Tiger Woods: Runaway winner of the last 2 Opens held here in 2000 and 2005 but has had his injury/personal problems since then- he is obviously not happy with his game and is changing his putter for this week A poor performance to overcome lto when finshing +4 and Tied for 46th in the At+T National, a tournament which he won last year on a different course Has finished Tied 4th in both the US Open and Masters and if anyone can come back from a poor performance its Tiger but at 7.6 currently on here is not for me but come Sunday evening it could look a very big price indeed
Rory McIlroy: Put in a stunning final round performance to win the Quail Hollow Championship in stunning fashion with a 62 in the final round in May- Started the season well on the Europeantour with a 3rd and a T6 in his 1st 2 tournaments but bar his win has been a rather disappointing season so far for him form wise as he seems to be lacking consistency with 5 missed cuts including the Masters and US Open but put in a good final round again wen T4th in the French open last week- likes the course though, read last week that he has never shot over 69 anytime he has played it(no stats to back that up though) a definite contender but at 18? Too short imo He will no doubt win a few majors imo but has a lot to prove yet
Phil Mickelson: Winner of the Masters and Tied 4th in the US Open this year, T60th, T11th, T40th on his 3 visits to the Open at St Andrews- doesnt have the best record in this though and bar a 3rd in 2004 and 11th in 2000 has been well down the field on al other occasions
Ernie Els: 3rd in the US Open and T18th in the Masters - Been in great form this year with 2 wins and 3 top5 finishes on the PGA Tour- Has a great record in this event, with no less than 12 Top 10 finishes, including one win, 3 seconds and 2 thirds- a leading contender here once again
Lee Westwood: 2nd in the Masters, T 16th in the US Open- has nt looked the most confident when in contention but did win the St Jude Classic in June beating Robert Karlsson in a ply off, Karlsson missing a short putt to win it. A poor final round has cost him a few times but he has been very consistent overall with 5 top 10 finishes on the PGA tour and 3 on the europeantour, 3rd last year and 4th in 2004 in this, doesnt have the best form at St Andrews in this, 96th, 64th and 81st on his 3 appearences
Reteif Goosen: Poor showings in both The US Open and Masters - has 5 top 10 finishes on the PGa TOur this year and one on the europeantour. 7 top 10 finishes in this including a 4th here at St Andrews in 2005, could be a lively contender
Padraig Harrington: 4 top 10s on the PGA tour this year but poor showings at the 2 majors so far, missed the cut at the Masters and was T22 at the Us Open, 2 times Open winner in 07 and 08 with top 5 finishes in 05 and 97 Finished 20th in the only Open he played at St Andrews, if he can cut out that one bad round that seems to be constantly poppin up lately he could have a big say again
Justin Rose: The form golfer in the World at the moment with 2 wins in his last 3 tournaments and threw away a winning position in the other(wen i was on!!!) with a 75 in the last round, been playing some excellent stuff and putting has looked very good, 4th as an amateur in 1998, 12th in 2007 and 13th last year, could be worth a bet for 1st round leader
Graeme McDowell: US Open and Wales Open winner this year with 3 other top 10 finishes as well 11th here in 2005 when he played excellently in the final round shooting a 67- if in the same form as his Us Open win should be there abouts
Others of interest:
Ian Poulter: Started the season well Winning the Accenture Matchplay and was 2nd in the Abu Dhabi- being disappointing since but was T10th in the Masters. Missed the cut last year but was 2nd in 2008 and 11th here in 2005
Vijay Singh:Has sown a revival in form lately with 3 top 15 finishes in his last 4 tournaments- was 2nd in this in 2003 and has played in the open 4 times at St Andrews 1990 - T12 1995 - T6 2000 - T11 2005 - T5
Gregory Havret: 19th in 2008, he was 2nd in the US Open just beaten by 1 shot, overpriced
Tom Watson: Deserves a mention after last years near miss- 5 times Open Champion, massive performances in the Masters and Us Open wen finishing T18th and 29th
Woods is at a price now that you have to something on him. He had so much in hand here before. At 5/2 you would obviously say no thanks but at 7/1 and growing he is now too big.
Great write up BJG and good luck to you for thr week

just a few then
samll saver on Phil @ 19.5 (i'd probably throw myself off the pier if he won it and i had nothing on)
Tiger Woods 18/1 first round leader, he is out early when the conditions are supposed to be best (rain but very little wind) and in 2005 he led pillar to post (looks way too big a price)

price hunting; Garcia, Monty(reckon he'll trade lower than the 530, laird and overton
backed schwartzel top South African and had to back Jimenez for the missus despite the fact i reckon he has no chance but dont fancy laying a 160-1 chance myself, wait and see he'll fecking win it
Have to say Garcia is too big at 100/1- yes i know his form has been rank rotten but the Open is a funny old tournament and he has great form over the years. He needs a big tournament badly

Rory and Tiger scores look fantastic now with that wind getting up.
Be interesting to see how Rory handles the lead, seems the type to have bottle but hes never been in a major lead position so it remains to be seen really. Sunday is different to Friday though I'd say he'll be grand tomorrow. Westy -5 now too, but sure we know what happens on Sunday there.

I know, but McIlroy is surely due an average round at St. Andrews sometime and with the wind blowing and the increased pressure and attention from starting so well, I'm banking on it being today. I'm sure he'd settle for a 69/70/71 today anyway.

Rory is doing exactly what he normally does when he is in a winning position. Its not the first time he will have spurned a good opportunity, the tournament he won in America was one where he came from the clouds and posted a miracle score. If ever Rory leads a big tournament on the final day, they will want to bring a few new pants and underpants for him.
