Best golf of his career as I said earlier in the post. Four top tens in a row and basically three holes have cost him at least one title if not more. In the Barclays a poor second round cost him. Needs to put the demons to bed and secure this one.
Report vinnie_roe September 10, 2009 10:31 PM BST
murf - pod could win the Fedex without winning a tourney this year. If he can have a strong finish this week he could end up 3rd in the Fedex rankings. The points are reset. He finishes 2nd in the tour championship, and neither stricker or woods wins..... 10million bonus for pod.

Poor round again after going into the lead. It appears that he doesn't mind chasing at the moment but once he is righ in the mix then he blows up a bit. To be fair, if Woods plays like he has done today then Harrington doesn't have much chance anyway.

Still, on course for this FIFTH CONSECUTIVE TOP FIVE. Brilliant really

Padraig is taking 8 weeks off after the Chevron Challenge event in California . If I were him I would fly my wife and children out there for a couple of weeks pre Christmas .

Could win this event , only 17 to beat , plenty of trouble on course , and padraig is a survivor . At moment , after round one he is marginal favourite , although Westwood gave up a tremendous position and could pop back any time .

Course suits McDowell too , out with the washing early , fought back well . He played very well in China last week . 2 out of 18 is not bad , Rory would have been there too but for the Nedbank .

Report Murphinator1 March 20, 2010 12:18 AM GMT
Nice to see this thread back!

Seriously though Harrington simply has to improve his 4th round form. I'm counting around 5 tournaments since the Bridgestone last year where he has appeared to be moving into a winning position and then collapsing with consecutive horrible holes. There was a tournament at the back end of last year which finished on a Monday (anyone remember?) where he basically drove into the trees three times in a row when he was cruising on the final day. Nevermind Bridgestone and the Masters calamity.

Last week was more of the same.

Hoepfully he can get over this.
Report Blessington March 20, 2010 1:08 AM GMT
Murph....I thinks its now just a case of Harrington going all out for a WIN instead of playing safe picking up the place money and the world ranking points that goes with them.

Now on the last day he chases down leaders with high risk shots known the reward will be a win and faliure will be a disaster.

When you consider the Worlds greatest golfer EVER does be in those fields you can blame him deciding that if he is to come out a winner he will have to hope lady luck saves him when it comes to his badly excuted shot like it often has for Tiger.

I can only admire the guy for taking on these style shots rather than the present American style of play where the guys in contention are now laying up on the par 5 for their 2nd shots instead of taking on the lakes......

So I say good luck to him and I'm sure its only a matter of time before thay pay off again........Cheers
Report BJG March 21, 2010 12:19 PM GMT
Another bad round yesterday wen leading, 4 behind now!
Report Allez March 21, 2010 12:24 PM GMT
Bless, so you are saying that Harrington is playing a style that is less than optimal for winning tournaments?
Report Blessington March 21, 2010 12:41 PM GMT
ALLEZ....No I'm saying when Harrington gets in contention now he goes on ATTACK mode. Since he knows he can't wait for Tiger to make mistakes a style which Westwood has tried in the last 2 tournaments the 2 went head to head.

Unfortunely Attack is always high risk and if it comes off your the hero and when it fails more times than not you can look silly.

But it is the only was they will ever beat a in form Tiger.

As for this week its beens mainly used by golfers who think they need to practice a few things and up their game for the Masters.

At the end of the day who did you ever hear saying he's also a winner of the Transistion which has one of the lowest winning prizes on the MAIN tour.

So to sum up I think its all about chasing GLORY for Harrington now and thats really only going to be achived by him now in the Major our the World Series events and inbetween will just go down as a bonus imo.....Cheers

PS.....Says he who backed both Furyk and Goosen this week at 33/1. :)
Report Allez March 21, 2010 1:57 PM GMT
Attack mode is in no way optimal to win high-quality golf tournaments on a Sunday.

It's a war of attrition, nothing else. These attack mode comments just cover up that when he hits the front he pulls himself up faster than Harchibald.
Report Blessington March 21, 2010 2:42 PM GMT
ALLEZ...Its hard enough to beat a Worlds No 1 in any sport but when your playing against the Greatest ever in that sport in Woods its hard to expect to win unless you take the risk oftrying to pull off those all or nothing shots......

Which is all truth is more entertaining to watch than the present bunch of American golfers and big hitters at that who over the last few week whos have been in winning opportunities only to lay up their 2nd shots on the par 5 seventy second hole such as Richie Fowler, Marc Leisman and Michael Sim and then fail to find their birdie to take it to a play off.

At least you can be guarnteed Padraic will give it a go. I see he birdie the 1st today to move back into 2nd place but still 3 shots off a Worlds Top 10 player in Furyk .....Cheers
Report BJG March 21, 2010 2:43 PM GMT
Birdied the 1st den play halted :(
Report BJG March 21, 2010 6:35 PM GMT
He has found the reverse gear quickly again :(
Report vinnie_roe March 21, 2010 8:51 PM GMT
Bob torrance has got to get him to switch off over the first 3 rds. I noticed this week he was far too keen when he went to the front, and i don't think he stayed the trip. There was definitely stamina issues agaisnt woods in the bridgestone, and I think we saw evidence of this again. Bob, give him plenty of cover ffs.
Report Dan Chipowski March 21, 2010 9:51 PM GMT
He is still abysmal off the tee. Until he gets his driving in order he won't be winning anytime soon. You can't keep whacking it anywhere off the tee and expecting the short game to pull you out.
Report BJG March 21, 2010 9:52 PM GMT
That tee shot straight into the water earlier was shockin
Report Blessington March 21, 2010 10:29 PM GMT
Flip sake guys 6 of the world top 10 players in the world are playing this week in a field of 156 players and Harrington playing in what he declared was a warm up tournament for him for the Masters in 3 weeks time and finishes in the top 10.......... and your complaining :0
Report Allez March 21, 2010 10:58 PM GMT
Not complaining but to be considered as the world number two or in that kind of regard, then he has to start closing out these kind of tournaments.

It's a sign of how much he's achieved that we consider him to be underachieving at the moment.
Report Blessington March 22, 2010 12:12 AM GMT
ALLEZ....I wouldn't consider him the Worlds No 2. Woods and Mickleson have a good gap over him and the rest of the players imo. But as Woods is the best ever golfer to play the game and Mickleson plays at home every week thats no big deal.

After that Harrington is as good as good as any of them but only that "AS GOOD" I wouldn't say consistency better.

So I just enjoy him for what he does on the day as the American commentator say he's FUN to watch as he's all over the place at times and plays with a big smile as he enjoys it all himself.

I think most of the guys on here would be better adopting the same philosphy.....

Flip sake there's is enough sports every week where the outcomes are boringly predictable.....

You can never say that aboutl Padraic and his golf game thats for sure, and as a Irish ambassor for Irish sport there is no better person. ........Cheers
