Plus channon,Quinn.

Racing gods,
How can we get these footy fans to get into racing.

Micheal Owen ,Micheal Owen,Micheal Owen.

Shall we say Andrew balding once played in the Eton wall game.his daughter even was in love island.

El Condor Pasa?

Had Montjeu not got the clear run having looked briefly that he might be caught in a pocket on the rail, and obviously that would have made Montjeu an even unluckier loser!

But whatever, it took an exceptional colt to run him down and there were big gaps to the third and fourth.

Youmzain mentioned earlier by the OP should have been awarded the race through a disqualification of Dylan Thomas under the French rules.
Report sparrow October 5, 2024 9:00 AM BST
Youmzain’s first second-place finish was incredibly controversial at the time.  In 2007, Dylan Thomas beat him by a head, and although Youmzain (a 66-1 shot with British bookmakers that day) had a clean run, Dylan Thomas’ victory was debated for more than half an hour by the stewards because he had impeded other horses. Under French rules, a horse is almost always taken down in such cases.

“They bent the rules,” said Mick Channon, Youmzain’s trainer. “Not that it affected us what Dylan Thomas did, but if you look at French races, Dylan Thomas should have been thrown out. He flattened two or three other horses. I think there were a lot of markers called in that day, let me tell you, but having said that, if we had won, we wouldn’t have had him for another two or three years.”

Agree with Pandora Mtoto beaten by Tony Bin (easily brushed aside previously), was given an awful ride by Michael Roberts. That hurt but not as much as Orfevre, still don't understand how that one got caught late on by a 33/1 shot and then ran into Treve the following year..

Reckon the rest of the field were unlucky in the 1997 Arc for having to meet the great Peintre Celebre   Happy

Report EastLower Gooner October 5, 2024 11:07 AM BST
One of the reasons and possibly the only reason the stewards let Dylan Thomas keep the race was because of what happened earlier in the season when Zambezi Sun won the Grand Prix De Paris and Fallon and Eagle Mountain were left on the floor but connections decided not to pursue further action so the result stood and few of the French jockeys avoided massive bans.

So when the two main culprits from that day (Gillet and Pasquier) got pulled into the Arc inquiry they knew they owed Fallon so made sure no one said anything to take the race away.

Richard Hughes had no chance in the inquiry.

And this was 2007 Richard Hughes so still within the Home Affairs era of BS rides from him so what was one more to an ever growing list.

I seem to recall there was huge irony as earlier in the season Mick Channon was robbed of a 2yo race in France. He'd hardly breathed on an opponent when passing on the way to bolting up by several lengths, only to be chucked out for interference ! When he should have been awarded the race based only same rules, politics stopped it.

For me Pride 2006 needs watching again, her subsequent wins marked her as a special horse  but that Arc run still bothers me, just watched it again on YT,looks wurserer than ever.
El Condor passa ride was not the best imo, liked the sire Kingmambo and had a few shillings on.

If geldings were allowed youmzain might have bagged a treble, something Treve was unlucky not to do, strange ride in last Arc.

From wikipedia.......

"Trained by Patrick Biancone and ridden by Yves St. Martin for prominent owner/breeder Daniel Wildenstein, at age three Sagace won two important races, then the following year scored a two-length victory in France's most prestigious horse race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Sagace came back to win his second Arc in 1985 but following a claim of interference by the handlers of Rainbow Quest, the Hippodrome de Longchamp racing stewards disqualified him to second. Nonetheless, Sagace's performances for 1985 earned him European Co-Champion Older Horse honors".

The one I remember that turned into a helluva thread on here was Ouija Board & Johnny Murtagh.

There were people on that thread with just rage in their eyes.

It was that thread and the Aceform Bago thread because he went all in on him to win.

Thankfully everyone got their money back next time out in the Breeders Cup with one of those no nonsense Fallon ride.

The Japanese would say Orfevre when he looked all over the winner but inexplicably stopped late

and was beaten by Solemia ,piloted by the great Peslier (40/1).

don't know about the unluckiest horse but i know one of the unluckiest punters.

I first went to the arc in 1979 we didnt go racing on the saturday but went to the head stable instead, Freddy said to me looking at a horse this horse will win the arc tomorrow

i bet odds on Troy and guess what won 3 troikas trained by Freddy Cry

i have learned to listen listen since then

Some of you have amazing memories.  Agree about Pride in 2006.. Lemaire not at his best that day..

Reliance II in '65 rates as the unluckiest for me.  Not his fault, and no jockey error, he did nothing wrong and would probably have won any Arc that decade.
