In all the year of dominance the Pats NEVER hosted 3 AFC title games in a row. Next week the chiefs host their 4th in a row. This team is special.

It had to be kelce
That superbowl blow out last year hit kelce hard. |

Why is this stupid rule?
To minimize disruption to TV schedule? Whatever was due on after was not gonna get the same ratings |
By:
They should have a chance to score in a shootout

What a weekend

Nature of the sport makes OT difficult, unlike basketball. I used to think college had better OT rules but I don't think so - if you can't stop them going 75 yards into the endzone do you really deserve a shot with 4 downs every time?
|
By:
Think it's just a case of sticking with old rules.
There will be a big debate after this I would think. One of the greatest NFL games of all times and one team doesn't get the ball. In a match between two defensive teams the coin flip doesn't matter that much, but with teams like these it's huge. Maybe they can keep current rules for reg season, and do the college thing for the playoffs. It would still be a little unfair because the team winning the coinflip would still have an advantage (they can win the game with a FG after both team have scored TD's), but it wouldn't be as unfair. |
By:
The way it was going, after a full 15 minutes, the score would have been 64-64
|
By:
Just think 14 seconds. Mahomes and Reid u got 14 seconds
. That is just bonkers over 500 yards |
By:
Unfair for the team to score first though when the 2nd team gets 4 downs every time. As they say in the fight game, don't leave it in the hands of the judges.
|
By:
They modified from the original - where even a FG on the first possession was enough to win. So some acknowledgement of some sort its a bit unfair. But I think they are reticent because potential increase in tied matches, which they don't like.

Incredible weekend of games - possibly best playoff weekend I've ever seen..
not sure what the solution is re overtime...maybe play a full 10 minute OT followed by sudden death if still level but pass rush by that point would be bordering on non existent, not convinced the college rules are great but could maybe be looked at...certainly a shame to see a contest like that (KC/Buf) decided by the coin toss..though the rules are better than they were when even the FG on 1st possession won it for you.. |
By:
a mildly interesting article re college overtime that was revised relatively recently..

Both teams get 2 (regular season) or 3 (post season) offensive possessions each. Each offensive drive starts on own 25 yard line. You have two minutes to score a touchdown on the standard four down basis. There is no punting, no field goals, and a turnover on downs still results in the opposition starting their next drive on their own 25 yard line. Essentially it is a touchdown or bust penalty shootout of drives.
There is a mandatory time out with 30 seconds to go, the defense have one time out, the offense do not have a time out. The differential advantage of the potential one possession td walk off is gone. The advantage of the second team to possess having four downs knowing what is required is gone. On both teams the offense and defense get the opportunity to make a telling contribution to the final result. If a tie exists after those possessions you do ABBA counterbalanced batches of 4th and Goal from the 5 yard line. And if you want something else on top of that, both coaches bid for a game winning field goal opportunity with the longest distance bid being given the opportunity to kick for the win. If bids are tied both teams kick, and keep kicking on a counterbalanced basis from increasing distances until a winner emerges. |

The right solution guarantees an equal number of possessions and declares a winner based on who makes a stop. Several years ago, we proposed (and the Spring League and the XFL eventually adopted) a penalty-shot system with teams taking alternating cracks at two-point conversions, whether three or five before it goes one-for-one, back and forth until one team scores and the other doesn’t. (Under our formulation of the procedure, the offense and defense for each team would be on the field at opposite ends of the stadium at the same time, going back and forth with 40 seconds between attempts.) not the most ridiculous idea |

thankyou...tho truth be told if i had picked the opposing team in each selection i
would have been happy with my choices as it felt so close which turned out to be true. I think that was the best weekend of football ive witnessed in a long time. |
By:
Well done misselephantstone.
Agree about the picks - so close - BelperBlue on zero, could just as easily been at the top. |
By:
Thanks Mac and well done Misselephantstone. Had my best weekend ever punting on the NFL although as mentioned it could have been completly different! To cap off my luck I also bet on Fornette to get 51+ rushing yards in the rams/tampa game and he got to exactly 51 yards with Tampas last play off the game!

absolutely unbelievable,riveting w/end of football
hard to think that could ever be equalled again for drama GB choking as usual,9ers pretty fortunate really Rams choking like fk only to fall over the line if they don't jump out to leads could well struggle what a stud the Bengals young kicker is Josh Allen has really come on this season, how gutted must he be,played absolutely superbly and such a good rusher and quick given his size for me the Bills were slightly the better team, always looked like scoring on Offense KC rode their luck,Mahomes was brilliantly elusive and produced the required magic on demand and that is some 'O' line the polar opposite of their insipid 'D' i know all sports can produce drama and finishes but there is smth intrinsic that the NFL possesses that lends itself to unreal drama and denouements |
By:
all allen's doubters on the podcasts etc have finally stfu having gone broke martingaling against him for 4 years
too late now the ferrari is on the drive |
By:
Hope he doesn`t turn into the new Jim Kelly.
