Has it started ?  Seems a bit early , usually around the third week in August . Used to be able to time it in tandem with the Tralee races , but thats long gone now .

Cork Rose will hack up in this I get the sense. My cousin was beaten in their qualifiers and it was said it was a foregone conclusion who would win. Thought she'd be shorter than 7/2 given this could be a right stitch up. Should be well schooled as well as she has appeared on GAA panels on RTE as well.
Report maxheadroom August 5, 2014 7:44 PM BST
hmm after doing some more research on the texan she should be nearer 300s, some of the runners photos seem to have been worked on. no photo uploaded of the cork entrant neil d unless its under the lists of brittish entries.

They don't want them too refined looking or 'up themselves', they're going to spend the year at agricultural & town shows so they have to play to their audience which means no short hair either.

Dia Dhuit, my name is Anna Geary and it is a huge honour to be chosen as the 2014 Cork Rose. I am 26 years young and grew up on a farm near the lovely village of Milford. I am a marketing professional at Dell Software and also a Dell Charity Champion. I hold a Business Degree from the University of Limerick and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Relations from Cork Institute of Technology.

I have a passion for sport and am privileged to be the current Cork Senior Camogie Captain. My involvement in sport has afforded me many opportunities including working with Make-A-Wish Foundation as a national ambassador and with RTÉ as a sports analyst. While living in Luxembourg, I discovered my love of travel and have since worked with the Higher Education Authority to promote studying/working abroad during university.

I am an advocate for greater use of the Irish language as we all know the cúpla focal as Gaeilge. I love fashion, food, dancing and enjoy the challenge of Bikram Yoga. I am proud to represent all of my fellow Cork Rose Finalists in Tralee and I look forward to every moment of this experience.

They picked an Italian winner there a few years ago with a legitimate modelling background, but she went mad on the talk backstage at an agricultural show near Athlone. This kind of thing needs a steady hand with plenty of resolution who is familiar with the terrain.

The Rose of Tralee is just that  ...ROT ...utter tripe that would score a perfect 10 on the Richter scale of
feeble-mindedness. It should have gone out with the era of gabardine coats , turn-up trousers, and pioneer pins.
A pukefest of epic proportions ,it's right up there with the Eurovision 'Song Contest'.

This Geary twit sums it up - loves GAA , Gaelic and charity. It's a wonder she didn't mention opening an orphanage in the Phoenix Park and a Palaestinian refuge on the Hill of Tara while she was at it.

Wouldn't have been betting at odds on myself , not having seen the field .

An acquaintance of mine who managed a bookies nearby got a phone call one evening from a mate who was somewhere in the world , not sure where . The phone call was to see how much he could get on a beauty contestant .  He managed about £400 on at odds from 6/1 down to 2/1 , at which stage betting was suspended , presumably due to the specific interest registering at head office .

Apparently his mate had got a phone call from one of the judges , tipping him the winner , which had still to be announced the next day .

She won  , and it was no tuppeny ha'penny event !

Its fashionable to sneer at the Rose Of Tralee ( Big Brother also ) but what harm does it do,its like some of he threads here not compulsory.

Don't think the winner being lesbian will damage it in the slightest on the contrary will be sold as proof of the modern Ireland, the way things are going it will shortly become compulsory.
Report paulie wallnuts August 24, 2014 11:48 PM BST
I suppose you could be right Dan.... All they have to do is change the chorus ever so slightly..... "She was lovely and quare"...
Report pa lapsy August 24, 2014 11:56 PM BST
Probably will be turned that way now but agree with Paulie,it would never have happened if it was known beforehand,my point(with others) was listening to the lighthearted, insufferable, innocent japes of the format of the show for nearly 20 minutes it is in conflict to what the"show" should be about, in fairness a gay rose is a bit of a damp squib.
Celebrity big brother is a total head wreck of a circus and could only fathom less than 10 minutes of that. As you say Wildman, thankfully not compulsory.
Report wildmanfromborneo August 25, 2014 12:04 AM BST
I think they knew she was a lesbian, that's why she won.

Its all part of a softening up process to make us accept this alternate lifestyle.

Why are newsreaders appearing on chat shows with their partners talking about how they met,why are radio presenters constantly promoting their weird lifestyle, its the new order and we better get used to it.
Report pa lapsy August 25, 2014 12:13 AM BST
I'm not sure, isn't it meant to be who is the rose of Ireland(and affiliated), and the show targeted at primarily in the eyes of men?,shure there is no point whatsoever in having a rose if she has no interest in men? Nice girl and all that but in regards the rose of Tralee not sure if it is correct,i mean really now it is up to the women of Ireland to judge is a good rose surely?
Report newapproach August 25, 2014 7:56 AM BST
In a time when job creation and economic growth seems to be the only thing on peoples mind, its surprising have such hatred towards the rose of tralee. It was set up in the 60's to create a buzz around town during bleak economic times. It still acts in this function today although was neglected and ignored during the celtic tiger. Surely ye won't begrudge our beautiful little town, which is unfairly given a bad name, a bit of badly needed time in the sun.

Why didn't she mention the fact she was a lesbian before she entered. The intolerent liberals have always tried to bring down this festival. Gerry Ryan did it years ago with the mother and child all those years ago. This is just another attempt to destroy it by the so called 'liberal elite' in this country.
Report Ozymandius August 25, 2014 8:55 AM BST

I will preface my views by stating that Derrick Mooney and Aengus Mac Grianna are as thought-provoking as the "Calling Norman" thread but perhaps naively  believe the newscaster's increased exposure is as much related to the fiscal constraints of the RTE budget than liberal propaganda from the state broadcaster. Newscasters such as Brian Dobson,Anne Doyle and Sharon ni Bheolain all seem to receive an unmerited level of media exposure for Z-list celebrities whether this is due to financial difficulties at Montrose,a deterioration in viewer's taste or a menacing advancement by the liberal elite is open to interpretation.

Wildman,I presume you commend the BAI's decision to censure Derrick Mooney (excruciatingly annoying btw) for telling a gay guest that he hoped they would one day be able to get married in Ireland. Is the reprehension of the clerisy (RTE) for not providing the alternative perspective more culpable than the imposition of extreme political correctness?
Report wildmanfromborneo August 25, 2014 10:10 AM BST
I don't actually commend them because I think that's taking things to extremes.

I accept people with my type of views have been comprehensively routed but not intent to rout us they want us all criminalised,no defence of our traditions is allowed, here is a fair example any post I have made in defence of the Catholic Church lasts around ten minutes, any post in defence of Israel lasts about twenty minutes any post not proclaiming the wonders of diversity three minutes.

What is ironic is that on this thread there are two posts that would be deemed homophobic by the new regime are posted by the most politically correct of them all.

Would you not agree that your own views lack balance?Have you ever criticised the Catholic Church for the burden they have put on the Irish exchequer despite their global property empire?

Have you ever criticised the tax loophole created for farmers to avoid paying a capital gains tax of €24 million this year, this received minimal media attention but cost the Irish exchequer a significant contribution which was legally owed. Their lobbying power has recently been elevated by the sympathetic and gullible George Lee who seems to believe that all segments of framing are nonviable.

Farming is flying at the moment,ye should all know that as there is not a murmur from them.

That tax loophole was wrong as are most tax loopholes.

I don't think the Catholic Church put any burden on the state, the opposite in fact.
Bertie Ahern decided to be the big guy again and lashed out money to a heap of undeserving chancers,no defence was given.
They scoured the world looking for claimants, enriched a load of rapacious legal people and then tried to make the Catholic Church pick up the tab.
Report dj876 August 25, 2014 10:54 AM BST
Geoerge Lee had two detailed reports on RTE News last week, one documenting the unprofitable and unsustainable yields of the tillage industry and another where the powerful lobbyists were chaining themselves to Tesco trolleys over beef prices. Great to hear the industry is flying and it's just the usual poor mouth from the lobbyists.

Amazing that you still defend the Catholic church who raped the exchequer in 2002 with their deal with Michael Woods to compensate for  continuous and ubiquitous physical and sexual abuse throughout their cult.As far as I am aware they still have a liability to the Irish exchequer for in excess of €300 million.

We are not going to agree on the Catholic Church but they were not allowed defend themselves, you think they are liable which is fair enough but the Government took it upon themselves to do what governments do best lash out money but then tried to pass the bill onto someone else.

The government caved in under media pressure, they never lead they just followed the baying mob clamouring for revenge and money.
