Well here we are - halfway. The second half however is tougher than the first. Today is two HCs, a cat 2 then a (rare) summit finish on a Cat 1.

Unless Moncoutie is having an 'on' day, I can't see past the first four being Froome, Evans, Wiggins and Nibali - probably in that order!

Perfect for Sky, this breakaway incapable of working together. This is between Wiggins, Froome, Nibali & VDB
Report razz July 12, 2012 3:42 PM BST
why's rollands price shortening for the stage?
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 3:43 PM BST
i have no idea why Rolland is shortening, unless he has LOADS left I dont see how he can stay out. These guys cant stay out.
Report lucylucky July 12, 2012 3:45 PM BST
because mugs pile in anyone thats over hyped and at the front (see laying valverde 4.5 with 140km to go)
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 3:49 PM BST
Nibali's going to attack on the descent here and Van den Broek's going to attack up La Toussoire, so Rolland is still a massive lay. Im maxed out, and if Rolland wins I'll need Wiggins top 3 to turn a profit.
Report Claret85 July 12, 2012 3:51 PM BST
Roland was v.impressive last year when Contador caught him, but he wa able to ride away and still win. The gap has gone from 2 mins to 3 mins, of course Rolland is gonna shorten.
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 3:53 PM BST
Its a similar stage to Alpe d'Huez as well, plus his directeur sportif said he was going to drop everyone today. But he's done so much work and the bunch behind have to move. Nibali attacks on the descent, Sky will ramp it up on the final climb and VDB will attack from there. They need a lot more than they've got imo.
Report federalski July 12, 2012 3:53 PM BST
Exactly, Skys easy pace has seen the chances of the leaders grow.
Report lucylucky July 12, 2012 3:53 PM BST
vs very tired riders on a short climb?
Report BlockingBug July 12, 2012 3:54 PM BST
All depends on Nibali. If he goes on the downhill the Sky train clicks into another gear. If he doesn't then they would be well served taking it easy.
Report federalski July 12, 2012 3:56 PM BST
Yes, difference between 2 minutes and 3 minutes could prove the difference.
Could not though...
Report Wessex July 12, 2012 3:59 PM BST
Rolland is a serious climber, much harder to take 3 minutes from him than from the normal breakaway merchants, all depends on whether Sky need to chase and I'm not sure who might cause them to do so, Evans is knackered, Nibali is probably discouraged after yesterday and VDB is too far back on the GC
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 4:00 PM BST
Are they all going to just look at each other til the final climb? Nibali's a sh1thouse.
Report razz July 12, 2012 4:02 PM BST
im betting on rolland and greening out if he gets to evens, price could well drop sharply soon
Report db1974 July 12, 2012 4:03 PM BST
According to Twitter, Nibali hasn't recce'd this descent so probably won't attack
Report federalski July 12, 2012 4:04 PM BST

Report Dope July 12, 2012 4:05 PM BST
I was hoping Chris Anker Sorensen got in the break so I could lay him in play... he got in the initial break but it was so strong his odds drifted from 25/1 to 40+/1!! He's still doing OK now but wont win.

If Rolland, Kiserlovski and Kiryienka have 3mins at the foot of the climb they have a good chance... but Rolland has just crashed!
Report razz July 12, 2012 4:08 PM BST
im in better shape bets wise after the fall tbh Grin
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 4:09 PM BST
Short climb LL? La Toussuire is an 18k climb averaging 6.1%. I still think the peloton are favourites once Sky wind it up.
Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 4:11 PM BST
Its 3 times as long as La Plance des Belles Filles, although at a shallower gradient.
Report db1974 July 12, 2012 4:12 PM BST
Why are Sky going to wind it up? They only need to keep Evans & Nibali from gaining any time, which they are doing. I can't see them being that bothered about the stage win.
Report Ozymandius July 12, 2012 4:14 PM BST
Exactly, no reson at all for Sky to wind it up as things stand
Report razz July 12, 2012 4:14 PM BST
you guys watching it online? theres so many adverts on itv 4..

Report marychain1 July 12, 2012 4:30 PM BST
Rolland might be sandbagging, wouldnt surprise me if one of the four went on a solo once the gap gets down to 1.30-2.00. Rolland likely candidate.

May be Marychain. Just a few times a couple of K's ago he lost his wheel by a length or so.

Backed Pinot - 3rd
Backed Wiggins top 3 - 6th
Backed VDB - 5th
Backed Schleck - nowhere
Backed Cobo - nowhere
Laid Rolland - won

managed to lay a few others at stupid short like Valverde and Kiserlovski but a horrible day of post hitting and a big loss for me. Worst loss of the tour so far.

Report ClayDavis July 12, 2012 5:16 PM BST
Froome knew exactly what he was doing when Wiggo dropped off the back - he was chancing his arm to see if they would let him go
Report BlockingBug July 12, 2012 5:16 PM BST
How much time Wiggins would have lost had Froome gone is a matter of conjecture. Would he have made 2mins? 3mins even given Wiggins is the better time trialist? It's not an open and shut case.

Wiggo would have done the same as Cadel and paced himself to limit losses. He spent a good few minutes riding at the front when Froome was struggling and wasn't exactly going backwards.
Report JustWinBaby July 12, 2012 5:17 PM BST
Froome would have won the stage if they had let him go at that point
Report spyker July 12, 2012 5:19 PM BST
Nonsense
Report ClayDavis July 12, 2012 5:20 PM BST
Froome wasn't struggling ffs....seeing as 30 secs later he was at the front destroying the rest of the field and kicking clear of wiggo.

I agree that Froome could have got Rolland today.
Report Sir Denis Eton-Hogg July 12, 2012 5:26 PM BST

Report HoD July 12, 2012 6:07 PM BST
Agreed ...Nibali's attack looked really impressive and killed Wiggins .... ooooo look, they finished with same time. I suspect Froome's would have finished the same way
Report History Maker July 12, 2012 6:42 PM BST
No way Froome would have won the stage. I suspect that he might not have been caught by Wiggins and Nibali though. Doubt he would have gained more than about 20 secs.
Report JustWinBaby July 13, 2012 3:27 AM BST
There was 4km to go at the point Froome accelerated. Did you all even watch the way he accelerated? It was a sharp acceleration where nobody was able to match, he would have run Rolland close.

People thinking Wiggins would have caught him Laugh He couldn't match him even after being paced up all the cat climbs yesterday by his team mates ffs
