Ever since the info on Buick saying he had so many favourites beat up I’ve been watching him at Meydan and again yesterday he was dreadful with about five fancied horses he got beat on every one so why is this jockey still not been given the old ton tac and some up and coming jockey not going to Appleby it’s amazing how he gets away with that kind of record week after week on fancied horses so anyone any thoughts or is he just that bad …
Don’t bet on just favs and I don’t bet on Meydan I’m only saying the stats are there he is forever getting beat on favs he is certainly not a good jockey when it comes to that info that’s al I’m pointing out and when the flat season starts he will be one jockey I would be cautious of putting my money on with that kind of record that is just my point …

Guys why are you assuming I’m laying or betting I don’t touch betting until the flat season and I’m no big hitter but I still think the sport is a little bit dodgy and a bit iffy when you see stats like that with a certain jockey…

that's this forum these days the sports recent champion jockey but you arnt allowed an opinion on how good he is unless your laying his horses, the forum would rather hear about people backing 66,s shots because they hope 1st 5 favs might fall or got out of the stable the wrong side they used to say the same when 100,s of posts criticised Brian Hughes , 3 yrs on its very nearly BRIAN WHO ?

not saying its you but some may have backed a jockey few times and he got beat on shorties ,m if it happens a few times they tend to stick in ones mind and start looking at their rides more closely ,he rides for one of the biggest operations in the game they tend to know what they are doing .often they have a few in a big race and he will sometimes be on the wrong one .

Blacbarn, I only started looking at him when someone put on here that he lost on 11 short price or favs last year i don’t have stats I’m not that worried I don’t bet on him but I just started to look at him on tv in Meydan and it’s bleak reading I’m not stalking him or anything

at what point would he know going 45mph or whatever and concentrating on winning g a race ,perhaps he could have had a stephoscope and thermometer to test the horse in the final couple of furlongs

An unfortunate accident yesterday, which looked worse because of how far in front the horse was for much of the race, giving the impression that the jockey went too quickly....He did go too quickly but it was an accident..
His employer does not employ jockeys that he does not rate...Its a billion pound business he is running.

I took the liberty of pulling up a spreadsheet from 3 years ago. Buick's actual versus expected wins (based on SP) were 0.93 over 1392 rides. Based on that (admittedly flawed) measurement he ranked 16 of the top 100 jockeys for UK rides. One ranking behind Martin Dwyer and one ahead of Daniel Tudhope. Callum Rodriquez was ranked 1. Obviously this is heavily influenced by punter perceptions as much as anything.
Update: he is 0.94 over the past 7 seasons for UK and Ire rides. This improves to 0.98 on favourites.
Don't quote me on this, I rushed it.

The skill of a retained jockey can't just be measured in results on course. Charlie Appleby has to maximise the number of Group races won and he relies on feedback from Buick both at home and on the track to select the right horses for the key races. For me he is right at the top.

He's not the worst around, but the problem is, he's not the best either, and he's riding a lot of the best horses. Too many poor rides for the position he's in.

That is your perception. Only connections know what instructions he had. I would put Murphy top of my list but I doubt if there is more than half a length between the top 20 jockeys when averaged out over 100 rides. They all ride shockers some times.

Now I’m really getting obsessed with following Buick and if I knew how to lay his rides I would but I’m a £1 patent pensioner type of man with the odd £5 win or £10 win if I feel lucky who goes up my local Betfred and would never go online as I couldn’t afford to trust myself with my shrapnel or the wife raggin my ear …
But just looking at the results over the weekend and here’s the but…
Buick 6 rides at Meydan mostly favs all beat then someone said he was in America last night 3 rides 3 favs all beat so whoever told me to lay them I just hope they did because I haven’t a clue so once again I don’t know the guy and to be honest I will still back him when the flat season comes around if I fancy him on a decent horse but I’ve got to admit the owners trainer shareholders must be looking at Buick and asking what the hell is going on!
Only for discussion as I’m bored had ma square sausage and tatie scones so no smart ass remarks if you’ve got a honest opinion hit me back I’m intrested in your feedback…

This Jockey and Trainer has to be the biggest fiddlers on the planet now is nobody in racing still not looking at this set up…
Beaten again on a 1/6
Beaten again on an odds on shot king of conquest but to rub salt in Bin Suroor wins it on a 20/1 shot!!! Come on this incredible that Buick and Appleby are not hauled in front of authorities just look at the amount of times this is happening it’s shocking…

Just looked and he was also on another favourite Emperors Star and he got beat as well…
FFS What is going on with this outfit…
Tell me everyone if no betting is allowed in Dubai how can money and favourites get backed in like that is it from internet betting I presume so as I bet money just in my local Betfred as I wouldn’t trust any of this nonsense with very low prices every week getting beat and I like to give money over the counter to get money back if you win of course but does anyone like the fact if feels like you’ve won and if you bet on the internet you never see of feel the money in your hand…
Anybody else feel the same or is the high street bookies getting phased out?

Dano - The question about feeling the cash is interesting, and there's no real answer to it. If thats where your kicks are, nobody can tell you different. But reading through this for the first time I couldn't resist chipping in on an earlier comment you made. "..I’m a £1 patent pensioner type of man with the odd £5 win or £10 win if I feel lucky.." I really think you be doing that the other way around.

Hayden, I’ve never payed a horse in my 50 years of betting but is it quite a big thing as I’ve often wondered how much would you need to put on a horse to get a decent payout and do people do it regularly laying instead of betting…

Do it Danaho, Sharona, Singingtheblues et al will see you in clover as long as you are backing rather than laying, as Freddie states won ÂŁ3 mil but has lost ÂŁ4 mil.

Rico, Does that mean if you had a £10 spot on that 1/6 to get beat you would’ve got £60 back? But I’m asking seriously as I don’t know but does that mean the 1/6 Buick lost on if you layed it then any horse that won the race no matter which won you still get paid out!
