Report claimingseven August 8, 2011 1:21 PM BST
In 2002 Norris told the current affairs magazine Magill: "I haven't the slightest interest in children, or in people who are considerably younger than me.

"I cannot understand how anybody could find children of either sex in the slightest bit attractive sexually ... but in terms of classic paedophilia, as practised by the Greeks, for example, where it is an older man introducing a younger man to adult life, there can be something said for it. Now, again, this is not something that appeals to me.

"Although, when I was younger, I would have greatly relished the prospect of an older, attractive, mature man taking me under his wing, lovingly introducing me to sexual realities, treating me with affection, teaching me about life."

Here is what he said Workrider. Surely we can all relate to the last paragraph in that when we were younger there was a sexy milf we knew who we wanted to show us how it was done Blush

I understand what you are saying claimingseven, my take on it is that someone very close to him did something very wrong and it has put him in a very difficult position. The whole thing is unfortunate, the comments in relation to Gay Mitchell are interesting. I don't have a particularly have a strong oppinion on this matter as the ceremonial positions wouldn't hold a great deal of interest for me.

I quite like Norris as a character however, and there are a few things I am certain of in relation to him. Firstly, he is a great orator and has a powerful  intellect, but secondly, he is an activist, who speaks extremely frankly and some of what he says can often be construed as morally ambigious with regard to sexuality, as the passage you highlighted there could claimingseven, by someone who has a dislike of him maybe. I'm not sure these qualities make him suitable for a position like the Presidency in its current form.

In short, I think he is well able to make a rod for his own back, but is intrinsically a good man in my oppinion.

Wildman and workrider, my own father is a man in his fifties and he would hold oppinions on this topic similar enough to the two ye. I think it is a generational thing in some ways, whereby, if you stand by and defend a person who has done wrong, you are condoning the act.

You cant blame environment for everything though neill. For all the rubbishing of David Norris and his lifestyle, he at least came out with his hands up and took responsibility for his actions.
Report neill d August 8, 2011 4:26 PM BST
I've no problem whatsoever with David Norris, but i can understand why others of a particular generation perceive him the way they do.

I wouldn't give him much credit for coming out now and taking reponsibility, as I doubt he had much choice, but equally i wouldn't hold this whole affair against him either. Objectively though, one would have to say that he has been somewhat calculating as he knew that if this ever got out, he would have had no chance of becoming President, therefore he neglected to mention it and you'd think that it is implied that full and frank disclosure off all skeletons in the closet would be a prerequisite for a position such as the Presidency. It is a kind of good faith thing I suppose. I'm not saying all politicans are whiter than white, but a would be presidential candidate is supposed to be of another calibre again.

I'd say this was definitely leaked by someone with a vested interest in the outcome, because I reckon a normal scribe would sit on it and only let it out when it would cause maximum damage, that would be when he was in, or close to being in, the Aras. Take away the controversy and his charm would have taken him bloody close, imagine if it came out when he was in office.

Away on a tangent there i know, but I thought it was interesting. Again, I'd say, a good man, but not whiter than white.

Very interesting piece Tony, on the level of public policy, it would have shown us internationally as a progressive country to have David Norris as President, I'm sure it would have helped some people here in Ireland as well who feel marginalised.

That is all gone now and it is going to be very difficult for David Norris to come back from this, I think he will though as he is 'good television, is likeable and has character. His career as a mainstream politician has been shot to pieces though.

I don't know who I would have voted for, but in terms of our national reputation, had none of this come to light, he would have been good for the country in terms of how we are perceived worldwide.

unfair of some posters to suggest that dislike for david norris is homophobic. i used to think norris was perfect for president, and the fact that he was gay didnt make me think he was any more suited for the job! (ie i dont care whether or not countries think were living in the 1980s or 2030s based on who we elect president) however since the allegations came out in the papers regarding a whole spectrum of his views and morals, and his pathetic attempt to justify himself and his views, i think he should permanently step down from politics. i also think its ironic that he was portrayed as being decades ahead of society by being openly gay etc etc but that his consideration of the wellbeing of children etc is almost non existent and has many similarities with the catholic church in the 60s and 70s. i wouldnt vote for him if he related to me, i think hes got a twisted mind and i cant help but feel karma has kicked him in the arse

i was never a fan of his, not because im a homophobe (i realise that probably doesnt help) but because hes hardly been overly constructive in contributing politically has he. being a senator is a glorified version of being on the dole, the differences are that you have to dress up going to the senate and you collect a good few quid more.

Interesting point you made there revedesivola.

I did a little research. Here's a constructive contribution that Senator Norris made.

Ireland as you know is a constitutional democracy. In 1977, Senator David Norris initiated a case to decriminalise homosexuality. At the time, the statutes criminalised homosexual relationships between men. In 1980, David failed in the High Court, in 1983 he failed again in the Supreme Court by a 3:2 judgment which found that the laws did not contravene the Constitution, having regard to the Christian nature of the State, the immorality of the deliberate practice of homosexuality, the damage that such practices cause to the health of citizens and the potential harm to the institution of marriage. Senator Norris, with the assistance of Mary Robinson, his senior counsel at the time, then took the case to the European Court of Human Rights and won in 1988 with a judgment that Irish laws contravened Article 8 of the Convention on Human rights (the right to respect for private and family life). It took five years – largely through the campaigning of the Irish Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (a national ngo organisation) – to get the laws changed to decriminalise homosexual behaviour in 1993.

It seems he did the State some service.
