A vet who has worked for more than a decade with Willie Mullins arrives at the BHA headquarters in London on Monday to fight charges that he passed on inside information over an injury to Faugheen shortly before the red-hot Champion Hurdle favourite was ruled out of the race two years ago.

Tim Brennan is bringing a high-powered legal team to clear his name over the incident that saw Faugheen drift alarmingly on betting exchanges in the face of lay bets ahead of the announcement he would miss the race.

One of Brennan's team is understood to be Edward Fitzgerald QC, who has represented high-profile clients including Myra Hindley, Jon Venables and Abu Hamza, and has pleaded cases before the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights and the Caribbean Court of Justice.

Fitzgerald will be addressing a panel headed by retired judge Philip Curl, with retired jockey Jodie Mogford and Simon Rowlands, who was chairman of the Horserace Bettors Forum at the time of the alleged offences.

Accused of laying bets

Brennan is charged with conspiring with his brother Michael to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice in relation to racing.

This, the BHA alleges, involved passing inside information obtained in his capacity as vet to Faugheen about the Champion Hurdle ante-post favourite to his brother, who was accused of then laying Faugheen in bets amounting to several thousand euros.

Brennan denies the charges and has called them a "convenient story".

Mullins vet charged with passing inside information about 2016 Faugheen injury

Michael Brennan has refused to cooperate with the BHA's investigation and was excluded from the sport in October 2016, meaning he is barred from entering racecourses or racing stables and licensed individuals are forbidden to associate with him.

Mullins is not involved in the case and there is no suggestion he or any other staff members at his Closutton yard were aware of Tim Brennan's alleged actions.

Outlining the BHA case, Philip Evans QC said Faugheen was the 1-3 favourite for the Champion Hurdle when Mullins announced the horse would not make the Cheltenham Festival in news made public by the Racing Post at 1.26pm on February 17.

Michael Brennan placed his first bet nearly 48 hours before the news broke at odds ranging from 1.49 to 1.98, which were "significantly better than the odds with the bookmakers".

Not talking about this individual case but the knowledge that the horse wasn't well would have been exploited by someone else in any case particulary once it became public,on a moral standing is there really much difference of track players taking "live" video players money once a horse has fallen? Not imo.

Pa you are correct. In fact it could be said that the laying of fallers is even more immoral

Thanks Arkle, the thing is no matter how "immoral", would it be fair that a company relies on it for profit and shareholders are in bed with it?
Surely the same criteria is applying,ie it isn't in the general publics knowledge.
