would have still had *****available if he had lost, if he had won then he would have been an even bigger CL

You could have had 88 for all he knew, you could have had KQ soooted

Surely we can all make 'bad' moves when we know we are getting HUGE implied odds......if we win...we crush the table "Know It All"....and just you know it will make him so so angry and spoil his evening. This is worth at least treble the number of *****that are actually in the pot.

This is also one of the special situations, as identified by Sklansky, where the pot actually gets bigger as the evening progress.....ie still moaning at the bar 2 hours later = 1000 extra *****...still complaining and seeking public support 24 hours later = 5000 extra *****
