CONDITIONS OF ENTRY As part of the security measures at Chelmsford City Racecourse (CCR), all attendees 18 years and over to the racecourse are required to bring with them photographic ID. This will be conducted by scanning photographic IDs with the following forms of ID accepted; Passport Driver's licence Any government or international issue photo card. This requirement to provide photo ID is to make CCR a safer racecourse and for your protection, so we kindly request your cooperation in this matter. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't like the idea they scan your ID. They could be hacked. Are they the only racecourse that asks for this? Is it done at any other sport?
Neil Graham the failed trainer is now director of racing here, sounds like he will be a failure here.

It's all for our own good...being treated like potential 'terrorists' that is.

I do find it weird GEORGE I must admit. Maybe I have to cross all 59 racecourses off my bucket list. At the moment I have both a driver's licence and a passport but if I live another 10 years I might not have either. And yes I do object on principle as well as practicality.

I am surprised there has been no publicity about this.A friend told me about it a few months ago. He no longer goes. He said on a Saturday night they only want drinkers as there is entertainment afterwards. It has become an Essex night club.
I am going on Thursday evening for the first time as I have received an owners invitation, probably be my last visit.I will show my London Freedom Pass which has my photo but no other details.

it says any government id, salmon, so presumably a bus pass should be ok.
I'd be surprised if they were entitled to create a database of racegoers and would think that they should have to delete the images pretty soon after the meeting, but then again we have an information commissioner who thinks it's fine for people wanting to spend their own money on betting to be subjected to detailed and intrusive financial checks.

Surely it's only a matter of time Tom Kerr does a well thought out and insightful piece in the Racing Post highlighting this as "intrusive and Draconian".
And Michael Dugher (known to his friends as Phil MySlots) at the Betting & Gaming Council will surely be outraged.
Or maybe - neither of them will make any comment whatsoever.

Another annoying habit that has crept in at most racecourses is having your bag searched before admittance especially at sparsely attended mid week fixtures where you are not going to get trouble. I was at Fontwell last Tuesday week and as I had no bag to search the security guard asked me had I anything in my pockets. I said, yes, my pockets are full and walked on. He did nothing. I am not letting any person search my pockets.

They claim that they are checking ID's for reasons of security. This is total hogwash.
So a terrorist turns up, shows his driving licence, and can go in. Some old geezer who doesn't
drive or carry photo ID around with him will be refused admission and not refunded.
It will be interesting to see their reply to my e-mail.

At Ascot the bag searchers order you to lift up your arms to be scanned by a metal detector. Which is a right pain when you carry things like house keys or small change in your pockets. You get the impression they'd never met anyone carrying coins before.

I think the local police should object to their licenses, if there is such a high risk of disorder in comparison to other leisure events.

Just 1,288 paying public turned up for this meeting last year so it won't be difficult to deal with any trouble, if any, you'd think.
Easy to ask that many to produce I.D without too much delay or too much annoyance.
well done to the marketing team though. the description of the evening sounds fun unless you're there to watch some decent racing.

It's like getting into Fort Knox with scowling nightclub bouncers ready to greet you at the entrance. I used my Freedom Pass when I went recently as I'm not showing them anything else to copy. I don't have any trust whatsoever in the security of their data handling arrangements.

I have encountered that before at a couple of venues, though never a racecourse. AIUI the justification for taking the copy is if trouble kicks off, they just need to match the CCTV pictures to the provided ID and hand the list over to the plod.

I wonder if they really ask for ID or whether they just stick it in their Ts and Cs to deter trouble makers and give grounds to refuse entry. Logically I don't see how this could be workable in practise.
Anyone attending tonight might care to comment?

I rang the course earlier today saying I was on my way to the course but I didn't have any photo i.d. I just had a debit card and cash on me so should I not bother turning up? I do that sort of thing sometimes,to amuse me more than anything else.
So,the lady was a bit jittery and spoke very quickly but she said, no problem whatsoever. It's a random check anyway so you most likely won't be asked at all but f you were, a debit card will be fine and they may take a photo of you so nothing to worry about in the greater scheme of things.
That's that sorted then.

Racecourses struggling to get customers through the turnstiles and many having financial struggles and they bring this idea in, lol. Honestly, you couldn`t make this rubbish up. Will lose at least half their regulars.
I seen a programme other night stating that cash and even bank cards will be a thing of the past very very soon. When you open a bank account, the bank takes a photo of your face and adds it to their data base. When you buy something, your face is scanned at the check out and the system automatically takes payment direct from your bank account. Big Brother looks tame compared to these future ideas.
